Learning to Fly

Well, last saturday was pure bliss. I had been scratch building (my own design) a pusher trainer to learn flying. Over the past few I had been testing the bird but somehow could not fly decently. I was taking off, but was turning without gaining height, so it was coming down. In all I made about 7-8 attempts, but even with all the crashing, the model has held on with some repairs.

This was till saturday, when a helpful flyer (Divay Puri) decided to be my mentor and trim the bird. He also managed to maiden the bird, before handling the controls back to me. The 3-4 mins that the bird was in the air, was pure bliss....

The bird has a wingspan of 40", length around 31" chord of 7.1" weighs all up about 550gm. The main fuse has a frame of 1" laminated biofoam with 2mm carbon rods. The wings and tail fins are 5mm biofoam

Well this pic was taken after the 5th attempt when I had to repair the wings as it had ripped from the screw holes.

Thanks Divay for making my day.

regards
Pankaj

Learning to Fly

Earlier, the tail was being designed like this, but was changed after the build when I realized that the 1" x 1" join was not providing enough rigidity to the tail section and that the tail was flexing. After which I made the tail section with a 6mm hollow carbon tube and stuck the tail fins there.

The battery is long enough for 3S1P 1600mAh, but I tested with a 1000mAh pack. The power is provided by a Towerpro combo from Hobbycity http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=4853

The chamber below holds the AR6200 twin receiver and the ESC. The battery goes is in the nose

Anwar, I did not have a linkage connector, so I have created a Z in the middle to allow for any small correction in the pushrod length.

Thanks for the clarification.  Usually "V" bends are made for that purpose, and "Z" bends are for the ends to be locked into servo or control horns.

Learning to Fly

OK, some update on this build.

I have been flying this bird for sometime now. Flies nice and slow, in fact so slow that one can take a nap while the bird is in the sky. Decided to time the flight time. I am using a 3S1P 1000mAH battery. It gave me a good 15mins flying time with little bit of throttle management. The other thing was that I was practically flying with about 25-30% of throttle most of the time.

Learning to Fly

Final update..... retiring this bird.
Reason? I was on settling things up for Sunday flying and slipped. Landed heavily on this one and the wing of the cub. The fuse broke in this and the wing in the cub....
Well back to the drawing board.....
