Title: Totally new need real guidance.
Post by: avinas155 on March 22, 2011, 01:04:57 PM
Dear all,
I am avinazsh, i ve completed my automobile engineering recently and working at chennai currently. i am really interested in RC cars n planes. I just went through the topic here in the forum but i find it quite difficult to understand as i dont have a clear basic about the field. can people help me out in learning about RC cars and planes, also tel me the components name that i require, their make, models no and where i can get them along with the price(preferably the cheap ones as i'm just starting for the first time), that i really need to build a RC car r plane which ever is easy to start with for a beginner. and finally how to go about setting things up to make it function properly.

also i need information about the competitions as i would lyk to take part in it but hope that might take time so as to learn things first.

Welcome to RC community.

Being a new entrant in RC hobby, I want share my experience (no advice here).

First of all research a lot, read this forum, and some others, even if you do not understand any thing don't worry, you will after some time. Being a technical person it will not be difficult for you.

Meet other RCer in you area, see them how they are working. They will be more than happy to help you.Believe me I have not meet a single Rcer who is not willing to help.

Before buying any thing make sure that you are not paying through your nose, be sure about pricing and stuff you are buying, so your research and reading will be helping you here.

All the Best and Happy RCing

Edit: I think same suggestions are posted by Augustinev, he is seasoned RCer (I am coming to know), He has just posted while I was writing this. ;)

I do not want to sound like "ganging up" on you, but you have to make some decisions, and take one step at a time.  For example, cars or planes as the first one ?

Now, let us say you picked planes. Then you can see the list of things needed in this thread :

http://www.rcindia.org/rc-general-topics/re-glow-vs-electric/

And that thread is part of the Gems list, which has a lot of useful stuff... and I agree it is a lot of reading, but just go with the beginner ones.

http://www.rcindia.org/rc-india-forum/the-rc-india-gems/

In short, people would be hesitant to type in everything that has already been said multiple times before, you would do the same thing a few weeks later :)  Just use "Search" and read a lot, the more you read, the MORE YOU SAVE MONEY !

Pardon me, but it should not be about "being easy".  It should be about what YOU think you will enjoy better or what you have passion towards, and what/if your circumstances permit (such as access to or identifying a flying field).

where i could get the foam mateial, servos, motor, and the carbon rod if i am not wrong which is actually a link from the servo to the flaps, propeller n so on.?

Hate doing this to you, but please search and read on for another 30 more minutes... you WILL get answers to all your questions.

Most importantly, you would have learnt a LONG lasting skill/lesson about being self reliant on seeking such information in the future

There are two schools of thought here.

1. Go with a good radio, which will last you long.

2. buy a budget radio right now and buy good radio down the line.

I have gone with option one, In my opinion I have saved, what I might have spent on a budget radio.

My heart and mind goes for 2.4Ghz FHSS tech. and this tech is here to stay. This means that it's more likely to get cloned receivers for them in future. (My favorite place for Radio gyan is "http://www.rcmodelreviews.com/spreadspectrum01.shtml"). And you will be needing receivers to go in different planes. Presently only two companies are using this tech.

I have gone for a import route, but that time price of radios available with Local hobby shops were 2 times at which I have bought.

Scene is different now some LHS in India are offering Radios at very attractive prices. So inspite of importing radio you can buy from them. Please go through some recent posts and you will know who all are these LHSs.

Your budget for Radio should around 10K for a 6 channel radio which will be going to last you for Long time.

i'd like to to give some suggestions.  :)

1]  first of all i guess u should start of with  beginner planes like[ axn floater , easy star ,]  there is a hot topic on axn floater on electric plane section and dont hurry with scratch building.

2] after buying a radio buy flight simulator and practice until u become good at it because crashing your plane on a simulator wont cost u a penny and there many planes in a simulator to try ur hands on .[i bought my sim from a local Lhs  here in bangalore.]

happy rc ing
  yashb ;D

how about stimulator with tx? how much would that cost me.?

I think you can buy a simulator software with required cable to contact your radio with your computer, in the same price.

I bought one from a LHS in Bangalore and I am quite happy with that.

I am seeing some post today on this Fora, Radio and Sim will be going to cost you well below 10k.

I took survey through the forum and found these parts were really necessary to build up a plane. i also browsed the hobbyking site and have selected various parts that might be required. just guide me in taking a look at the parts model i have chosen and suggest what all parts if i put together would make my machine fly.?

To start with since people tell me not to start from scratch i found the kit for my plane(everything from the hobbyking site)
1)J3 Blue airplane model kit
2)Servo
        HXT900 9g or HK15178 analog 10g.
3)Motor
        Towerpro brushless outrunner 2410-09 13A/104W
                                 or
        Turnigy C1818 micro brushless outrunner 3500kv (9g).
(*also suggest me a propellor for the motor)
4)ESC
Turnigy Ae-20A brshless or H-king 20A fixed brushless speed controller.
5)Battery
        Turnigy 1300mAh 2S 20C lipo
                         or
        Zippy flight max 1000mAh 2S1P 20C
6)Battery Charge
        Hobbyking simplex 1~4S liPo / liFe 12, 100~240v charger.
7)Tx/Rx
        Turnigy 9X 9ch transmitter w / module & 8 ch receiver(mode 2)(V2 firmware)
                                                    or
Hobbyking 2.4Ghz 6ch tx & rx V2 (model) (throttle on right)

help in suggesting the better one of this for the plane and also other parts that are required to complete my plane(i.e. push rods, wires, connectors etc.)

My suggestion, better to go for a better esc (30-40A), better Motor in the range 200W, and 3S initially. As you wont need to upgrade your stuff later.
My friend had this rtf from hobbycity(the green one) and just a most of the body was destroyed. Before you maiden that have a carbon fiber spar to the fuse and then fly.

Please meet flyiers before you buy. I feel you are plunging into this too fast. I dont mean to discourage you but the truth is RC items are expenssive. Please meet people personally , watch them fly, fiddle with their electronics and planes. I did this to foamy and learnt quite a lot. I have learnt a lot from Abi, Vikas, Foamy and others.

Avinash - I typed in "rc field in chennai" into the Search box on the top right, and clicked the "search" button :

http://www.rcindia.org/search2?search=rc+field+in+chennai

The first result gives you where people are flying, INCLUDING MAPS !

Kindly use the search functionality, as it saves you time and not feel bad about asking questions :)

Nothing to be "sorry" about.  Just that it feels strange that you have the power / information on your fingertips but you are not using it :)
