Title: How to Control aircraft without ailerons
Post by: dileepbalan on September 17, 2010, 09:05:15 AM
Dear Experts,

how to control/fly the 3CH aircraft(Throttle+Rudder+Elevator). I tried  in simulator to keep the aircraft parallel to ground using rudder. I feel it responds slowly to rudder to make it horizontal to ground. But, with ailerons, I can control well (and I rarely used rudder, sometimes not used at all)

I dont have the real experience, still practicing with simulator  :giggle:

Lets share your experience to control the aircraft without ailerons. Do you feel difficulty to control without ailerons?

Regards,
Dileep

Same as this ;) http://www.rcindia.org/electric-planes/easy-star-maiden-crash-destruction/msg31290/#msg31290

The idea is that such rudder only planes need to have some significant amount of self stabilization, which is why you see the rudder+elevator setup pretty much exclusively on high-wingers or gliders with really long wing spans.

Thanks Anwar bhai for getting me out big confusion. I too feel that ailerons is really needed than the rudder for beginers, and I could able to land safely many times.

I was reading the Guppy thread suggested by RC, that model is 3CH, such kind of self stabilized models could be easily controlled without ailerons, right? (but, in one of the page, they mentioned wing construction with ailerons also)

simple thing ! one of UAV i fly does not have ailerons ! but you know one thing its wing span is 3 meter and length 2 meter
and friend the thing is the width of rudder is no more than 1" and length no more than 7" ,but still in manual mode
it flies so nicely i can assure ,it flies more stable and steady than aileroned planes!
all this due to only one thing" poly-dihedral "

I second that, with a poly-dihedral plane you can turn pretty well with just the glider ! How well you ask? i fly my plane some 500m from the sea coast under high winds with just the rudder. If you are good at it you can actually go inverted without the ailerons!

I thought the whole point is that the PLANE has to be good at it, and not YOU :headscratch:

If you are piloting 4Ch plane, do you really use rudder? Or rudder + aileron give better control? What’s your experience?

While learning in simulator, I haven't tried rudder at all. I could able to control aircraft without rudder! At what circumstance rudder is really required?

I meant if your good at flying it is not that difficult to do a inverted pass without ailerons  and of course the fly should be good at doing inverted !  ;D

When flying with a 4ch i dont use the rudder too much but if its a plane which has been made to work better with rudder i.e with the poly-dihedral then rudder works just fine. But without any kind of poly-dihedral, dihedral for some reason quick control with just the rudder is not that easy . Probably someone with more experience can explain better.

When flying in heavy cross winds (be it takeoff, level or landing) you will find the use of rudder. Most of the time, I do not use it except for performing certain manoeuvres. Its always a good practice to fly with rudder. But then good practices are always ignored..;-)

i think most of the guys in this forum know this "roll makes plane to yaw!and yawing makes plane to roll" its a basics of flight!
and use of both control surfaces while banking or turning makes a perfect turn without sideslip and stress on aircraft!

Its always good to practice on the sim using both rudder and ailerons to turn.

That is one of the advantages of starting with helis. You always tend to turn with a bit of rudder even when you step DOWN (:giggle:) to airplanes later on ;)
