Title: Iyer's Tech Talk - Battery comparison - Haiyin/Turnigy 2200
Post by: K K Iyer on October 28, 2014, 01:28:19 AM
Hi,
Had received a Haiyin 3s 2200 lipo from Vishal Rao of Kinetic Hobbies a few months ago.
Decided to compare with a Turnigy 3s 2200.
Haiyin a few mm larger, and a few gms heavier (194g vs 172g)

Test equipment:
DT 700 motor, EMP 11x5.5 prop, Red Brick 25A Esc, HK-010 Power Analyser.

Load was selected on the basis of 5-6 C drain, which would give 7-8 minutes while consuming 65-70% or around 1400mah.
Caution: I suspect the results would be significantly different under higher load conditions. will try that shortly

Test done in 7 consecutive 1 minute bursts at full throttle, with a few seconds in between for noting down readings.
Initial voltage: Haiyin 4.18, 4.18, 4.18. Turnigy 4.17, 4.20, 4.19
Closing voltage: Haiyin 3.77, 3.77, 3.77. Turnigy 3.75, 3.77, 3.77
Consumption: Haiyin 1400mah, Turnigy 1300 mah

Attaching data and graphs in Excel. Hope Excel attachment acceptable.
Oops. Doesn't accept.
Alternative?

Emailed to myself, took a pic, and attached. Hope it is readable.
Must be a better way :headscratch:

Sir,
next time try select the area that you want, copy(ctrl +c )  and past it to paint and save as jpg
Simple as  a b c

and thanks for the detailed review, expecting more in feature.

Sorry Iyer sir. Not readable. Looking forward to the reports! May be if you can email me the report, I can make a high-res snapshot of it and mail back to you.

Good effort Iyer sir  :hatsoff:  I guess you need to load the batteries more (may be 10-15C) for conclusive results.

Yes, charging the batteries for testing with 12x6 instead of 11x5.5

CAUTION: 5% estimated error in observing/recording. For example, starting voltage under load for Haiyin recorded as 12.5. Should have been 12.0. (12.5 was the resting voltage). If you multiply the recorded volts and amps, comparison with recorded watts shows data error size.

So, what can you conclude from this? We need a detailed answer - more grist for the mill ;)

Some additional data:
Haiyin 3s 2200 about 3 months old, Turnigy 3s about 6 months old.
Both rated 20-30C.
About 10 cycles on test bench and about 10 flying, on each.
Both stored at 3.82-3.85 when not in use initially (till last month)
Never run to below 11.1 resting voltage.

There is some scope for variation due to time intervals perhaps not being exactly 1 minute, rest period of a few seconds between each minute run not being equal, possible error in noting down etc. Will capture on video the next time to retain proof of data. Should have monitored rpm too.

All ifs and buts apart, the test suffices for my hobby needs. Basically i needed thrust and duration data, especially at the discharge rates i typically use. Say 10-20 amps on 3s 2200s, as all my models are below 1 kg weight. (Except the Tiger Moth, but that is on a 4s)

Earlier post was on around 10 amp draw. Now here are my readings on around 20 amp draw, for what they are worth.

Conclusions though, like beauty, lie in the eye of the beholder!

So turnigy being 3 moths older than the haiyin performs better in most cases. Cost wise which is the more economical option and which is the best bang for the buck iyer sir?

Ah, so conclusions do lie in the eye of the beholder!
Curious how you came to your above quoted conclusion. From the 5C load data or the 10C load data?

Also, only did a thrust/duration comparison.
Value for money and longevity not yet tested.

In case you are looking at the thrust gms/watt or thrust gms/amp, please take into consideration that where the voltage is lower, so is the RPM. In static thrust tests, the prop efficiency is typically higher at lower RPM.

What we are looking for is which battery can give higher thrust for the same duration (tested), or same thrust for longer duration (not tested), while consuming the same mah.
