Hi Guys,

It really rejuvenating to come across this forum. It brings me closer to a long dream come true to build and fly my plane

Been on the forum reading post but really need good pointers for my first build
Budget: don't ask as i don't have one will have to create and wait as i go

was on a site saw a beautiful F18 Foam plan design plan and then came across this site  n went crazy to build it  but some how m back to scenes

I have made a mental plan and hence I need your help hence this post :

Here is the plan Pls start helping with the first

First :
As there are many experienced foam builders please suggest a start / easy build (i understand no build is easy)
even the name of the plane will do ill try to find the plan but if you can share it would be gr8
Pls reply on first step.

Second:
If i am able to get the build together ill create a budget (save) for motor, servo, prop etc that should not be a problem

Third:
If first two steps are completed will again put out a post for second hand Transmitter / Receiver (TX/RX) FM 6ch
i guess receiver ill get new
Logic FM will be cheaper then Ghz one.
As i am new to building i don't mind a low cost second hand working condition
as most are experienced here some will want to upgrade and sell of the old Transmitter
4 ch should be ok for first build but i feel 6ch is best for now and some to come if i proceed to more builds
if i can budget for a new ill try that too..

In short Beg borrow buy Grin >Cheesy

Forth and Fifth Depends:
ill try a simulator or crash and burn

Looking forward for valuable tips from all

Regards

Malcolm

Retreat, Hell!

Hey Malcolm, welcome to the forum!

I'll jump to the 3rd point first. 2.4G radios are much cheaper these days. Here are some links:

http://thehobbyshop.in/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=2&zenid=7ddd1feed98469cb8619daf2b3eb907d
http://rchobbyaddict.com/product_info.php?products_id=142&osCsid=37d6137bfbd86158ec8649609d966df7

Try searching here (and on other sites) for beginner foamies, you'll be able to decide for yourself which one is the best.

Do try a good simulator first, you'll realize which planforms are good for beginners and how to handle them.

Good Luck! Smiley

scratch builder and DIYer

Hey Melcom,

congrtz for stepping into this wonderful hobby, you gonna love this for sure:)

if you don't have any previous experience with RC airplanes and are a beginner, then i would suggest you should try your hands on some high wing trainer airplane.......they fly slow, are docile and really forgeving....

To begin with, you can serach for plans of Piper Cub J3, Blue Baby, Cessna 182,Cessna 185, Super Cub etc. over the net.......RCgroups.com is a good place to start;)

Practice, and only Practice will make you perfect

i would go with tomhe plans for the starters quite an easy build and fun fly,

this one is easy

Hey Guys,

First a big Thanks for all your reply's

swizera : Like your suggestion but i am a bit confused with the RX shown it looks so small. The RX i have seen so far on net look too bulky though have not seen  Rx in hand but say like the following

http://rchobbyaddict.com/product_info.php?products_id=142&osCsid=37d6137bfbd86158ec8649609d966df7  that is suggested will it be bulky an will it effect the aerodynamic of the plane

SunLikeStar: blue bird does sound good but the plans do sound a bit complicated to follow will have to look out some more plans and videos as the cut out was in A4 or so format not sire if cut out will come good

will have o study both before getting in but think will try both

rcpilotacro:: I did download a plan similar to the one suggested but for a Mig 29 but was  let down,  I took a down sized print on A4 and made a card board cut out just to try first before thinking of scaled model but after getting the cut outs with great pains the cockpit part did not align on the body groves (holes) as it was supposed to  so not sure where the problem was but m skeptical for that particular design.

do have a better plan for a even better proper model it looks  simple but needs some sanding work but should be easy for experienced foam worker if you like i can share

Bilaal: As stated early blue bird is of some interest need to do research but will look into other planes suggested before in put my hand on one.  m interested with Su31 suggested by switzera may be the first plane i intend to make but need to understand the risk to my RX it is out in open and no protection and aerodynamics factor as asked above.

