Doc. Basu ( Avijit Basu )  inspired us to  build a Plane from Kit  the good old way and since we had the Sharma Models Kit in stock with some advice from Vivek Sharma as well and under  the able guidance of Doc  we completed the KAISER build and test flew it yesterday afternoon despite strong winds .

ALL I CAN SAY IS SHE IS A BEAUTY , GRACEFUL IN ALL FLIGHT PHASES TAKE OFF , LANDING , AND FLIGHT .

SPECN :

WING SPAN : 52 "
LENGTH  : 33 "
MOTOR : HYPERION 3008 MOTOR ( EQ TO RCFORALL 2814/1250 KV )
ESC : RCFORALL 40 AMPS
PROP : RCFORALL 10 X 5 SPORT
BATTERY : 11.1V  2200 MAH TILL 3300 MAH ( 3 BATTERIES OF DIFFERENT CAPACITIES USED IN TEST FLIGHT )
SERVOS : E : STANDARD : 3003 , R : STANDARD 3003 , AILERON : RCFORALL 9 GMS SERVO.
COVERING : COVERRITE TEXTILE .

The  plane is docile and truly a beginners delight in  our case as an aileron trainer for Saravanan our staff .

All she needed was around 6 ft to get air borne and went into a gradual steady  climb like any plane would ( a pleasant and different sight from the near verticals we are used to seeing now a days   Wink Smiley)

It flew two circuits very easily on invert in very high winds . The winds were severe to the extent where even an Easy Star was unstable .
But the Kaiser handled it beautifully.

Hats of this Kit build it really proved that a Balsa build is a great option given the time  Bow Salute Grin

It was build that was satisfying after a long time .

Thanks DOC  for the guidance and the help .
Thanks Vivek for a Great Plane I loved it.

Mr Sai,

i got one couple of months ago and built it, with sharma diesel , i agree on the pleasure of building and flying is ultimate, my kit though was coarsely cut, lot of sanding filing, painstaking build. Discussed with Vivek, He  says, he is going to laser cut it in the near future, came with a life size blue print, like good old days , nostalgic aeromodelling style. all you wannabes must get one and build it, it is very cheap and tests your patience for sure

 I agree Yes I forgot to add that the good old blue print and the ammonia smell  that used to hang around at the time of the blue print ( hope I am right on the ammonia bit ) nostalgic for sure.
The last time we did the Kit build was 5-6 years back when Venkat built a Great Plane PT 60 under the able guidance of Mr Kamalakaran. Bow

it was great fun building the model with Saravanan and the rest of Sai's team.
Two points i would like to emphasize.
1. as the title of the topic states.
The kaiser is a high wing trainer. After discussing the matter with mr. Vivek sharma, we decided to build it as a low winger. since it is a tail dragger, there was no issue with the main undercarriage which was in front of the wings.
2. the kit is not designed to have ailerons. Again with Mr. Vivek's input, we built it with strip ailerons about one inch wide. I feel that it is important for people who are beginning to build from kits to build ailerons into the wings even if the original plans don't call for them. This is because there may ( in fact there is a very high chance) be minor inaccuracies and assymetry in the wings.
The aileron trims will help compensate for that.

Gross inaccuracies will call for a rebuild.
Anyway that is my opinion.

I still have one Kaiser, borrowed (but never returned)  from Sharma Ji of Sharma models, about 7 years back with their disel engine (btw that was with ailerons). My first engined aero-model.

Before flying this, I practiced on sim for some 1-2 hours and took this baby to field  Giggle....

It was so stable and humble in its flight that someone like me, having zero experince of real flying and 2 hours of visrtual flying were able to took it off and landed safely without any supervision ( >Cheesy >Cheesy ..beleive me there more than 70 odd student of my university were standing there and cheering up as spectators (for them I was a seasoned aeromodelar  Giggle Giggle).

After 2 successful landings everybody congratulated me and I accepted all with proud, everybody had questions -- how? where ? what?.......I answered all of them with my limited wisdom about flying.  I was flying for the first time was not known to anyone standing there Giggle Giggle .

