Title: Tethered Balloon FPV
Post by: ashwinsurej on September 13, 2019, 03:33:28 PM
dear members, i am looking to live stream video feed from a hydrogen balloon in air about 200-300 mts from ground level. i want this feed to be streamed wirelessly onto a computer with an existing wlan without internet. firstly is this possible..? if yes can you please help as to where i should be looking. google tells me fpv setups may be the answer..since balloon is not going to support much weight, max weight including power for the setup on balloon cannot exceed 500/750 gms... any help i will be greatfull

Hi, I am not at all an expert in fpv .
As nobody has answered, i will share my thoughts. An fpv camera, a video transmitter and a lipo battery on the balloon.
A video reciever on ground connected to the computer.
You better start a new topic to get more attention. Good luck, and always willing to help, Hari.

Some FPV Camera or since this is not for FPV flying and latency is not an issue you may even use a good action camera.

And some video transmitter like this https://www.banggood.in/Eachine-TX805-5_8G-40CH-25200600800mW-FPV-Transmitter-TX-LED-Display-Support-OSDPitmodeSmart-Audio-p-1333984.html?rmmds=search&ID=512671&cur_warehouse=CN
The camera output is connected to the video transmitter.

FPV antenna like this https://www.banggood.in/Realacc-Triple-Feed-Patch-1-5_8GHz-9_4dBi-Directional-Circular-Polarized-FPV-Pagoda-Antenna-p-1195261.html?rmmds=search&ID=224&cur_warehouse=CN
Patch antenna may be good choice as signal direction is always same.

Some battery to power the VTX and camera.

At ground, a video receiver like this https://www.banggood.in/Eachine-ROTG01-UVC-OTG-5_8G-150CH-Full-Channel-FPV-Receiver-For-Android-Mobile-Phone-Smartphone-p-1147692.html?rmmds=myorder&ID=224&cur_warehouse=CN which should be connected to your computer.

Again another FPV antenna preferably a patch style on the receiver too.

If there are no obstacles in the way 300m should not be an issue on 5.8Ghz band.

Since the balloon is tethered I think you could instead use a direct connection like a cable from the camera to the computer. These days alot of FPV systems are becoming light weight ! Also you could use a li ion battery pack for the onboard power as it will be light weigh. Coming to the balloon are you using the standard latex balloon or mylar based balloon?
Also hydrogen I'm not sure is safe option. Go with helium as handling would be much safer but down side is helium is expensive!
I've read that to carry 1g of weight 1 liter of helium is needed !

300 m of cable might add weight and expenses , 5.8Ghz is best option , considering the lightness of the Eachine setups as posted .

Also since its a balloon, you would need some means to control the camera directions , a gimbal with remote controls . Else you would be at the mercy of the winds. And the balloon would rotate and the camera would point any where .

Buy an Eachine AIO camera 25mw(tx04) which would weigh 3gm approx. As someone pointed out tethering will add more weight than going wireless.
You can have a small lipo battery depending on your weight constraints. If you can allocate 50g then you can use 18650 batteries as they pack better densities and suitable for low power requirement.
You can buy FPV OTG receiver which can used to view video on android mobile or windows PC.

How many hours or days do u want to hold your balloon in air?