Swapnil: thanks for the links i did like the HK-T6Av2 for its cost factor but is it a reliable one ?
Reasoning for my choice for FM one was
First : I expect second/used TX would be cheap
Second: what i understand FM TX are not fussy with the type of RX they usually mate with the are compatible with one or two other make which is not true for Ghz they needs the same Company RX
which is very big down side in case of damage. with FM TX you can match to some cheaper RX. Please correct me if i am wrong.
If i stick to this hobby to long surely ill need a upgrade soon for a 9 ch, would like to try out other thing with free channels
6ch well is the basic minimum suggested by most but don't wan to invest more as upgrade will be round the conner

Once again i am grateful to all your support and valuable suggestions

do keep helping this baby to walk before he flies

Firstly, the reliability factor depends totally on how you use it as a beginner. Noobie mistakes include skipping the manual in excitement, not knowing basic electronics, not reading enough about all the components of the power setup etc...

I've used HK stuff and guess the HK-T6Av2 should be good enough for a beginner. If you want to be carefree, you should really consider  investing in the Turnigy 9x. It will suffice all your near-future needs.

FM is dinosaur dude! And, good quality, properly used 2.4G receivers can live for ages. They are smaller, lighter and have much shorter (hassle free) antennae. And damage is rarely an issue as they have to be used with foam packing.

Jets (i.e delta planforms) are difficult to control and are generally not recommended to beginners. Try them in a simulator and you'll see why.

Go with something simple (high winger with dihedral). There are loads of home-built beginner planes here that flew successfully. Do go through their build threads.

Good Luck! Smiley

No malcolm , the Rx as shown in the pics are not at all Heavy . and will not affect the Aerodynamic of the plane.

Just See the first pic of the tx and rx. Compare the Rx size with the Tx, and you will get the idea of the small Rx size.

Learning to Fly

Malcom, I suggest you do not attempt SU31 as the first build.

Since you are starting on this hobby, my suggestion is as follows -

Build a 3 channel, high winger pusher with EPP if can get a hold of the material
Keep the weight low
Keep the fuse length almost equal to wingspan with the distance between CG and tail being as long as possible

Most importantly, get a guide to help you.

Hi Pankaj,

Thanks for your input well have not yet started the build
was studying electronics and trying to understand as i have ample free time for now

Can you suggest a plain for start so i can study how to build

Hey Swapnil Thanks again or your input on TX Think will take your advise
once i have cash for the same If you say HK is relabel ill take you for your work as i am sure you are experience and know what you are talking

will respect both your advice and look for a high wing simple plane though i thought the Su31 was simple just cut and glue http://rc.tomhe.net/su-31

Malcolm, please note that I have no experience with an HK radio (I have a Futaba, a Sanwa and an E-sky).
When I say it is reliable, I mean lots of beginners find it good.

Please make sure that you 'read and understand' every word in the radio's manual. I screwed my first radio by using dry cells instead of rechargeable Ni-MH cells. I wish I hadn't read the manual in a hurry. But you know, it was just beginner's excitement!

...was studying electronics and trying to understand as i have ample free time for now...

That's the way to go mate! Some people just purchase all the stuff and post silly questions here!

I can send you detailed tutorials and e-books about rc electronics and model aerodynamics if you want! Just say the word.

Pankaj suggested you not to go for the su-31 because it is difficult to fly even though it looks easy to build. It is really agile due to its big control surfaces.

Get your hands on a simulator and try the different planes there. You'll realize why the good-looking ones are difficult to fly! (Download a RealFlight demo or fms)

Hi Swapnil,

I dont mind reading material would be grateful if you can share
malcolm2979@gmail.com
as m jobless now can catch up with reading, n my love for planes
hopefully once i have understood what it takes to make a rc to fly
ill start construction now is a good time to study

one thing that confuses me is foam plains like su31 dot have that curve "D" type which generate the actual lift in plains
then how does it fly with flat wings.

Thanks for your constant support.

Newton's law mate! The motor generates enough power to propel the plane in any direction you wish! Power systems now are much lighter and efficient. You can fly a flat sheet of coro if you give it enough power!

Malcolm, go through the 'Beginners guide' and 'Aerodynamics' sections of the below website. There's some good detailed info there.
