Title: Ft flyer crashed Need help!!!
Post by: manishpndn333 on May 22, 2014, 11:45:41 PM
Hi,
I am new to Rc field and I have started on with the Ft Flyer
I have never built airplanes before this and even never tried to fly one of them
So this is first Build and flight
I built my Ft flyer 3 days ago and went it to give a test flight
I was so eager that i dint fix the battery properly and it was lottering around but i ignored it ....So it unfortunately crashed(airplane was not in the Air for even 1 sec)
what I think happened is that during flight the battery came ahead and is became too nose heavy and crash landed on its nose
What my questions are that....Is the dihedral enough?
I have attached pictures of some parts that are of the wing and had minor cracks during crash i reinforced them with Tape....
plz give me suggestions on flying Rc planes and does using tape on wing affect the flying characteristics?
Is it underpowered?
motor used...

battery...

prop is a 8*6 one
Plz go through the pics and point me out out my mistakes
I am making my landing gear now so that i will not need to do a hand launch
I am very dissapointed that this crashed even before flying :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

I dont know if its only me or in the picture i see that the prop is on backwards?
Moreover use a prop saver so you dont break props that often and also i think the FT flyer from FliteTest had more dihedral in my opinion.

First, make sure all the parts (battery, ESC, Rx, etc) on the model are secured properly with glue or tape. Letting them move around in flight will shift the CG and that's not really good.

@manishpndn333: There are numerous things that you need to check always before testing your model. Your built is nice and clean {:)}.
Just make sure that every dimension is according to the plan or not. Next, be sure about the dihedral. Give some time for doing it properly.
Make an estimate of the AUW of your model and then see whether electronics you've chosen is fine or not. Make changes if needed.
And then comes final assembly, here, motor should be clamped on motor mount very properly. Motor mount should be properly placed using some adhesive.. The thrust of your motor should be in right direction. Then comes placing the battery. For this check where your CG lies. Then place your battery and adjust it accordingly to the point where you get  it completely balanced. Fasten your battery using velcro strap or normal tape very properly. It should not move at all.
Most important if you are new to flying first try learning some flying on a simulator and then test your model. Otherwise it would always result in a crash. If you are planning to put a landing gear be sure whether you've got the appropriate flying skills for it or not.

Hi,
Here are the pics after the repairing is done
the parts which were broken a bit were repaired with tape and hot glue
and the whole nose was made again here are the pics of the repaired and ready model
Thank you for your precious replies...
from the pics if you find something wrong then please point out my mistake....
What I am concerned about is the dihedral..... is it fine?
Ive secured the battery with tight rubber bands motor is rotating in anticlockwise direction and the CG is just fine (it is a bit nose heavy ...very little)
what all things should i take into consideration?
And please someone verify whether dihedral is right..??

Ideally you need a bit more dihedral. This is because this plane does not have ailerons and depends only on the rudder to turn it. On such planes, you usually need a decent amount of dihedral so that the plane levels out quick enough, otherwise, if you start turning in one direction and then want to turn the other way, the plane will take a while to level out, after which you will be able to turn the other way.
However, CG is more important. Very slightly nose heavy is fine. It should never be tail heavy. Try it once more, you will only figure out whether the dihedral is right or not when you fly it. MAKE SURE that all components are fixed properly, the control surfaces move in the correct direction and do not have much flutter and that the vertical stabilizer is perpendicular to the wing and the horizontal stabilizer is parallel to it.
No need for landing gear as of now. Get someone else to launch the model and if possible, get a third person to click a video. A video will be very useful for us to understand what went wrong with your plane in case something does go wrong.
Crashes are fairly common in this hobby and you should not get disheartened by them. Don't let your spirit die.
Try again and write back.
Best of Luck.

Will the landing gear cause some problem in my flight?
Because I have added one already  :headscratch:

Hi,
According to your suggestions I flew it This time my plane went into air (it was very hard to control it though)
It flew for a minute or so and Then a strong breeze blew and my wing (left side) literally got folded and my plane crashed....
:banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:
The foam was already very 'bendy' and it was not that Rigid...
The foam i used- Biofoam 3mm
But I am happy that atleast it flew  ;D unlike the first time
This was a bad crash so my airframe is non repairable now
I am planning to build a nice "Easy" trainer :headscratch:
I am confused which one to choose
After searching a bit in the forums I found two names repeating
Avispad and blu baby
Which one should i build ?
Which material(foam) should I use and also some other suggestions ?
I want clear cut plans and tiled (as The FT Flter) if possible
Thanks.

Many people on this forum have made an avispad, and you will get ample amount of help while building that. However, it will need a motor more powerful than your FT Flyer. Avispad is made using Coroplast which is readily available everywhere in India. (All you need to do is find a shop that prints Sign Boards, they always have Coro).

The Blu Baby is also a good trainer, provided you can find proper foam. Biofoam is usually pretty weak, whereas foamboard is very heavy. The Blu Baby should be easier to fly than the Avispad, however, you will grow out of it pretty fast.

The Avispad is also pretty aerobatic and can be used to learn basic aerobatic maneuvers as well.

If you have a person who knows how to fly who can teach you, then go for the Avispad. If you plan to learn yourself, then go for the Blu Baby (As it is much slower and easier to fly).

Sure I am ready to go with blu baby
I am a self learner  ;D
Any idea of the plans?
And suggestions

And any tutorial/build Pics will help a lot
Motor used-1500kv
ESC-30A
Battery-1300 mah 30c
Will this be enough to fly a blu baby smooth enough?

@ Anjan babu Thnanks,
And cheers
Good luck  ;)
Is my power setup ok?
And do share the pics  ;D

How can you ask if your power set up is ok with an incomplete motor specification?

Sir, he posted the link to the motor in a previous post. The motor should be fine for the 33" and the 42" version of the Blu Baby.

No Problem  :)
Sir i have attached the tiled plan
I was actually confused which is the exact plan  :headscratch:
Following this plan I would not need to take any measurements right?
I am a complete noob in this hobby
With this tiled plan i just have to stick them together and trace and cut them out,Isn't it?(just like the FT flyer)

My humble suggestion:

1. Make another FT Flyer. Follow the instructions precisely. See the video 10 times. Ensure you understand every small, innocuous seeming detail

2. Get the plans printed on a single large sheet from a commercial print shop

3. TAKE ASSISTANCE!! Do not immediately fly it on your own. Get an experienced flier to help you with the maiden and the trims, and the first few flights

You will be successful this way, and enter happily into the wonderful world of aeromodelling which will enrichen your life.

I stay in Kandivali (W). So its not that far from Dadar. There is a small field in Kandivali (E) Thankur village where we can fly your models.

You can get in touch with me on my cell. have pmd you the same.
