Q1) Was your transmitter powered on when you were doing these test? Q2) Is your receiver bound with the transmitter? Q3) Is your receiver getting power and is functioning correctly? You could connect an ESC to the receiver and see if the motor spins. Make sure no propeller are on the motor.
