Title: MY SKY SURFER CRASHED
Post by: maveric on September 24, 2013, 12:01:09 PM
I BOUGHT A SKY SURFER FROM R/C BAAZAR, BUT IT DOES NOT FLY AT ALL IT JUST NOSE DIVES LIKE A STONE...I HAVE MOVED THE BATTERY TO THE REAREST OF POSTIONS BUT STILL CG is not proper as the aircaft droops over the nose, please suggest how I can make it  alittle tail hevery so that it maitians some aerodynamics. (I must mention that I have put a hard tape in the nose and fuslage).

What battery are you using? The Skysurfer usually balances out with a 3S 2.2Ah without any issues.

Try adding some ballast weight at the furtherest point towards the tail end.

plz try to get help from local flyer. There are so many things those can go wrong on first flight. You should join local club.

@ Maveric.
this is very rare, that skysurfer is nose heavy. mine also balance with 2.2 3s lipo. that means by putting a lot of nose weight.
try to balance the plane at 60mm from leading edge.
see if there are some washers or dead weight at nose. usually other similar pusher planes have dead nose weight, like Bixler or axn. Remove those if they exits in your plane.
if still its nose heavy take some rs 5 coins. stick them together. and put at tail boom.

post some pics of your plane.

if the CG was at the recommended location prior to the launch, then the problem is not the CG it is the thrust line and power, since you don't want to read, search, and find out, let me take that pain for you and point out a few threads/posts for you

first one (if you have time and care to read, read this entire thread),

..
13. If launching SkySurfer or a easy star kinda aeroplane, DO NOT make the mistake of chucking with full power, she will surely pitch down viciously and you give excessive correction, pitch up and crash. THE KEY is open power only so much that she is tending to slightly sliding out of your hand. chuck it from a higher to lower ground if possible and available, if not it is fine. During Chuck ensure wings are level and chuck it like a javelin. after chuck slowly open power and climb away GENTLY.

Second One

Build is easy, points to bear in mind are:-....

(e) CG is perfect at 60 MM, RX at CG, 3S 1300 mah up front in the front compartment, no nose/tail weight needed

Lastly, if thou haveth time, care go through this thread ?

The hobby is expensive enough already :giggle:
You can rather use automotive wheel balancing weights, they come with a glue coated surface.

Don't worry, spare parts are available in the same RCBazaar......

http://www.rcindia.org/electric-planes/sky-surfer-from-rc-bazaar-build-and-fly-log/msg98379/#msg98379

see my basic aerodynamics thread, conventional thrust drag line is a nose up couple, ( http://www.rcindia.org/rc-general-topics/basic-aerodynamics-for-rc-flying/msg58078/#msg58078 ) whereas Sky Surfer/easy star/easy star II/ Shikra like aeroplane which has high mounted engine has a reversed thrust drag couple, i.e on opening power they will go nose down, at take off this couple could be more than what elevator can handle owing to low forward speed, at launch , therefore power should be just enough for launch and slowly open power, if you launch with full power she might slam the ground.

Frankly Gusty Saheb, on reading through, it seems to be newbie blues. Young maveric, enlist the help of an experienced pilot, and let us know the result (Note: An actually experienced Pilot, not just someone who claims to be one :D)

hey this reminds me of my maiden easy star flight - same behaviour as you have mentioned. Turns out, I had the elevator reversed

Nose dive is common in sky surfer
1. Low throttle, it should be 70 %
2. Throw against the wind, very sensitive
3. Run for about 10 m and then throw
4. There is definately power issue, motor or prop is wrong or battery is not sufficient

I tried to fly with 2s, it will not take off at all

2. Throw against the wind, very sensitive

...into the wind, please

PS
check, recheck before your advice, atleast i do that ;D

ha ha,

Against the wind has another meaning ... lets recheck

may be i am wrong ! following point is worth considering.

for example
"i deposit money against an account", therefore against could be construed differently, therefore in aviation, we use into and away from wind, so that the meaning is covered unambiguously

you can as well say it as along the wind and against the wind....

Same thing happen with me  (recently) ... I was very confused... After 4 or 5 nose dives I realized that there was no wind blowing in my ground so had to chuck it a bit harder(parallel to the ground) ... Took about 10 meters of 70 percent throttle to gain altitude..

I had same issues with my Sky Surfer. Thanks to VC & Sundaram ji, I found out the problems. Firstly check your props. The sharp edge should not be facing the front of the plane. And secondly, as others said, dont launch at full throttle. I now hand launch it 50-60% throttle giving it a hard throw at an angle of 20-30 degrees. Flies beautifully. Coincidentally, I use the same setup as shown in the "Build Video (Courtesy Naren - Rc Modelling and Flying India)". You can find it in the Sky Surfer V2 product page at rcbazaar.
