If you are charging using NO more than close to 5A (a bit less would be preferred), then the simplest option is to find a laptop power supply.  Should be able to find one from older laptops.

Remember that if you charge any 3s lipo upto 2500mAH at 1C (probably the most common case), you will use only 2.5A.

So, Anwar, how about a poll to find out the type of batteries guys are using? Could be divided into just a few categories to simplify things.

The problem is that people use a variety of batteries.  Also, many people now charge 2x3s (or 2x2s) batteries simultaneously, which also affects charger selection.

I think the most common case is that of a 5A 50W charger.  And those are very very affordable too these days.

In any case, what are your suggestions for poll categories/options ?

Why make one when you can get a ready made one with a 5A rating for around Rs.850.

Exactly my point! Not many users of high power chargers and they would know of the pitfalls, in any case. For the rest a 50W charger + 5A supply is all they would need.

The idea was to quantify what you and I feel, instinctively.

why go in for 12V, 5A, when you can use the laptop power supply you have. Laptop power supply will give you a higher wattage which your charger can use quite efficiently.

IF YOU HAD TO USE A 12V WITH 5A POWER SUPPLY THEN YOU SHOULD HAVE PURCHASED A TURNIGY ACCUCEL6 OR A TURNIGY ECO50...

This is what i think... Go ahead and use your Laptop Power Supply...

Guys i connected the charger to a battery eleminator with rating 12v 5A. the charger powered up but showed ""input vol err"" then i connected it to a 12v 3~4A battery. then there was no problem.. does this means 5A is too much for the charger??

If you have some knowledge of electronics then i think the SMPS Power supply is very cheap option. It has a wattage of 350 onwards. If you need any help regarding the smps power supply i can help.

RC India - Flying and racing with open minds !

Basically, what you need is something like this :

http://cgi.ebay.in/CONTINUOUS-5-POWER-SUPPLY-ANY-CHARGER-/110309117971?cmd=ViewItem&pt=LH_DefaultDomain_203&hash=item19aeef9013#ht_2003wt_907

BTW, the PC SMPS is a great alternative, and the price should be around Rs.500 (if my memory serves right).

Please read the above link which I posted earlier.

Actually I wanted to post the link to this particular post, instead of posting the entire post again but I have no idea about how to do that. Head Scratching

Anwar Sahib some pointers would help me. Smiley

[ADMIN EDIT] I posted the link.  To post a link to a particular earlier post, just right click on the "heading" of that particular post, and choose "Copy link" or "copy link address", and paste it wherever you want it to be.

Only if you need the extra power. A laptop supply is a  more compact and neater solution for, like we said, most of us.
