Hi,
I think a high wing electric planes/glider  with brushless motor and a lipo battery is a good option for a beginner.About your question in the performance of electic and engines i'll leave it for the experts to answer.

Electrics are cheap/good/easy for beginners. But as the size of the planes increases then electric becomes an expensive option, especially the batteries.

In electric you prepare before hand(charge batteries etc), goto the field and fly, come back clean.
In nitro, you prepare stuff in the filed, refuel tune and fly and after that the plane will be a mess, you need to clean them.

Electrics are punchy. there will be immediate response. Nitros have a very little delay in them.

In electrics you finish a flight, come down and need to charge, which will take 1 hour. In nitros you can wait for few mins for the engine to cool, refuel and then start flying again almost the whole day.
