Title: How to mount SkySurfer wings?
Post by: chindichor on May 18, 2014, 02:01:16 PM
I bought Sky Surfer V3. I do not want to glue the wings. I want to keep it such a way that I can dismantle the wings when needed. Can someone suggest me how do you do that. Specifically:

1. Do I even need to reinforce it with glue/velcro/rubber band, apart from the fact that the wing goes through the fuselage, and the two parts of the wings are joined together with CF rod?
2. If I do need to use something like velcro or rubber band. Where does the velcro or rubber band go?

Thanks,
Chindichor

I flew mine by just snapping the wings in place and reinforcing with the CF rod, you could just put some FibreGlass tape over the joint of wing and fuselage, or maybe use a velcro in between the two wings

Thanks, ajn. I guess I would go with velcro.

Just in case anyone else is wondering how to place velcro, here are some images to help you (source: http://forum.flitetest.com/showthread.php?3518-How-to-hold-bixler-sky-surfer-wings-together (http://forum.flitetest.com/showthread.php?3518-How-to-hold-bixler-sky-surfer-wings-together) )

One more tip! Check all your servos properly before you fly it, one of my aileron servos had failed even before the maiden :banghead:, luckily I noticed it on ground itself.

Great! I also used velcro on my skysurfer wings... I also added 2 pairs of neo dymium magnets in between the two wings...

Neodymium magnets? Can you elaborate on that.

Neo dymium magnets are tiny magnets that cling to each other easily and form a strong bond. You can get it on stationary shops, electronic shops, projects/model making shops. Otherwise order it online.

Sorry I guess I wasn't clear about my query before, I meant to ask how did you use the magnets to reinforce the wing section? Also pics would be really helpful.
Thanks,
Arjun

And I'm sorry too for misinterpretating ;D ;D
I guess you can put the magnet on the wing near the joint i.e. that part that stays inside and the second one somewhere inside the wing mount area.

Hi

You can do it in between the two wings so that they stick to each other. If you notice both the wings fit with each other exactly ... Create a small hole (based on the size of the magnet) on one of the wings and stick a magnet. At the complementary point on the second wing, create another hole for sticking the magnet. The magnets can be stuck using epoxy and holes can be made using soldering iron.

This should look very similar to the how the cockpit and the fuselage connect to each other.

Dont have pics handy but will post in a couple of days if you have any doubts.

Regards
Komal

@fool, I do not man. I do not have a weighing machine. The only payload I have is Turnigy S3P1 2200 mAh battery. If I remember correctly, it weighs 150 grams. So, all up weight = SkySurfer's weight + 150 grams

The standard weight is supposed to be 715 grams... I weghd mine some 15 mins ago after adding weight for cg correction... it has shot up to 893 grams.. I am not flying it till I am confident of this.. someone please help me

I guess you should check your weighing machine. Weight does not depend on CG. CG only matters for balance while your plane is up in the air. Unless you are adding / removing stuffs to / from your SkySurfer, the weight shall not change.

Plus, all you putting in is a battery and a 10 grams or so worth receiver. I guess you should be good to go unless you are mounting stuffs like camera, GPS, or the likes.

But hey, I am just a n00b. I haven't even taken off my first flight yet. So, I cannot say how sound my advice is.

Oh, I did not read your post correctly.

I am not sure if you should add weight for CG correction. I guess you can move battery to do that. Are you unable to achieve correct CG just by moving battery location in the fuselage?

Well.... elementary my dear Watson..... if the CG is not achieved by shifting the battery... use lead weights.  You may use steel ball bearings too...... The bottom line is that the CG must be in correct location when you go for flying.

Further the seller or the manufacturer does not recommend any fancy type of wing fitment like the one shown here.  Simply go my the manual sypplied with the model and do what is told.  The model will fly better and last longer.  Using velcro etc only spoils the aerofoil and disturbs the airflow please does not give a good fitment of the wing.

Shobhit sir, RC Bazaar's SkySurfer comes with no manual. I have been reading stuffs over the internet. But I agree with you.
