Title: What is the best way to get into RC in India, on a budget ?
Post by: anwar on March 18, 2009, 05:57:29 PM
This discussion should help guide all newcomers on how to get started in RC on a (low) budget, using resources available in India.

We are not only looking for general comments or direction, but also specific pointers.  For example, along with saying start with a simulator, post some links to simulators available in Indian stores

If the discussion grows big, we will summarize the important points in this main thread.

Two main tips....

1) Start with a sim

2) Visit the closest  RC field and communicate with the experienced folks.

So, if it were you, how would you get started in RC on a budget in the present day and age of available resources in India ?

Hi All,

Anwar thanks a lot for bringing up this topic  {:)}

As a seller focused on budget products for  beginners to RC I have found many beginners make decisions purely based on the eye appeal of planes and land up with the wrong planes ( it just happened today morning as well).
They assume that flying is the easier part , they see a couple of Videos on youtube and assume they could do it .
One of the important factor that beginners need to always remember is dont go by the looks of a plane when you start of.
I have found many a beginners pass by a very good plane like the GWS slow stick only because it does not look very good , the stick appearance is not very appealing in looks but I can tell you from 1st hand experience this plane is capable of surviving a direct hit  in case of a nose first crash. The other major advantage of planes like this and the MOSS  recently launched by us is they are very easy on the pocket and hence great value for money.

I have come across beginners buying EDF Jets like the MIRAGE 2000 , P51 Mustangs etc .

Another common error scratch build beginners I have seen commit is to making plane like the Profile EDGE , the YAK, NASTY  as their 1st builds just because they appeal to the eye and are easy to make , they pass up planes like the Blue Baby which again is a great scratch built beginners plane again on looks alone.http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=681556&page=8

Beginner have to bear in mind that even the most experienced Pilot in any airforce around the world or for that matter the most experienced RC pilot started with a not so good looking HIGHWING trainer.

SO LOOK FOR A PLANE WITH A GOOD DIHYDRAL WHICH IS A GOOD FLOATER AND GLIDER .

I AM ASSUMING HERE THAT WHEN WE SAY BUDGET WE CANNOT CONSIDER GLOWS AS THE MINIMUM SET UP IN THAT CASE WOULD BE NOTHING SHORT OF RS 18,000 TO 20,000 +. HENCE ELECTRICS ARE THE ONLY POSSIBLITY FROM A BUDGET POINT OF VIEW.

We have a FMS simulator Box  in stock for beginners at our e bay store which is reasonably priced:

Dear Anwar and Sai,
One can go into RC very cheap too. Get a 4-channel Radio approx(Rs.4000)
Get some Coroplast and a plan for a thermal soaring glider(Rs 200 to Rs 300)
get 2 servos Rs 650*2 = Rs 1300

total 5500 5600 is enough

What about your views.

Post by: rcforall on March 25, 2009, 06:27:11 PM
Ashok ,
I agree with you .That is precisely the case with Mr MOSS the Glider  being offered by us.

http://cgi.ebay.in/RCFORALL-MR-MOSS-GLIDER-BRUSHLESS-BEGINNERS-RTF_W0QQitemZ150331948788QQihZ005QQcategoryZ2563QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp1742.m153.l1262

This Glider is close to unbreakable because :
1) The Fuse is a Slow Stick Fiberglass fuse
2) The Motor does not have a shaft that will bend
3) The prop is mounted with Prop saver
4) the wings and tail are CORO.

This comes with a full set up of servos , brushless motor , esc , LIPO battery , LIPO charger , turborix 6 channel radio  with receiver .

The crash resistance of this is phenomenol.

The design is proven as it is a scaled down version of the IIT sp4mm3r 2009 winning Glider Mr Moss which used to do hard spot landings.

Sorry to bump in guys:

I have a point to make. The first thing is It would cost Rs 22500/- for someone to begin with a RC beginner model in a nitro set up.The set up is as follows:

Futaba 6EXAP 1 Unit
.46 Trainer ARF
.46 JBA F Engine
Glow Booster With Charger
Manual Fuel Pump and all other stuff required to go on air.

If a new comer buys this. The only thing that he requires to do to move on other planes is to buy the model. He can install the engine, servos and receivers back into the other plane.also being a 6 channel radio it can last for a long time even if the pilot moves on jets.(Practically 6 channel is the max channle we use).So glow too is a good value. Now with the advent of pushers we can move into a jet with basically the same set up used in a trainer

Ganesh ,
You are right  Minimum for a Glow Set up is around Rs 20 - 25,000.

While for a Electric set up like a branded product like GWS Slow Stick the Budget would be around Rs 9-10,000

Self made Kits Like Mr MOSS would be around Rc 6500 to 7000 ( max ).

A great Beginners plane like the Multiplx Easy CUB would be around Rs 12,000/-.

also being a 6 channel radio it can last for a long time even if the pilot moves on jets.(Practically 6 channel is the max channle we use)

6 channel will last a really long time for airplanes.  But if you plan on getting into helis also, get a 7 channel, as a CCPM nitro heli with a governor to control the engine rpm will require 7 channels.

Those should really last you a life time !

Post by: Mpowershopping on March 30, 2009, 02:45:08 PM
Well a 7 channel is the best if we include heli into the mix but the cost just goes up a notch. Also one thing i need to stress is though a electric setups are indeed quite good,i personally stick to the nitro one's cas i need to hear the roar of an engine. It is my personal choice and i have nothing against electrics. Also another point i wanna make is the with futaba we can be rest assured of the quality(in terms of life and acceptance).I myself had a problem while we where marketting a lower cost brand as ppl in India seem to dislike quality products without brand names. So this makes the cost go up further.

Yes, that is "comfort in numbers".  It seems to be the main reason why Futaba, JR and Spektrum continue to be the top brands, even though many others are equally good and cost less.

Definitely Electric Power is the best because all you need to refuel your plane is electricity to charge the flight battery. It is the least expensive. Also Li-Po batteries and brushless motors made low flight times and low performance a thing of past. Now electric power systems are available which can not only equal but also outperform Glow powered models.Glow fuel is available to fyers living in cities only. Also methenol is a controlled substance and it is against the law to pocess in any quantity without a special permit. Even keeping stock of petrol at home is against the law. I strongly believe that future belong to Electric power.

Hi,

I am really new to RC... and wen i say new i mean not even ABC... I was just going through the net looking for info on remote controlled planes. And i was pleasently surprised to chance upon this site.

As far as i have understood, is a simulator all i need to start? and if i do get this simulator, i can download the software from the links posted by Mr. Sai and really get started? Please correct me if i am wrong. Could you also guide me to wat to expect with the simulator?

Thanks
Sajna

Welcome to the forum Sajna  :)

Yes, the simulator is the very first step that one should take when they are venturing into RC.

Depending on your budget, you can make two choices here.

1) Get a sim use only transmitter.
Pros:  Least *initial* investment
Cons:  You may outgrow it pretty soon, and you will have to get a real radio later anyways.

OR

2) Get a radio that can work for the sim and for actually flying RC aircraft.
Pros:  Long term, safe investment.
Cons: A bigger upfront investment.

My all means, I would pick [2], unless I am one a really low budget.  Forget it, I would do [2] even if I am on a budget, since I have to spend that later anyways.

Here is a discussion of Simulators from our sister site for RC in Qatar :  http://rcqatar.com/simulators/flying-simulator-(training)/

Another great option is to get a beginner plane/heli that comes with a sim.  Our 1K sweepstakes (http://www.rcindia.org/free-donations-and-sweepstakes/the-rc-india-1k-sweepstakes/) is such a deal  ;D

thanks a lot for the info anwar.. wen u mean option [2], will it be enough to get the FMS tht rcforall has put up on ebay and download the software for tht? will i be able to use the same on a real (i mean hobby) plane?

Please bear with me if my Qs are really basic....  :)

Hi Sajna ,
I think what Anwar means is go in for a regular Radio with a SIM input jack and use a cable like this to connect it to the  sim on your computer :
http://cgi.ebay.in/FMS-CABLE-FOR-FP_W0QQitemZ110368731893QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_203?hash=item110368731893&_trksid=p4634.c0.m14.l1262

FMS in my opinion is good value for money as  any sim prepares you for the real thing to at best around 70 - 80 % but the real thing is always different from the sim what ever you do , hence FMS in my opinion is good enough.

