Title: LIPO battery help
Post by: Raspbarry on April 17, 2023, 04:16:30 PM
Hello guys

I am new to this forum. I have logged in, because I have a doubt.
I am making a drone, but found out that batteries were too expensive. The cheap 2200mah lipos barely give 5-8 minutes of flying time, so I decided to build my own battery pack using three 3.7v 10000mah lipo batteries in series. My question is, will my drone run on these batteries? I am using standard A2212 1800kv bldc motors (the golden coloured motors) paired with simonk esc's.
Here is the exact link to the batteries : https://quartzcomponents.com/products/3-7v-10000mah-li-po-rechargeable-battery?_pos=2&_sid=7e838f489&_ss=r
By the way, they are 1260110 model lipo battery.
Please answer my question, so that I may not cook my batteries.
Thank you

The LiPO battery specification has 3 specification required for RC flight in addition to it's weight.

1. Battery voltage (or no of battery in series 1s, 2s or 3s). 3.7-4.2 volt/cell.
2. Battery storage Capacity in mAH or AH.
3. Discharge Capacity (C Capacity).
______________1C means, 10000mAH or 10AH battery can give 10A Discharge current max.
______________2C means, 10000mAH or 10AH battery can give 20A Discharge current max.
______________25C means 800mAH or 0.8AH battery can give 20A Discharge current max. (0.8 x 25 = >20)

you can safely use load current as 60% of the battery maximum capacity.

Now, in your specified battery specification, the C capacity is not specified. So this battery can be used for battery bank or any other application that need 0.1-0.25 C.
But if you connect to an RC Plane or drone, it's higher internal resistance can droop it's terminal voltage as low as 2V to 1.6 volt, and can ruin the battery pack.

So check the C capacity for any flight model.

For model aeroplane, more elaborate details calculation is here. (http://www.rcindia.org/electric-power/iyer's-tech-talk-how-much-power/)

kalyanprodhan,

Thank you for your information. I found it helpful.
I was browsing around, and found a site that sells the similar model(1260110) battery, with all the specs-
alibaba.com/product-detail/lipo-battery-1260110-3-7v-portable_1600344713508.html
So, the c rating should be 1-2 c, which means the battery should be able to discharge at a rate of 10-20 amps.
So, please check this and tell me if it is suitable for my drone.
Also, shouldn't connecting the batteries in series increase their c rating?

Thank you

Just imagine if my batteries worked! three of these 10000mah batteries just cost 1500 rupees. A normal drone battery of even half the capacity of my battery(5000-5200 mah) costs above 6000 rupees in robu! My batteries would be twice as more lasting and cost about a fourth of the other battery!

Look, your motor 2212, 1800kv can draw 12A Max, provided by matching prop, and 4 motor can take max 48 amps. (neglecting efficiency of ESC & current of controller, & other equipments (FPV tx etc.)). So, even your 10AH battery should give at least 5C capacity, so that it can give 50A Safely. But it did not.
Hardly it may be 0.5C.

Otherwise, other hobbiest would not purchase costly battery...

I see.

However, the motors took about 6 amps of power at 30-35% throttle. So, at full throttle, they should take about 18 amps, according to my measurement with a multimeter.
But, as you said, my battery will not be able to discharge so much. The BMS of the battery terminates the connection just as 6 amps of power is drawn, whereas it should really cut the connection if current more than 20 amps is consumed. I think the BMS is not really suited for this lipo, but that is a manufacturing error...
I would not recommend buying from this site, as the battery could not provide sufficient power according to datasheet. They offer return before three days, but shipping itself takes that time. So by the time it reaches you, you cannot return the product anymore. But the battery itself is nice, with good voltage
What a shame! It would have been nice to get 10ah drone batteries for about  :Rs: 1500inr.
Anyways, Thank you for your time, kalyanprodhan  :hatsoff: . I will buy a set of decent set of drone batteries. Any suggestions about where to get them for a low price?

I finally bought a proper drone lipo!
Its a bonka 4.2AH 3s lipo battery
But it brings its own set of doubts
Any idea at what amperage should I charge this lipo? I am using an Imax B6 charger
https://robocraze.com/products/bonka-4200mah-35c-3s1p-11-1v-lipo-battery
It says that we can charge it at a rate of 1-3 c which means 4.2-12.6 a.
But I'm still not convinced that this lipo can handle that type of charge.
Please help me!
