Title: Making my First SPAD Plane - Step by step
Post by: sriharishine on January 30, 2010, 10:29:28 AM
Hi to all RC Geeks,

I am a very beginner, I am starting my First SPAD Plane.

I have collected many Plans for making a SPAD plane, Now I want to choose the material that I am going to use to make my SPAD plane.

I have heard the following
1. BioFoam - What is this? Normally in which shop this will be available.
2. Depron - What is this? Cons and pros of this material?
3. Balsa wood
4. Carbon sheets

Please suggest me to choose a material and where to buy it in chennai?

I have tiled sheets of plan for making a Blu Bee of 42 ", Hope I am going to follow.

If anyone there to suggest me to choose a model/plan for a start up plane...

Regards
Srihari

There are detailed threads already on most of these (except may be carbon sheets, which are not commonly used for this purpose).

Please search the forum first (the "Search" option is in the main menu on top; http://www.rcindia.org/search ), just put in key words like "depron biofoam" and "biofoam chennai".   You should also consider the other commonly used material for making SPADs, that is "coro".  Again, search this forum, and read the existing material.  You will learn so much more than the responses you get on this thread.  Take your time and read up, it will certainly help you in the long term. I would urge you NOT to take shortcuts on this.

Also read the beginner threads in the gems list at : http://www.rcindia.org/rc-india-forum/the-rc-india-gems/ .

The choice of material comes down to the plan you are building. Some plans are designed for foam (depron/biofoam), while others are for balsa alone, and yet others are for coro with some wood inside (like balsa or other types of wood). Searching for the name of the plan you have chosen on Google should tell you what people usually use to build it.

I will leave it to others about the choice of starter plans to build. But you should realize that there are already thread answering the exact same question, like this one :

I do not see any need to close the thread (in fact we never close/lock threads, except for classifieds where the sale is over).  If this is in response to my suggestion that you use the "Search" option, that was general advice to everyone who is starting in this hobby and seeking help from the forum members.  People will think that the same topic has been discussed multiple times before, so why bother answering, and the beginner will get the feeling that folks are high-headed and unhelpful, while it is not the case :)

Plus there is the obvious benefit of taking in all the great information from the existing threads.

Everyone loves to see new planes being built (regardless of spad/kit/scratch/ARF and even RTF), so please continue posting as you progress with the build, and ask questions as you proceed.

If you have read enough of this forum (or from other sources), you should have realized by now that beginners need a "high-wing" plane (and electric ones are the way to go). The lighter you build the plane, the better your chances of success.

I guess this is a model for 3d flying(quite advanced mode) meant to be primarily made of foam  :headscratch: dont know how it will fare in coro.......

Srihari - If you note from our previous discussions, this is not a high-wing plane.  Unless you have "mastered" flying on a sim, you will really struggle with this one.

I hope you have seen threads like this : http://www.rcindia.org/self-designed-diy-and-college-projects/my-first-scratch-bild-plane-(-good-for-begginers)/

Thanks martian, I am dropping that plan as you said.

Anwar,
I have checked this thread before and then only I planned to use the coro, but as martian said this plan is not suitable with coro. So I am just going to follow as RC (as he did in the above thread.)

I will design its complete structure as drawing and will post here to confirm and start building up it..

Great Thanks to RCIndia for such a good support...

Great ! :)

BTW, there is nothing wrong with experimentation on different materials. Just be prepared to fail, and move on quickly to something else. Most people say that the feeling is most wonderful, even if it fails !

If you want it to fly well the first time around, then doing some home work and following the lead of others is certainly the way to go ;)

You can visit this website http://www.spadtothebone.com/. It contains a number of models ranging from basic trainers to intermediate and advanced builds which can be done from coroplast and other commonly available materials.

One of the easiest models to make is the SPAD Debonair. It's a high wing plane and as a first timer, I made all the basic structure in 6 hrs flat. Too bad I did not finish the build and went on to make the SPA3D and now the SPAD Extra.
Most of the models on spadtothebone are for glow engines.
Hope we have another spadder with us soon.
Doc