You can start with  a Model like Mr MOSS or Slow stick which  are difficult to break on a crash of course the choise depends on the budget.

You will find rajsigma ( Rajesh ) did very well with his plane on the 1st flight itself  so it is not all that difficult ;D.

Can try the following steps, as I did and got into simulator flight.

1. Buy a good Tx - invest for one that will last a long time - these aren't cheap even at the prices offered online.

2. Download FMS simulator.

3. Go to www.smartpropoplus.com and download the smartpropoplus package and follow the cables and installation steps (cabling is pretty easy with some spare wire to set up the Tx with the simulator) on that site.

4. Start off with flying on the simulator.

Yes, what I meant is explained in the two replies above.

If you can afford it, get a good radio with a trainer/sim port that will last for a while (years), and get a sim cable (or build one of your own).  You can then get FMS, or even other/better sim software off the web.

RealFlight from GreatPlanes is a great sim. Will be nice if it is available locally, may be expensive. There are free downloadable demo versions available from www.realflight.com as well. But that does not support a joystick interface. AFAIK FMS is the only one that is free and usable with a Tx.

To me the best way to start in this hobby is getting one of those many chinese made toy RC planes which are available for Rs.1000 to Rs.1500 in local toy shops. They come with everything fitted and RTF from the box. They are usually made of plastic fuselage and foam wings and tail feathers. They are tough and survive many crashes. These planes are usually fitted with two motors (one on each wing half). They use the motors thrust to maneuver  the plane. They come with a 2 Ch Toy type Tx and a Rx with 2 built in ESCs to control the speed of the motors,Flight battery and battery charger. After hand launching the plane and trimming the plane for level flight  to fly up you increase the speed of both motors, to fly down you decrease the speed of both motors and turns are accomplished by increasing speed of one motor and decreasing the speed of the other motor like that. They can be flown in very little spaces . They dont cost much and are much better than simulators to learn and overcome the problems like orientation confusions and such. They can be flown at a walking pace. I really think one should fly one of these toy planes before getting into the real things.

i think that the previous post is right. instead of investing a huge sum ( rather investment) into the hobby at the begining stage itself, buy some low cost rc gliders which comes in 2 or 3 ch. atleast i can fly without the fear of crashing and spending again for spares.

Akash,
I started in this hobby some 9 or so years ago just like that, and it is far better than spending hours on FMS type free simulators which I did at later times and found the first method is the better choice. IMHO FMS is a nice video game with virtually hundreds of plane choices and dozens of flying fields for free downloading which you can play with any RC Tx with trainer socket. I still play FMS whenever I wish but no free simulator can prepare you for the maiden flight enough. I don't know about Great Planes RealFlight or other such expensive simulators. Now I own good Radio systems and 11 hobby grade planes all imported but I never regret buying that 1st cheap toy type 2 ch RTF plane which taught me the basics in RC flying.

RAO,
You are right, Tolearn driving a car you need to sit and drive a car, No videogame can teach how to drive.
similarly to fly an RC plane one has to go for a real RC plane.
BUT FMS has its advantage too. One can get a feel of the remote and also get courage to fly the real RC plane.

Post by: anwar on April 29, 2009, 05:51:40 PM
With due disrespect, I totally disagree  ;)

Unlike a car or a real airplane, flying RC models require adjusting your mind to the reversal of controls (if the plane is "coming towards you"), and one needs to get his mind used to that idea before he tries the real thing.  And spending time on the sim is *the way* to do that.

Title: Re: What is the best way to get into RC in India, on a budget ?
Post by: tg on April 29, 2009, 06:58:14 PM
Thats true, but the point made out is that you learn better with the real thing than with a sim. Only that the real thing better not be a $500 deal when its in pieces on the ground ;D

Of course you need the real thing !  But that better be after spending at least an hour or two on the sim  8-)

Anwar,
you are right about learning about the orientation of the plane is easy on a simulator. But I think the rest of learning  like going up ,coming down ,taking turns etc is much easier and better to learn with a cheap 2Ch RC Toy Plane which costs only 1,000/- to 1,200/- only. It gives the feel of flying the real thing. Also these planes are made of plastic and foam and are pretty tough and survive many a crash.
Undoubtedly the best way to learn is from an experienced flyer using buddy box system.
Different strokes for different people. But we can agree to disagree on this matter and still remain friends ;D. Is'nt it :D

You got me thinking, Mr Rao   8-)  And no matter how hard I try, I cannot remember being enemies with anyone, ever !  ;D  And "disagreement" does not mean "animosity" !

Seriously, what I was trying to say is that the first minute of anyone's first ever attempt to fly a plane "by themselves (solo)" should be on a sim.  The rest can be cheap planes, buddy box, whatever....

Hi Guys,

My name is atul gaikwad and i stay in pune. A complete newbee although i did some research just visited some websites and gathered some information. I need some hand's on experience advices and am so glad i found the right people in this business.

Ok Here goes,

1) Isnt going for RC electric planes a better option for newbees ? They are quite reasonably priced as i can make out frm other websites.

2) Which radio to go for ? I understand we have to buy the latest so that incase we would like to upgrade the same radio can be used.

3) Which according to you guys, should be the ulimate plane to buy for a newbee ?

4) A friend of mine suggested to buy an electric plane and then upgrade to gas engines. Is this alrt or am just wasting my time and money with the electric planes ?

5) I love gas engines, infact since i have some lathe machines & some equipment i would really like to start manufacturing. Anyone has a diagram or smthing like that so that i can attempt to manufacture an engine.

Please comment..

Nice meeting you guys, tk care..

Hi Atul,

Let me try answering your queries one by one,

1) Going electrics for a beginner is indeed a wise option.  Psychologically, even though it is equally powerful to its glow counterparts, the fear factor is less becuase there is no sound!!  Secondly, the expenses for going electrics are cheaper till a 50 size aircraft.  Bigger than that, glow becomes cheaper.  Nowadays, high qulaity Lipos are available which would serve you faithfully for a long long time.  I learnt the electric way and even though I fly glow now and am also going to fly Gas engines, I still love and would keep loving my electric models.

2) I would suggest you to invest your maximum possible amount onto this segment.  I am going to invest for a third time now on a radio.  Initially I bought a normal 4 channel analog radio and then felt the need to upgrade and bought a computerized 2.4Ghz 6 channel Dx6i radio.  Now I am feeling the necessity to upgrade to a 9 or 10 channel one for my 50cc YAK.  Always go in for a 7 channel or a 9 channel radio if you can afford it or atleast a 6 channel programmable radio like the Dx6i or the 6EX.  That should be your minimum level if you plan on pursuing this hobby seriously.

3) It depends on individual perception rather than a single solid answer.  In RCG and RCU, you would find hundreds of posts debating this particular topic without anyone coming to any conclusion.  In my opinion, any high wing trainer like the Phoenix Paragon or the Hobbico Nexstar should be the most ideal for training.  But mind you, they are heavy and stable and would give you a solid feel, but they are balsa and prone to total destruction once you crash them.  On the other hand, the Multiplex Easy star / Easy Cub would be smaller and lighter, would not feel so solid in air, but they are also beautiful models.  They are EPP Foam which is next to indestructible.  They would also serve your purpose very well.  It would really help if you could modify these planes to include ailerons as well as the stock setup has only elevator / rudder setup.  Do some research and decide on what you want rather than go in with anyones suggestion.

4) Gas engines should be last in your scale of progression.  They are mostly available only in huge sizes.  Starting at 26cc (though smaller ones are available, they are quite rare).  So if you consider the size of planes that you are going to be flying using gas engines, then the responsibility and the skill should also be directly proportional.  So would recommend Gas planes only to people who are really comfortable with Glow and Electrics and are also suitably experienced to handle awkward situations in the air.  These are literally machines of destruction which should be handled with care and respect.
But I think you might be referring to glow engines here rather than gas engines... If that is the case, then again it is your wish to decide whether you want to go electric or glow.  Plenty of debates happening in other forums.  Do some homework and you would know the pros and cons of both..

5) I dont have any idea on this front.

So take your time.. do your research.. decide on what you want.. get an instructor and finally take the plunge!!

Happy Flying.. Welcome to the hobby..

- Chan

Atul,

If you like to build your own model then SPADs are the best way to go. Visit spadtothebone.com for more information and free plans.

