Title: Is it easy to buy inert gases in Bangalore?
Post by: protanak on October 31, 2016, 06:35:41 PM
Hello forum,

I have finally found some time in life to work on something I enjoy.

Is it easy to get inert gases like Helium or Nitrogen in Bangalore in small quantities?

I feel a little uneasy about it since there is very little information about how to plumb a gas cylinder (all that jargon: regulator, pipes, what not).

Thanks

I think you might get it easily. Only the cost will be too much as you will have to pay a deposit for the gas cylinder + the cost of the gas as well. But if you want helium in very small quantities then ask a local balloon vender they will supply it

And I'm curious to know why you need these gases?

I think you are talking about Helium coz Nitrogen is not Inert, it's nonreactive.
All balloon gas cylinder has Hellium find one gas balloon seller and manage to fill it inside a cylinder and you are done.
It;s not hard to find Nitrogen either coz it is used in cooking.
Don't say that you are going to use Helium for making funny voice.

Helium is to levitate the ship I'm working on.

You're right, Nitrogen isn't actually inert.

Nitrogen is used in cooking? seriously? I have never heard of this :)

I am vary of balloon sellers because I have heard that they use only 80% Helium and balloons don't last high very long.

Haha I didn't even know about funny voice with Helium. I wonder how that works. I will certainly try it once I get a cylinder :P

I am basically worried if there is any kind of regulation around buying and keeping inert or non-reactive gas cylinders.

I work from home and maybe out in the yard. I don't want anyone reporting me. :)

So you are making an airship(BLIMP) you can use the helium available in balloon shops. There are plenty balloon shops in Bangalore itself. I wanted to make a airship before. But the cost of the resources to build one and the price of helium made me drop this idea. I'm very interested to know about your progress!

Thanks Mohammed! However I am really concerned about the purity. I've heard bad things about balloons from local shops (that they fall off quickly).

Do balloon shop folks have the piping, regulator and flowmeter and stuff?

And how expensive was the Helium when you checked? I am expecting it to be around 15k at most.

Well the float time depends on alot of factors like temperature, pressure and the material in which the gas is stored( latex balloons bleed air faster compared to Foil balloons) they treat the balloon with a solution called hi float which retains the air in the balloon for much longer. Pure helium is hard to find and maybe be really expensive.     Yes the balloon suppliers have the regulator n all. I think ballonistics has it. Check their site

If you are making an airship or blimps
Then Helium will work which is available with balloon sellers
Coz u need slight weight
All movments can be controlled by electronics

Helium Baloons do not last long because, Helium being the second smallest element after Hydrogen escapes from the baloon even through the smallest of the smallest holes, due to this property Helium is also used for leak testing. The Airship should be as airtight as possible. You can try getting Helium from welding gas suppliers.