All credit goes to Kaiser, Sharma Ji and his very reliable disel engine. Thats my KAISER STORY  Thumbs Up

But not for first time modellers.
I learnt aeromodeling in NCC at school and at Jawahar Bal Bhavan, trivandrum
We started with chuck gliders. then can a skybee C/L. next was a Peace Maker with built up wings and profile fuselage.
I never got to build a tow line glider or a free flight bird. they require accurate construction and perfect trimming.
Then came a Gret Guns C/L with a box fuse and built up wings.
after that i got back to areomodelling after 25 years, when I walked into India Hobby centre at Russel St. and bought my son and myself a Skybee kit and a 3.5 cc Aurora diesel.
The senior flyers at Kolkata were pretty keen on teaching my son- then 9 years old to fly C/L.
In fact when i first moved to chennai- and was flying C/L at sholavaram, Mr. Nausher Irani an expert modeller from before i was born was driving home and stopped by  for a sortie on a skybee after maybe 25 years.
We used to build it as a group and learnt more from others mistake as well as over own.
The other day someone was remarking about buying an apple box glider kit as his first model- that is hardly the way to start.
If one is keen on learning to build from kits, there are a lot of old timers ready to help- Unfortunately they don't log onto the forum.
There is a group of older timers  at chennai in their early 60s who fly mainly kit and stratch built models.
the scene must be the same in other places as well.
One thing for ARFs is that your heart does not break with the model after a crash. Well not as much as when a kit/ scratch built model goes down.
So get to be a average flyer before flying kit built models.
Aeromodelling is more than just flying a model on sundays.

It would be nice if Vivek started producing these KAISERS as LOW WING AILERON versions... I wouldn'd mind one..... would be nice as electric flyer in the car boot for smaller fields.
Just noticed it 52" wingspan is not really a car boot small park flyer... no so its no good for small parks...

Sai, please can you post some images and details of a slightly more powerful electric motor that you can supply(that can take it up vertical) and weight of the model all up with 3 cell 2200mah batteries... (I have a few packs of those for my Park Zone T28 (in my profile image..stays in car for quick sortie after work) Its nice to have the power under the hood so you know you can get out of tricky situations...

Shuold be very easy to modify. The cut out for the low winger can be marked on the fuselage sides, so the. Builder can decide what he wants to build. The ailerons are 2 strips. Of balsa

Very nicely built..
The servo-wires could have been concealed within wings to add stars to its beauty and provide hindrance free wing. But i am sure that there was no provision for it, since it was not meant for ailerons..

Well spotted. Again very easy to correct before covering the wing. Remmember the plan did not call for servos and the plane was hurriedly fi nished to get it ready for sunday flying by a technician who is used. To. Buildng spads and foamies.

Sai, please can you post some images and details of a slightly more powerful electric motor that you can supply(that can take it up vertical) and weight of the model all up with 3 cell 2200mah batteries... (I have a few packs of those for my Park Zone T28 (in my profile image..stays in car for quick sortie after work) Its nice to have the power under the hood so you know you can get out of tricky situations...

I have a  3536 motor that would fit the bill and run well on a 2.2A battery but I doubt if this plane will ever go vertical with any set up as she is just not built for that  and it would be  horrible to see her do that even if she does.
She is all about the grace and nostalgia of flight Deepak , when you see her fly is when you will realize what I mean. In short she is old world charm  not to be hurried like the present day planes  Wink Grin , I realized this after I got to know the story behind the Sharma Kaiser from Col Nair  Hats Off the good old man from Jabalpur who actually was involved in the development of kaiser with earlier Sharma Generation I presume saw it at my office and  took  a 3536 ( 2814)  set up for his 3-4 decade old kasier to convert her to electric. He  has sent me some Benbuckle plans ( http://www.benbucklevintage.com/ )  and wants me to build and electrify them will get down to it with Doc Basu's guidance some time  . Kaiser is from that era  so I would never like to see  her go vertical . Bow

BTW I use Oratex ( textile covering ) so this baby  is good and solid  as well as give her  an old world look .
In fact my technician banged the wing on a landing  and we flew it for two weekends before realizing that the section along the leading edge had cracked two weeks back and the kaiser kept on flying and would have continued to do so with a broken wing .

I am under the impression Sharma Model is now Laser cutting all their kits!!

Your kit must be laser cut Sanj...does it all slot in place or did you have to do a lot of fiddling, sanding and filing like Gusty had to do?