Yes its true that the sound of an engine at full throttle/ full speed is scary for a beginner. But as you get used to it, the sound of the engine flying past you would be like music.. I bet you would want to do repeated low passes just a few feet away from you!

Hi Vivek,

Thanks for the superb explanation and the motivation. I am really all pepped up and all ready to zoom in this hobby. Although, i understand hasty decisions are not good for me.

As you said i will do some research and buy myself a radio first.

One more question vivek, i saw some websites like towerhobby and the radios featured there are so cheap compared to our indian websites. Should i go ahead and buy one if yes can you please recommend me a 6 or 9 ch ? I believe the only problem ordering from abroad countries is the cost involved in the shipping. Do you have a fair idea on how heavy is it on the pocket ?

I believe some guys are selling their radios too, but am not much of a second hand believer. No offense, just buying something new makes more sense to me.

Please comment..

Thanks izmile for your comment  :), yeah i know the engines sound is music and also when the plane zooms right besides you  {:)}

tk care guys..

cheers

Atul ,
Add Shipping + Customs Duty + other charges  and then compare prices .

PM me if you want some contacts in Pune .

I will suggest the electric route as by design they are  far more damage resistant , I would also say that you can start with an economical Radio  learn and then buy the latest technology available at that time when you get proficient .

You are right, and yes i think i will go for an electric first since its a better option to start with. I was thinking of going for a very nice radio like a 6ch or a 9ch can these radios be used for an electric plane as well ? I think this is a stupid question  ;D

Also, please give me pune contacts . Thanks again

Hey Atul,

Start with an electric as you have decided.  No harm in that.  Any radio can be used with any plane as long as the receiver can be fitted inside the plane.  I would advice you to get the best radio you can in the first place.  Or, if you dont want to feel the initial cost pinch, get a 4000 buck radio and use it on your trainer and when you get your second plane, you can get a nice computerized 10 channel / 9 channel radio.  But if you can invest now itself, it would save you the first 4000 bucks.  But then, its upto you to decide.  There are many beginners also starting on the hobby in Pune.  Mr. Sai would be able to provide you with some contacts there.

Moreover, when you buy from tower, say a radio for $500.  Add a shipping cost of roughly $50 to $100.  Customs of roughly $150 to $180.  Then calculate the cost.  Our Indian prices would be cheaper.  Availability is an issue though.

DX7 is available with http://rotor.co.in .. check that out.. and if someone is travelling down from Singapore / US, ask them to carry a radio for you.  That way you would be saving on the shipping and customs duty..

And dont call me Vivek..thats my brother's name  ;D  ;D.. am Chandrasekar!! you can call me Chan...

Ohh  ;D okie chan. Nice meeting you..

Aha about the radio part i need your help, my father is visiting singapore this month.

1) Can you guide me which radio to buy so that i dont need to upgrade & i can use it on any electric or glow plane i buy ?

2) Do you knw any websites or some hobby shops in singapore so that i can just give him the address and he can directly go there with the model no. and name and buy it for me.

3) Buying from singapore would be cheap ? He would still have to pay the custom duty i guess , rite ?

Please advice me on this part , thanks dude you certainly made my life a lot easy  ;D

Atul, Rotor has a store in singapore too... I guess the prices are roughly close... (with duty etc ) except that these stores abroad always have some sort of beneficial SALE. it's about being at the right place at the right time  ;D
the DX7 is also available at bombayrc.com with Rx (AR7000)
all the best!
I use the DX7 and its a great Radio!

Atul,

I am also going to Singapore next month (June 5th).  Singapore Super Sale starts on May 29.  I have planned to pick up a Futaba 10CAP (module based 10 channel Tx with 2.4Ghz module and Rx).. website price from Singapore Hobby Suppliers is 858 Sing Dollars.. check out http://shop.singahobby.com .. am still debating though.  But you might be able to bargain with those people specially during the Sale period and get some free stuff along or a reduction in price.. Check that Tx out.. That should last you a lifetime.. And you would be able to use a conventional module also with that!  When coming back to India, you can declare that as a toy item for personal use and escape customs duty!! So cheer up!

Atul,

My suggestion would be to start with cheap stuff. No harm in getting a second hand stuff if the price is low and has moderate quality. Buy or make an aircraft and fly it first to see if this hobby is cut out for you. I have seen a handful of begineers start this hobby with all their spirit just to quit and curse this hobby after their first crash!.. So, after trying out your first aircraft, (and having had your first crash.. 8-) ) if you feel that you can grow in this hobby, then you invest in the big things.

Fully Second this point of view  {:)}

HEY I thought this thread was for starting RC on a budget  ???  FUTABA 10 CAP,DX7i  is not BUDGET as far as I know it  ;D
After 5 years of Flying Bought a 6 Exap last year otherwise was using a sky sport and more recently a Turborix 6 channels Cheap tx.
Max Channels used till date just once is 5 never more than that . Normal usage 4 channel for fixed wing .
But remember my focus always is Cheaper the better I am not a high spending aero modeler ;)

I hadnt taken this into consideration.  I know how I felt after my first crash!! Down in the dumps with no confidence to touch a plane!!!  Luckily I did not give up! But many others have!! So a point to bear in mind!! Visit your local field a couple of times before taking the plunge and also think of the time required for all of this!! And one more thing, I started this hobby with a Turborix 6 channel radio ;) and then got the Dx6i and now the 10CAP!!

Building, flying and crashing are part of this hobby. But if you are able to get some stuff thats not locally available at low cost and if you are really interested in assembling/building and flying model airplanes I would suggest getting as many spares, parts and stuff as you can - that will help you in repairs, new builds. Some items available locally may not be as cheap as abroad. So, if model airplanes are a passion to you and you like to build and fly these no matter how long it takes to learn then invest what you can now. Its not just which TX or plane. Even I purchased stuff that was just right for my use in the US some five years back, but regretting now that I did not get stuff that was so cheap and easily available there and not even sold here or sold at crazy prices.

Agree with Ismail on getting stuff on re-sale if that matches your needs. Wish local hobby shops also sold re-sale/bargain stuff  :-\

Thank you guys, i will start with something that is reasonable & not so heavy on my pocket & let's see how it goes..

All the people here, newbees, intermediate and expert. I have a question, am sure there must be someone who has never ever crashed his plane let it be at any stage of his flying span.

Cheers  ;D

The definition of a crash has varied meanings.. What do you imply?? There are crashes in which nothing has happened to the model.. there are crashes in which only landing gears pull off and there are total writeoffs!!  I can assure you that there is no one here who has not had even a single minor crash!! I have ripped off many landing gears flying on rough surfaces and I even have one writeoff crash early into this hobby!! My mistake..went into the sun on a knife edge, lost orientation on low level and crashed full throttle badly..model was a total writeoff!!

Let us start a new thread to discuss only crashes... we can always learn from the mistakes of others  ;D ;D!!

Hi Guys,
No two landings or for that matter takeoffs are the same and as far as crashing it depends on whether it is a mistake on your flying or some malfunction on your aircraft/Radio. If you have done your homework (some sim time and visualization the most important for you can see the best of the R/C pilots too plan their sortie with a stick plane) then the first part (mistake in your flying) crash can be handled meaning reparable, but if your A/C controls malfunction the god save nothing can be done except watch and give the best input possible and pray at least at the last moment some miracle to happen.
Touch wood for me so far I have had hard landings and in one case I had my Javelin U/C ripped off due to my hard landing (landing with a side load due to cross wind didn't correct the crab at the last minute which is my mistake) but have not crashed were the model was in bits and pieces, thanks to my Radio which is so far so good for this you need an element of luck. I still have my first high wing trainer airworthy. So there is nothing which says that you have to crash to learn or in the process of learning too. Take help from your local flying field were a senior modeler who will be more than willing to teach. Study and analyze all material available regarding this wonderful and addictive hobby. Have a check list for everything you do, get ready for the field the previous day (Tightening, sticking, Charging and nothing missing in your toolbox which you may require in the field) go to the field with a tension free mind (this is a hobby and hobbies are supposed to make you relax from our monotonous life) socialize with fellow modelers learn from their ways of handling the model and take tips on different issues of flying and only flying.

Sorry I have deviated from the topic of discussion this is because the topic lead to crashing and to voice my view on R/C disipline I replied.

Kind Regards.........Alex

Nor the flight/s. No amount of "homework" can prepare one for unforeseen situations.

Crashes can, will and do happen and are "never the same" .

I have not read all the posts in this thread, but read the subject line and thot i should share my experience. Hence this may not be in sync with the sequence of replies here.

i am 54 years old (young?). So any learning was tough and time consuming.

i do not know which is the best way since i have not tried different ways.

1. Took some time to read RCGROUPS.com, various interesting threads and updated myself in terms of this hobby- technology- min 100 hours.
2. Made up my mind that i will start with electrics. Main reason: i am familiar with electronics and that most of the repair i will be comfortable.
3. Down loaded FMS and practiced on a trainer model: more than 10- 15 hours.
4. Went and got familiarised with the People and the equipments : few visits to local flying site.
5. Bought a second hand Futaba Radio, and a complete plane from one of the flier.
6. This person (sajeev) helped me a lot and did the hand holding and advize very patiently and sincerely.
7. He even built a small trainer plane some thing like STC only for teaching us.

From then there was no looking back.

The whole money spent from the time i started to till i manged a trainer independantly is about rs10,000.00 including all items. though i would have spent a lot lot more by now having spent> 2.5 years in this hobby.

Welcome to RC India :)

The package sure seems nice.  Here are some concerns though.

1.  You may end up with customs issues while importing ARFs including radio.  Also, customs charges have to be factored into the costs, which mean that you may find similar deals locally.

2.  A low wing plane like this Spitfire require good flying skills and are not really recommended for beginners. You may be able to get away with it if you try the first few flights on places like paddy/wheat fields covered with tall plants AND you have tons and tons of simulator experience.  A high wing plane is highly recommended.

hey thanks anwar for the speedy reply :)
so far i found bananahobbies with great deals, especially with rtf with 2.4ghz radios.

its gonna be shipped via ups from there. any idea to how much approx is custom charges to the same, rather how its figured. so i know, and dun end up spending 10grand extra more :-(

i already started training on the fms sim.

or; what about this baby; a parkflier f4 phantom II. http://www.bananahobby.com/1916.html

i am too flippin excited to jus buy one:p awaiting ur comments :)

That is even more trouble (harder to control) than the Spitfire :)

Also beware that Bananahobby itself has a level of bad feedback that can be considered a notch above what is normal for such businesses.

Regarding the duty, it seems to be entirely at the discretion of the customs official (although though there are published rules/rates).  A lot of times nothing is charged, various percentages of duties are charged at other times, and finally, at other times radios are confiscated !

Overall, please do consider the landed cost of what you are trying to get, and see if you at least get the radio locally.

Hi Warrel,

Welcome!

As regards customs, please check so many posts dedicated to this topic here. Just search "customs" and you should have them listed.

As for models, if you are ok with building, go for a foamy with so many plans and options available to start with. A search here should give you good options like blue baby and others...

If you dun want to build and one of those who like flying more than building or are too busy to build your own plane and experiment, go to a LHS and pick a high winger trainer (better still a glider). I am saying go to LHS because the feel of feeling the model and the radio etc. before buying, cant be beaten. Specially for a first timer. I am talking out of experience.

You could try the India Hobby Centre near congress house, off Lamington Road...

Many learned folks here will help you make a good and more importantly wise choice.

Have fun

+1 Srikant! A full blown RTF with Radio is all trouble to invite, specially in sensitive place like national capital!! I think someone already had his RTF held at customs, though few got them passed thru (but was some time back).

I too would suggest you to visit LHS for sensitive items like Radio and ARF/RTF. Don't do all the preparation to never enter the hobby if things gets stuck. I faced similar dilemma, so giving earnest opinion.

till then cant wait for my sim controller to be shipped..all excited, and still flying planes using keyboard keys on fms :p

i plan to get my first plane asap, but also want to invest good. as i would want to buy first  a 4channel 2.4ghz radio for starters.

p.s. if anyone could come along with me, or give me a contact, nothing like it. cheers! :)

If you really intend to stay in this hobby a 6 Ch computer radio would be a better choice than a 4Ch Radio. One would outgrow a 4 Ch radio pretty fast. Also don't buy RTF kits. It is much better to buy the Radio System and the Model separately. Go for the best radio you can afford and buy a kit or an ARF plane of your preference. Also go for a 4 ch control [ Ele, Rud, Thrtl and Aileron ] model trainer plane instead of the 3 Ch [Ele, Rud,and Throtl ] plane. In the beginning you can learn flying using only Rudder, Elevator and Throttle only and keep the Ailerons stationary and without aileron servo installed. When you are past your 1st learning phase, and ready for ailerons all you got to do is installing an aileron servo and start using the ailerons also and continue your training without having to buy a new plane with ailerons.

Not really  as per me  :
1) GWS  Slow stick : one of the most best Beginners plane widely discussed on RG  running in to 9 threads  is a 3 channel beginners plane :
http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=407136&highlight=slow+stick
2) Multiplex Easy Star : needs no Introduction as the best beginners planes  again a 3 channel.
3) Multiplex easy Cub : One of the new ones of Multiplex another 3 channel.

Even very experienced  RC Pilots  I know of eg Prady from Pune  or Chan still fly their easy Star  .

These 3 channels planes utility  does not end with learning they are the preferred  platforms for many FPV and UAV applications  which   use advanced Model avionics.

I agree with Mr Rao. getting a TX just sufficing your present need is no good. Invest in a good 6+ channel TX

1. Sanwa RDS8000  (13K)
http://www.rcdhamaka.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=89&products_id=225

2. Buy a used Fuataba/JR 7+ channel Tx and put an Assan Hack for 2.4Ghz (suggested for beginner so that they don't mess up with others Frequency on FM)

Hello all,
Let me first say i am VERY new to this hobby. And had been looking at some options to buy basic Radio systems (Rx/Tx). Checked with India Hobbies at Lamington Road, Mumbai. but found the Futaba unit they have is quite costly and as of now out of my budget. So was looking online. found Rcforall (chennai) is reasonably priced. but like mentioned here there are lot of options and much cheaper if bought from, say Taiwan or Singapore. and surely will like to buy from there. a 4-channel costs Rs.3500/- @chennai while ~Rs.1850/- @ HObbycity.com. also found lowpricerc.com a good option(excl taxes, i dont mind paying them). surely want to save on those 000s as i wud be messing around with this one(and a good posibility that i might damage it).
Have some questions regarding the same:

1) I read ppl r suggesting against buying Radios from abroad.. Why so?? whats the prob? if it attracts customs duty, how much is it?

2) most units available are 2.4GHz, but read in other posts that it requires Govt. permission. whats the story for 72Mhz? doesnt it require permission? (there are much more options available in 2.4Ghz range!)

3) my one friend is in US now n will be back in 2 weeks time. what if he carries a radio system for me on him? does it still attract duty, if brought in open condition (out of box). Or is it advisable to just purchase it locally??
sorry for the long post and the trouble. There might already some post regarding this but i am still reading them!!!

And RCFORALL, sorry brother no offence please, infact i appreciate your efforts on all online forums to make this sport more popular, but i am really on a budget and want to experiment first!!

Thanks in advance.

1) Multiple people have run into customs issues with importing radios.  There are threads here with details.  Some people had them held by customs, but submitting some paperwork got them released, but the experience was not pleasant at all.  http://www.rcindia.org/rc-general-topics/hobbycity-parcel-detained-at-customs!!!/msg14733/#msg14733 (http://www.rcindia.org/rc-general-topics/hobbycity-parcel-detained-at-customs!!!/msg14733/#msg14733)

Others have had no issues.  So be aware that you are trying your luck.  If you get customs charged, it is usually less than 25%.

Remember that you need to weigh in the customs, shipping charges and delay/hassle when ordering radios from outside.  Typically, the differences are not worth it, certainly on the low end.

2) 2.4Ghz is de-licensed for general purpose uses, so it is easier to explain to authorities (like in the thread above).  But to be fully legal, each model/unit has to be approved, in which case the only current option is IndianHobbies.com.  72Mhz is totally unapproved at this time, but it is widely used because of its availability (as opposed to 27Mhz, which is the only one specifically approved for RC in India).  2.4Ghz is more convenient and certainly the future, so that would be the preferred option.

3) Even though some risk exists in carrying a radio in person (only in checked in baggage, NOT hand baggage), so far every reported experience is that customs authorities have not created any issues with this method.  We have many experiences here of the same.  I guess they see it as toy remotes in Xray pictures, which they see many many times, so they do not specifically question it.  This may be a good option for you.  You can get some pretty good deals on US forum market places, like this : http://www.rcuniverse.com/market/category.cfm?catID=29 , if your contact in the US can get the deal done quickly.

I would suggest that you look at buying locally or getting it via your contact in the US. And 2.4Ghz, if you have a choice.

Hello Anwar,
Thanks for your guidance.. i am now waiting for my friend to contact back. also thanks for ur link. means if he cant bring it(he's travelling around) my best option would be buy locally!! will surely go for 2.4GHz then. BTW, IndiaHobbies' shop in Mumbai were selling 72Mhz.
thanks

"Indian Hobbies" that I am referring to is in Pune.

PS: BTW, I would say that pretty much 100% of the existing RC flyers are, as of today, using a non-fully approved radio.

Thanks Sai for raising to the occasion.

Mr Mpp, As Sai has said, please don't try to get ANY kind of Tx via post unless some one can carry it personally from US/West which again could be bigger disaster if they catch your friend at the ariport. Anyway, after Customs, Postage, the price advantage you percieve would greatly diminish.

You have decent options now from RCDhamaka, Rcforall and IndianHobbies, both Type Approved and grey.Go for them.

Definitely 2.4G is better for beginners, both as they wont interfere others on the fields accidentally (may be more common  with rookies) and you don't have older FM Rx/TX for Re-use. There are many cheaper 2.4G option there which are even more cost effective than FM. You can go for the cheaper 2.4 systems in the market like Sai has, better still, look out for good OEM used Tx (Futaba, Jr, Sanwa etc) and get Assan Hack module. This would give you better support, feature, reliability as you would have a proven base (OEM TX), and continued support from Assan in form of Rx.

Like Mr Astha I thought I will also share my experience of getting into RC on limited budget so here it goes.

Though there are many ways of getting into RC in most economical ways, I for one would very strongly agree with Mr Anwar on the choice of Radio aspect and the time to be spent on SIM and Mr Sai on the choice of airframe and electric aspect.

Though getting into RC was since my young year’s dream, Like Mr Astha I had started very late in this hobby at the Age of 37, just year and half before.

I read, read and read a lot. Though many cheaper radio were available, decided to pick up Futaba 7C 2.4 Ghz on the line of Mr Anwar’s point of view.

However I was very, very lucky to have picked up the 7C 2.4 Ghz first and then later 6EX 2.4 Ghz from ebay bid under 7K only ( I was lucky that it was before the Radio and customs issue). Only that it was Mode –I and I had to convert them both to Mode –II both mechanically and in the setup. Even the almost brand new 6EX 72 Mhz picked up from ebay last was for under 4K. (The Idea was adopted from how Mr Dave entered into RC in youtube video RCPower.com)

For me understanding basics of RC Plane was from many hour of reading again and again

http://sky.prohosting.com/air2/index2.htm

Building and flying technique was from many, many endless hours of youtube video’s which is by the way still continuing.

Development of flying skill was purely from many hours of FMS, since I am alone in RC in Jhansi. Now improvement of skill is still going on FMS and Clearview SIM.

So I started into RC in electrics under 12K (May be I was way too lucky, or may be my patience paid off)

So when I actually went to the field and started flying it was within two to three crash, trashing of only airframe (Since I started with EPS Only) I was comfortably airborne even though being alone.

I for one would strongly recomend that one should not compromise on the RADIO. As it is one of the most important component which will stay with you for many many year now that you have taken a decision to venture into the world of RC.

Thanks Guys for ur reply,
Anwarji, deals on RCuniverse are lot tempting, only prob is doing the payment! and my friend is unable to arrange that with the sellers there. :-( He'll be in California for a week but i dont think any stores could guarantee delivery that fast??
I think i'll go for RCFORALL. Just waiting for my friend to give a (negative) confirmation.!
Btw, Ujwaana, i didnt understand this:
" You can go for the cheaper 2.4 systems in the market like Sai has, better still, look out for good OEM used Tx (Futaba, Jr, Sanwa etc) and get Assan Hack module. This would give you better support, feature, reliability as you would have a proven base (OEM TX), and continued support from Assan in form of Rx."

Also "both Type Approved and grey.Go for them. " do they also sell in grey??
I also have some basic questions about the systems which i'll post in beginners section.
Thanks
Meghan

Sorry, but "branch" of what ? What does "we" refer to ?

PS: Kindly do not use all capital letters, as it is considered SHOUTing on online forums. Also, if you have a question that is unrelated to this thread, please start a new topic on the same.  I can sure feel your excitement :) Please take your time, and read the "RC India Gems" before asking questions.

Depends on your budget and plans.  If you have enough budget and long term plans, a brand radio with better display and features would be the right thing to do.

I am not sure if more can be said about this subject other than what is in this thread : http://www.rcindia.org/radios-and-receivers/is-this-a-good-radio-offer/ .  If anything is left out in that thread, it is that Airtronics does not seem to have got the exposure it deserves.

what is the best way to get in to rc,, fling the electric planes , i didnt find anhy thrill in it no sound and you wont get the feeling of flying, so cheapest way to start is, get a model from mr. Irshad ahamed calcutta ,its only 1800 rs , 4 servos 2000 futaba 4 channel radio , about 4000 rs a pump 500 rs, and 4 pen torch batteries. an os engine 40 size another 4500 rs. so all together 13000 rs, and the models from irshad ahamed is reaklly very strong durable models, its like calmato, painted and very steady high wing trainer.in banglore   Mr.easser is making a trainer but its not cute to see , its like a bick box fling with wings but models are very steady  and this both planes are very strong and small small crashes wont reflect in it. the imported chiness stuf ,balsa one crash finishes everything, and its soo difficult to repair. prakkat, and ershad and easser selling all props , spinners ,hyorns and all which is indian made ,its very cheap when compaired to imported stuffs, prakkat

Hi there, I have not heard of Irshad Ahamed in Kolkata. However, if you provide the contact number of Irshad Ahamed, then I too would like to see what he is offering for Rs.1800 and provide feedback to others on the forum.

Secondly, Prakkat can you please confirm if you meant Irshad Anwar of Park Street Kolkata?... Cause I would like to to warn you that his prices differ with every phone call... (just my opinion and not bad-mouthing a fellow seller)... We have had bad experience with this person (does not have a shop)... The prices quoted were higher when my friend spoke to him in English and asked for recommendations on which RC products  to buy. Whereas, when we called and spoke in Hindi and informed exactly what we wanted the prices were lower (about 20-25%).

You want to spend Rs.2000 n a Helicopter that will fly inside your drawing room or do you want to fly it outside? if it is the latter, forget about it. What you will get for Rs.2000 will be a waste of money.

However, for that price you will get a decent Indoor Micro heli (6 inch length approx) which will be operated through infra red 3 Ch RC. Check ebay, you will know what I mean.

Or else, hike up your budget to around 3.5 K and you will get a range of 3Ch Co Ax Helis (24 inch length approx) which can fly outdoors in still weather.

Regards,

VC

hi guys
im totaly new to rc flying though i am a bit ok with rc cars
thought there was no use make a new topic for my worries
so to start with rc flying as far as i have understood reading the forum this is what u need:
1) esc
2)lipo
3)motor
4) 4 or 6 channel radio
5)glider or plane model..

anything im missing on??
totally noob in this area
i was thinking of ordering these gliders

also i was thinking of buying this radio as it falls perfectly under the tight budget
http://flying--rc.blogspot.com/search/label/Radios%20/%20Receivers
can it be used for a simulator too?

Title: Re: What is the best way to get into RC in India, on a budget ?
Post by: rajathv8 on January 12, 2011, 12:58:59 PM
Hey dodo you need smaller things as well -
-->Lipo charger
-->Proprer connectors and shrink tube - depends on where you are buying from (some come with the connectors in place)
-->8 AA batteries for transmitter
-->Your plane will go no where witout a PROP :D
-->since you are a beginner you will need a prop saver and a few band's

Yes it can be used with a sim. I have the 4ch version of this. I prefer the 4ch as it comes with manual servo reverse whilt the 6ch comes without it - you need a laptop to chang servo direction. Servo reverse is essential so go for a radio with manual servo reverse.

Those are chuck gliders. They are NOT RC. My personal opinion is that those gliders are the best way to start.
It keeps you busy for a while.
It is cheap and is a lot of fun if done properly
It gives you time to "read" and learn about RC (very important)
It gives you time to "meet people" and learn. (Very very important)

Dodo i will stress on these two:
LEARNING - There is no perfect solution to any problem in RC and often your knowledge saves you time, money.
MAKING FRIENDS - I am a beginner myself and have made many awesome friends wtr RC. They have helped me a lot!

Starting with the chuck glider or directly going in for electric is upto the beginner :)

What should one do to start ?

I am absolutely raw in this I just broke a cheap chineese counter rotating heli when i almost was able to fly it. I plan on making my own plane out of it but i dont intend to send much on this.
The old heli made me fall in love with helicopters and i have been doing lot of reseach on the same that made me realise i cant make my own heli from scratch (all on my own-parts and all too)

So guys since you all are in it throughout tell me what should i do ESP ANWAR
assemble the kit with portion of the kit imported and portion bought from indian hobbies Radio with servos or buy it online with the works (ofcourse i am also worried about the budget).
How much will be the shipping charges @ hobby king /Banana Hobby/ xehli
Such kit obviously does not allow you to fine tune the kit with the transmitter something like Spektrum DX6i (this is the best and only kit i know)
One more thing DX6i reciever if it gets damaged its not on indian Hobbies can we couple any other make reciever  also working at same frequency or we have to get spektrum Rx only only. I really want to get into this big time and get another heli flying and definitely not a useless Chinese thing.
Having cursed china i came across a xheli youtube post where the packing itself had "MADE IN CHINA" written surprise surprise
anyone can i get stuff from china why the hell get stuff circuiting through US when we can get it from our neighbor but till now noone had replied to me on anyone of my online price requests. If anyone had any joy plz mail me.
can anyone tell me where can i get a RC helicopter PS2 simulator (the one on pirates bay is of no use) help me get the hang of it before i spend my moolah :D

i totally agree sim is good way to have a shot a few times and it also gives a good mind setup. one can also paint the area under the wing with different colors like red for right side of wing and yellow for left. this way it's easy to understand left and right easily even the aeroplane at a distance if its visible enough.

i think that the previous post is right. instead of investing a huge sum ( rather investment) into the hobby at the begining stage itself, buy some low cost rc gliders which comes in 2 or 3 ch. atleast i can fly without the fear of crashing and spending again for spares.

i m new to this hobby.
apart from what all has already been said , i feel there is a smarter way to make learning quicker.
crashes  are bound to happen  initially so rather than going for many cheap plane go for a medium  budget plane with stabilization systems which can recover its cost by avoiding crashes. it can be taken as next step after SIM.

Though very old thread, but many newcomers are seen taking bad decision for starting their first model.
At present, the costing comes to,

Tx/Rx - 6 Channel FlySky - 2195 + 700(Shipping) = 2900 (RCBazaar)

Servo - 3 x 9gm Sevo (TG9)- 3x160 = 480
30A ESC - 530
2812 Motor - 480
Prop Adapter - 90
7x6 prop - 6 Nosx45 = 210
Battery - 490
Charger - 450
Shipping from Hobbysea - 100/-

Ashume, soldering joint between ESC & Motor,

Coro wing & Body -from Ad, no cost.
20ml CA Glue - 25/-
Sand Paper - 5/-
Misc. Screw - 10/-
Horns from SimCard covering plastics - no cost
Pushrod - straighten 2000 watt heater coil - 30/- passed through Flute of Fuselage.

=5800/- (Less than 6K) Huh, Good Combo.

And An RTF Plane 3998 + Shipping from RCBazaar inc. all accessories.

And 2nd Option, is RTF.

RTF from  RCB  is without Tx Rx, Batt lipo, charger,
also it is foam....

http://rcbazaar.com/products/1063-sky-surfer-with-motor-esc-servos.aspx
so its 6K + 3k for Tx another 1.5K for batt and  charger....
total: 10.5k

also  i do not  suggest a scratch built foam/coro plane( or  any  other alternate material ) for one  to start into RC.... if he seriously wants to get into the hobby....! a plan build balsa plane is what i suggest will  be a  right track for serious aeromodelling....

Hi Cari - Welcome to RC India :)

Just go through the "RC India Gems" threads that are relevant to your quest as a starting point. Please do read quite a bit before making any purchase, especially the threads on which models make best beginner planes, best shops to buy from etc.

+1 with aerovishva for balsa model.
agree with kalyanprodhan as well for the glider as first plane..
I more thing i would personally refer to make the first plane as a perkflyer, wingspan not exceeding 30".
One basic reason for choosing parkflyers is that you wont gain much weight, so momentum during flight is also less, so the tendency of breakage of your model becomes less on crashes.

My two bits...
Dx61 i am using and it is good.
To keep initial cost down choose an EPP or EPO pusher. Learn the basic controls.

I know many people who are quite happy with the DX6i for a long time.  A 7 channel would really be a better choice, if you are into big heli / big plane flying.

At the 6ch level, the Spektrum is better than the Futaba in terms of display and programming which matters everyday on the field.

Hello, BEGINNERS I wanted to state SOME ways that will help you to start off in RC  -

As a beginner you will have to face a LOT OF CRASHES if you think that you can just go in some field crank up the throttle, get wind under your plane/helicopter and fly like the PRO you saw on that YouTube video, or any other video. Those guys in the video have had their fair share of crashes, and if you think you can fly like them the very first time you fly,you are completely WRONG and i am sorry to tell you this  :-\. But there are many ways to start learning RC vehicles and different crafts have different learning curves. Here i have stated some ways to get into this hobby. Even after doing all this i wont say that you will never crash. Crashing is a part of this hobby.

A] The RC Flight Simulator
B] Learning on Cheap Chinese planes
C] Courses offered by  professional individuals and Professional RC clubs
D] Go to the nearest RC club and ask an instructor to teach you the basics
E] Attend any event occurring near you

A] The RC Flight Simulator:
An RC flight simulator is a computer program that allows pilots of radio-controlled aircraft/helicopter to practice on a computer, without the risk and expense of a damaging a real model. Besides the obvious use of training beginners, they are also used for practicing new aerobatics, evaluating a model before buying it, and to allow flight practice when conditions are otherwise unsuitable
There are many flight simulators available on the market today of which most are commercially sold and some free simulators.
According to me some one NEW to RC should start out with a free simulator and then invest in a commercial one to hone their skills even more.
Although i dont know of all the commercially available simulators i have given  some of them with the FREE simulators listed below:
Free Flight Simulators {:)} :hatsoff: ;D -
1) R/C Desk Pilot: It is one of the few good free simulators and has a lot of aircraft options available which have been created by users.
Download link - http://rcdeskpilot.com/download
Another link for a diffrent setup and models offred by a european RC company BMI - http://www.bmi-models.com/fs/
Links to all the diffrent planes that are available for FREE(RCDP)-
a)http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/thumbgallery.php?t=1102829&do=threadgallery&type=files&group=none&starter=no - Different models created by frankfly,Metman,Eves and GeneralFailure(Creator of RCDP). As these are zip files you just need to open them copy the file inside and paste them in the RCDP aircrafts file, and the new craft should come in the simulator.
b) Parkzone Radian link - http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showpost.php?p=16432620&postcount=985
2) Flying Model Simulator(FMS) - Is another great free simulator
http://modelsimulator.com/
3) FlightGear - http://www.flightgear.org/
4) Slope Soaring Simulator - http://www.rowlhouse.co.uk/sss/
5) AlphaMacSoftware's RC Helicopter Simulator - http://www.alphamacsoftware.com/index.php (for MAC)
Commercial RC Flight Simulators
1)Aerofly Professional Deluxe - http://www.aerofly.com/afpd/index.html
2)AeroSim RC - http://www.aerosimrc.com/
3)ClearView - http://www.rcflightsim.com/
4)Dave Brown RCFS - http://www.dbproducts.com/store/rcfs2001.htm
5)Digital Aircraft Modeller - http://www.digitalaircraftmodeler.com/
6)FSOne - http://www.fsone.com
7)Phoenix R/C - http://www.phoenix-sim.com
8)PicaSim - http://www.rowlhouse.co.uk/PicaSim
9)PRE-Flight - http://www.preflightsim.com/
10)Great Planes RealFlight - http://www.realflight.com/
11)HELI-X - http://www.heli-x.net/
12)X-Plane - http://www.x-plane.com
You will need a controller to practice on these sims so i suggest these:
If you are really serious about taking up this hobby then you should go for the Avionic RCB7X(7CH) offered by RCBAZAAR(included simulator but a bit costly, this transmitter receiver combo is a great initial investment and will last you for a longer time) -
http://www.rcbazaar.com/products/1773-avionic-rcb7x-7ch-tx-with-7ch-rx-and-wireless-simulator.aspx
And this is another great 6 Ch tranmitter receiver combo that can also fly real models, offered by them is(Cheap can be used with most simulators on PC with the included USB cable):
http://www.rcbazaar.com/products/396-fs-ct6b-6ch-24ghz-transmitter-receiver.aspx
Another GREAT CHEAP option is to buy these, which come with simulators (Dummy controller, they only work on PC cannot control real Craft)
a) http://dx.com/p/x-power-8-ch-usb-rc-flight-simulator-kit-left-throttle-transmitter-65739
b) http://dx.com/p/dynam-rc-tech-6-channel-usb-r-c-airplane-helicopter-flight-simulator-with-fms-software-mode-2-961015580

B] Learning on Cheap Chinese RC crafts:
There are a lot of cheap Chinese models out there which are quite good for training on and are offered cheap.
These planes basically have smaller motors mounted on them and use differential thrust for maneuvering, this just means they speed up one motor and slow down the other to turn etc. While for helis the Chinese versions are usually Co-Axial(two counter rotating propellers that generate thrust, speeding one of the propellers adds torque on the body of the heli in the direction it is rotating) they have two propellers one on top of the other. Both of these types and other cheap Chinese planes and helicopters can be bought at your nearest mall and Toy store, usually medium sized toy/gift shops have them. They are very great to learn absolute basics of RC flying and will give you a feel of the controller and the hobby. They are usually very cheap(Micro Indoor flyers that is(Which achieve stable flight in 0 kmph winds)), these will range anywhere between 700 - 3000 Rs, you can get them cheaper for like 300 - 400 in second hand on OLX - OLX.com, and you can also get the second hand ones in your area. RC cars and boats are available too, i will guarantee you that a medium sized gift-shop/Toy shop will have RC cars at least ;), if you want to get into them.

C]  Courses offered by Professional individuals and Professional RC clubs:
Search the forums you will find some courses that are offered by individuals as well as clubs, though it might not be around your vicinity courses are a great way to learn from the PRO's of the hobby, many courses will be long, 3 - 6 months or even a year but some are just 1 - 2 week crash courses that will teach you the basics and the intermediate levels of the craft type you are interested in. Ask the person offering the course if you have to bring anything, like your plane/heli/car/boat + the accessories and they will teach you to use it or if they are offering everything the plane/heli/car/boat + accessories or if you have to bring the accessories like the transmitter with buddy cord connection. This topic is one such great course offered by Harveer Singh Sodha(for Planes) - http://www.rcindia.org/rc-events/learn-to-fly-in-5-days-flat/msg135041/#msg135041. These courses will help you a lot as the exact mistakes and correction will be pointed out to you by the instructor and every individual learns differently so going through courses help a lot. ;D.

D]Go to the nearest RC club and ask an instructor to teach you the basics:
If you have a RC club  near by just go there every chance you get(That is the days they fly and you are free) and just watch how they fly the planes and keep on asking them questions, every RC hobbyist wants to tell how they acquired their skills and give some information on how you can increase yours. By doing this  you will not only get to know more about the hobby you will also get inspire a bit and if you stick to a particular instructor/flyer then you probably may befriend him and he may let you try flying on a buddy chord or one of his machines(usually the cheaper one) or the one he thinks is suitable for you. Dont hesitate and take all the advice the instructor/flyer has to  give you.

E]Attend any RC EVENT occurring near you:
Attending events occurring near you or a place you can visit will help you understand the complications and necessities in the hobby, it will also let you decide which type of crafts you like and what each one has to offer, as a beginner you should usually start off with slow stable crafts and transition into the faster ones, but which ones you want to master are your choice, Sailplanes, 3D, aerobatic planes, war birds etc.
An event will usually showcase all the types (medium and bigger events that is). And events also let you see the different masters involved in maneuvering the craft and will let you know different skill sets required to maneuver different class of Planes/Helis/Cars/Boats.

There are many sites that will sell you different RC products, go visit them to see the wide variety of model options that are available. Dont ask yourself what if i crash my Plane/Heli? Learn how not to crash your respective craft and GOD FORBID your craft crashes just tell yourself at least i learnt a new way to crash and i wont repeat it.You ask any experienced pilot and each one will remember their crashes more than their victorious flights.RC is all about having FUN.So have FUN learning, flying, driving.

[mod edit] Nice write up by neil, went to where it deserves to be, this thread

THis is how i started..

get a cheap 4ch heli. It would cost around 2.8 - 3 k. (v911 best option)
As this tiny helis are sensitive you will be learning alot..
This helis are like crash - reset - fly - crash - reset @
After getting comfortable with the heli , but a glider. eg. hawk sky, skysurfer ---
and believe me it wont crash.. :)

Hi Guyz,

I am new to the RC world, and am reading different post and videos and articles and what not on RC.. Really fascinating stuff, i want to get in this hobby, and after reading a lot of stuffs, i think the best way for me to start is a SIM.. so i plan to buy either of the 2 radios
1. Avionic rcb7x
2. FS-TH9X 9ch 2.4GHz
Both are from RB bazaar, the FS-TH9X does not come with a Sim i believe , now what i need is which radio i should go for, and the FS-TH9X is not available either with Rc bazaar for now..

Also wondering if the radio can draw power from the USB when using the sim, so as to save the battery ?

Kindly advice, I am ok with spending about 5K or so on the Radio..

Regards
Peter

hey rocky.... welcome to rc india!
a good way to start is get the fsth9x, and a sim dongle (both of which you can find on rcbazaar)
the fsth9x is better than the avionic, because it has 2 more channels, and also, it is a very popular tx, with lots of user support...
i guess a sim dongle will cost around 1000 bucks, but i dont know for sure....

hope it helps :)

I just received my RCB7X today, and  :( :( :( the simulator dongle does not get detected in my laptop ( XP ) or desktop ( Win7 )

I have followed all the videos from Razaar, installing the g4 and emu also.. but it just does not get detected.. I would be calling the RcBazzar guyz tomorrow mrng, guess it is too late now...

Just worried that hope it is not the issue posted here some months back regarding a faulty chip, I waited too long to try the sim this weekend

Probably I am very odd for this hobby but however it attracted me. I am a middle aged fellow as well as a beginner in this field. I have very little theoretical as well as practical knowledge of making aero models as well as flying. This forum i found is really helpful. Can u guys please help me where from can I start with a very low budget ? Can I make slow flyer planes made of foam / Cheap material as a starter ? Can I get any tutorial/guideline regarding this ?

Thanks and reagrds

The best way is to find a group of flyers, and get associated with them. If you want to start on a low budget, buy a radio set (a good one, if need be second hand) - this has a good resale value - and a trainer like Easystar 2 (RC Dhamaka) or sky surfer (RC Bazaar)

Do be prepared to invest about 15~20 K initially.

There are suggestions on how to go super-cheap, but when you are a beginner, flying itself is a tremendous strain! The last thing you want is faulty equipment, or a poorly made model - that is the easiest way to put you off the hobby for good

This is my $ 0.02 worth

I've probably stirred a hornet's nest, and many people will advise how the radio set can be got in 2 K, and you can build a model in 1 K........your choice

Sir ,
Investing 15K is a bit difficult for me .Well I can save for  a few month. Where can I get a second hand Radio ? Can you give me some sample spec. and cost ? The Trainers you suggested comes around Rs 5000. A new Avionic RCB7X (7ch tx with 7ch rx and wireless simulator) in RC Bazzar costs Rs 5000. Am I required to invest some more ?
Please excuse my ignorance.

I have no flyer group operating nearby.

I don't have any experience in flying. In that case should I start with a SIM ? Sorry for my confused state....

hey rc novice, if your in cal, I know that flying happens every Sunday at a race course over there.. something starting with m or so, forgot the name though... if you are serious about rc, you will need a few things :
for the ground-
a remote (that's the obvious one. good ones include turnigy 9x/fsth9x) - 5000/-
a charger(not a cheap 2-3s charger, I'm talking about the better digital ones, like the turnigy accucel 6)
- 2000-3000/-
for the air -
a plane (surprise) a good one to buy is the bixler/skysurfer/easy star. it is a very good beginners plane. you can check out rcbazaar, rcdhamaka, rcbharat etc... they stock this.
an ARF plane will set you back around 5k+shipping...
so the total is coming to around 13... out of this, 7k is a one time purchase. you use the same charger and remote for all your models...

you can check out the rc India gems section for further explanations on the parts of the plane etc...

hope this helps! ;D

We all start in a 'confused state' :D Nothing to worry about

There are many fliers from Kolkatta on this forum. Do a search and you will find them. Kalyan-da  is very senior, and very helpful.

The RCB Avionic Radio has very good features; however, not having used it or interacted with someone actually using it, it's hard for me to comment. Again, do a search on this forum, and you are sure to find lots of reviews. My personal experience is that Futaba, JR, Hitec, Spectrum are very good radios. FrSky is supposed to be good, as is it's Taranis model. Flysky is cheap and popular, but one of the guys flying with us went nuts with it's very short range, which caused him two crashes, lots of monetary loss and heartburn. Second hand radios are advertised almost daily on this forum. You need minimum 4 Ch, 6 is good

Besides what you have listed, you would need Servos (4 to start with, about 250~ 300 ea for 9 gm) a motor (depending on size from 700 upwards) at least 2 batteries (1000 upwards each) a charger, some tools, and miscellaneous.

Feel free to PM me if you want :)

I would say you should first visit the RC field first.
Speak with some of the people around there,
you will get lot of suggestions on procuring your equipment.
try making some friends .
if you are lucky you can get used stuffs for a better price, bcoz lot of people have excess of stuffs that they are ready to give to serious pursuers of this hobby.

hI RC-Novice

You can go with this plane
http://www.rcbazaar.com/products/1138-sky-surfer-v2-motor-servos-esc-lipo-charger.aspx

its a beginner plane and very forgiving. very stable and easy to fly. this combo has everything except Transmitter and receiver. which you can buy separately.

My suggestion would be to read as much as one can about flying the models.... as that is the most difficult part.
Firstly.   Read some aerodynamics which is all physics but very usefull when it comes to flying....  Last month I saw a guy trying a tailwind take off and ending up in the ground with the wing tip broken......  He knew nothing about aerodynamics and why only head wind take offs must be performed......
Secondly.   Visit the local RC fliers and watch them.  You will gain a lot of knowledge.
Thirdly.     Buy a simulator and a chuck glider (costing about Rs 100+ /-) as this will help understand the construction of a model.
Fourthly.   Buy a glider.... Electric or IC engine..... Electric can be direct from HK with a foam model.  IC can be a .15 Glow or a Sharma 1.5 (cost approx 3000 - 4000) and an ARF Apple Box (even a kit of Apple Box will be fine).  Gliders are easy to fly and something like Apple Box flies for over 10 minutes with an engine run of about 1 minute and hence works out extremely cost effective.  Later when comfortable can move to an aerobatic glider or a powered aeroplane.

FINALLY....... OWN CONSTRUCTED model will give more pleasure than an ARF..... thats my view.

i have the motor servos propeller etc....
so coming to my problem.....
as i have already spent money on electronics and my other hobbies
my parents have restricted their budget to 3500 more
but the radio itself costs me around 3000 and i found some cheap batteries but not the radio....
i tried ordering from hobbyking i was almost getting everything including pushrods , control horns etc...but wen lottering around in the forums i found that radios get stuck in customs which i dont want  :banghead:

Manish.

Try to avoid buying radios from international site as most of the time it held by custom department, and you have to pay almost same amount as shipping charge.

you can look into this below link, if it fits into your budget.

Hello Manish,
Good to have youngsters like you here.
Getting a radio, battery and a battery charger as well is a little difficult in 3500. All I could say is don't order radio from any international store. I'd seen both good and bad part of it :banghead:(once came in 15 days and the other came in 1 month 25 days with custom duty)
So, its better to stick to Indian Stores.
You can go for a Flysky FS CT6B 6 channel radio. Comes under 2500/- and is computer programmable, but you'll have to search for it because out of stock on almost every store.
Next, comes battery and charger. Battery since, you are a beginner 1000mAh 3S is enough for almost all your models you'll build. 1000mAh you'll get for around 700/- or even less.
And then comes the charger so first go for a basic one and then upgrade to good one... Here are the links:
http://www.quadkopters.com/product/b3ac-charger/ (http://www.quadkopters.com/product/b3ac-charger/)
Got a slow connection otherwise would have posted more links.
Hope it helps.

There is no point in buying pushrods from rc stores. Go to your nearest cycle shop and ask him for cycle spokes. They are 2mm thickness and are perfect. I have never used anything else ever since I found these.
Most cycle shops will give you one rod for Rs. 2
If you buy 10, you may be able to bargain and get 10 for Rs. 10, but it depends on your cycle shop.

I saw some used flysky TX RX on OLX..check if they are still available, but those are programmable. Think before you buy. I don't think New Flysky 2.4G CT6B will come in market again. It is obsolete as per quadkopters. i suggest wait for some time save some money and buy good stuff which will help you in long term.

Akash,
I started in this hobby some 9 or so years ago just like that, and it is far better than spending hours on FMS type free simulators which I did at later times and found the first method is the better choice. Now I own good Radio systems and 11 hobby grade planes all imported but I never regret buying that 1st cheap toy type 2 ch RTF plane which taught me the basics in RC flying.
hii i am from guntur, new to hobby and very confused too. if you are in tenali currently, i would really like to meet you and get some hints, i am an engineering student in Acharya Nagarjuna University. please reply. your experince and suggestions would be very valuable in my college projects too.

Unless I'm totally lost and out of place regarding my query, I find most of the posts in this section on TX/ Rx via-a-vis Airplanes. So far I've been using salvaged  TX/ Rx units from damaged or discarded RC Toys, mostly cars for my boats. The basic electronics for to and fro motions and the steering system served my purpose well for boats. Now I want to move on in the 2.4GHz arena and was wondering if I can use FS CT6B 6-Channel for use in my new boats and ships? If I'm out of place here, will be grateful if I am redirected to the appropriate forum thread. Thanks in advance. :)

Greetings! I have just joined this forum. I was always fascinated by flight. I am 46 years old and have decided to start this hobby now. I find this forum very informative, thanks to all the experts out here. Before building I want to learn RC flying. I mean I want to know the controls on the remote and its corresponding action on the control surfaces of the plane. So can I use a Computer animated flight simulation software which gets controlled by a simulation RC remote(exactly like the real RC for aero-modelling) ? This would prepare me for real RC flying. Am I on the right track? Your recommendations are solicited. Thanks and Regards. Colonel S Philip

Hello,

Yes you are on right track. Using simulator is best way to get into RC flying. (You can crash as many times as you want to)

You will obviously need a real RC plane later. So first decide that you will be scratch building one or will be buying RTF (Ready to Fly).

If you can spare some time and eager to learn then you may go with scratch building else RTF.

I started few months back and I went with scratch building and still learning to fly. The process is : Learn, build, crash, repair, crash, learn something new, apply it, build another, crash, repair, crash, repair, crash.....

RTF versions are built to perfection you dont need to do anything other than flying, as they are designed and tested by experts but if you crash it and need a replacement part, either it will be costly or not easily available.

Happy Flying!

Swapnil N. (by the way here's my first successful build)

I suggest getting a simulator first.. I.e a teansmiter basically and a software...
Learn the basics..
Don't skip the basics.
Learn how control surfaces work. Learn about how a wing generates lift.( if u wanna make a drone/ quad u can but its expensive)
Then if on a tight budget make ur own airplane. Perhaps some YouTube videos will help.
If budget is not an issue...buy one...perhaps a sky surfer or even a sky walker as a permanent future investment into fpv flying.

Diy cost will be at least 6k
And rtf cost will be at least 11k.
Helix and quads are fun..but a whole new topic and money.
