Baby Bootlegger is perhaps the most beautiful wooden boat ever built. She won the 1924 and 1925 Gold Cup race. The race began as a free-for-all in the early part of the century. However, when the racers developed into overpowered creatures with three and four V-12 engines, the race was changed in the twenties into a class with a requirement for four seats, one engine and a limit on engine size. It was to be a 'gentleman's run-about', and Baby Bootlegger was the pinnacle boat of this group. Today, the Gold Cup race is an unlimited class with Miss Budweiser and other powerful boats.

The model I am attempting to build is about 37" long (940 mm) and 6.5" Beam (about 165 mm)

This is a downloadable plan from john-tom.com.

I plan to build it with a MDF Frame, Sunboard skin and cockpit, and Teak Veneer planking. Power unit will be a watercooled SL 2848 3900KV Brushless Inrunner with a 70 A Birdie ESC.

This will be a leisurely build!!

Nilanjan sir, I am only trying to build it.......:D

The soot (carbon) left from Laser Cutting has to be cleaned from all surfaces which will have glue, as the adhesive will only stick to the Carbon. After trying various options, I found a file was best for the grooves, and for surfaces I used my palm sander fixed in a vice.

After running the Sander for 2 hours, my fingers were tingling from the vibrations for 3 hours after!  :giggle:

The plans show a motor shaft of nearly 18 inches. I am against long drive assemblies in principle, and I plan to use a 10 inch assembly.

Picture shows my power unit and the amount I will have to displace to do this. The motor location too will change.

The Shaft tube is 8 mm dia, and the keel is 5 mm thick  ??? ???  :headscratch: :headscratch:

Well, something to figure out how to do  ;D

I'll probably put 2 reinforcing pieces on either side of the keel....let's see  ;)

Only hassle is the shift in CG by moving the motor, and spatial adjustment. Of course, that fat prop tube has to be accommodated somehow  :headscratch: :headscratch:

The bulkheads have got tabs for alignment, which will be cut off later.

The mock assembly is done, with the boat upside down. Then, a strip of disposable material is tacked down onto the workbench. (I used sunboard)

The tabs are glued to the strip. Then when all is in place, the keel is epoxied in.

A motor mount is very critical. Besides it's basic job of fastening the motor firmly, alignment has to be maintained. With this kind of design, there is very little place (actually, none!) to fit a flat base on which to use a standard mount. So, improvisation.

VC, I've been there, done that (jugaad from leftover scraps etc.) In fact, this build already has a fair deal of that (e.g. the entire motor mount)

Jugaad - you should see the water pump that I have made for the RAF Rescue Boat today. Small 3 V motor screwed on to a PET bottle cap and neck - impeller fan blades from Sunfoam, intake and outlet pipes from discarded pens  ;D Squirts water upto a height of 3 feet. However, cumbersome to mount so I will go with a windshield washer pump.

The Baby Bootlegger deserves this kind of precision. I wouldn't try Jugaad (maybe a little bit only  ;)) if I was building her.............

What do you think the AUW should be? I think I'm heading toward 2 Kg!

Yes it is essentially a Crash Tender. It was used to rescue pilots from the Thames.

Yes, you need a pump. After the dunking in the Thames, they need a bath :D ;D

Fitted the rudder/Servo/linkage.

Used a standard servo, Hitec HS 311, and a heavy duty clevis with SS Pin. Also, 'locked' both sides with a small band of fuel tubing

Briefly tested the electronics/propulsion. All works fine. The motor is just very, very fast - a 3900 KV @ 12V is more than 40,000 RPM. Scary!

Dissembled everything. Back to the Hull now. Major sanding job, before applying the skin. Plan to use 2 mm Sunboard, with Resin Coat. Any suggestions?

2 ft x3 ft thermocole clad with aluminium sheet. Ply pylon. Fibreglass cowl for engine, tank & radio made over thermocole male form by equivalent of 'lost wax' method. Merco 35, 10x6, 2" spinner. Tractor, not a pusher. Full height rudder behind pylon. Since pylon was at the back she used to nose in under power in/on water. Ended up running it on wet grass in the lawn of the State Bank Inst of Info & Comm Mgmt SBIICM, Banjara Hills, Hyd. Sure scared the trainees. No pics because its lying somewhere in my junk in Lucknow.

Ask me about my glow RC Car sometime. So fast that by the time you cut throttle, she's banged against the opposite wall 100 ft away, hit the corner of the bumper and bent the chassis. Broke gearbox mount. Fried clutch.

Will post pics after i retire and go back to my junk, uncared for in 20 years.

Sun board is not a good choice for strip planking, heavy, very hard to sand, surface finish is a big question.
Planking with 8x3mm balsa/simul wood strips will be a good choice. 

You could consider cherry wood or teak veneer, they have beautiful grains.

Thank you Anjan. I was unable to get anything less than 2.5 mm Teak Veneer. And cutting it into strips is a problem

Maharana sir: where can I get Balsa strips, 3X8 or 3X10? My first choice was Veneer, but it was too thick. Any help is appreciated.

That is why I thought of 2 mm Sunboard. I used it in my Neptune, and got an excellent finish, but yes, it is heavy

Build update:

Not much today. Completed the sanding in preparation for skins, applied a coat of resin on the inside, and ruined my shorts when cyano spilled on them!

Neptune was sheet planked. Don't know how far it is possible in baby bootlegger.
But you can cut strips from balsa sheet.  

Very painful job, requiring the sort of patience I yet have to learn :D

Max 70 strips, around 6 to 7 balsa sheets (3"x36")

The other difficult part is chamfering each strip to fit

I too spilled cyano on my pants yesterday, i didnt realize it untill it beacame warm and i had to painfully rip off the hair that got glued on to the pant  :banghead:

how about formica for the sheeting? it's slightly flexible.

Now that the resin was dry, I could start on the skins.

The prow has seriously contorted compound curves. So I had to plank it perforce.

The rest was more straightforward. Completed the bottom.

Started work on the cockpit and hatches before putting the top skin. I will be putting the side skins last

Finished the top skin finally. Guys, beware of cheap so-called 'Industrial Grade' Cyanoacrylates. I used one of these, while fitting the top skin it foamed on contact with the Sunboard, and formed a horrible hard bubble. As this was between the frame & skin, I went crazy removing it. Stick to Fevikwick

I use this. No complaints whatsoever. Let me know if you need some. Best stuff for sunboard and acrylic.

Cutting out the hatch, and the hatch covers & cockpit

I used the cut outs from the deck to make locators for the hatch covers. I plan a role for these when waterproofing.

There are 2 hatch covers, one easily removable for the battery, and one screwed down for the motor & ESC.

Starting to look a bit like a boat; actually, more like an upside down dugout canoe  :rofl:

I had coated the outside with Resin. The sunboard skins needed strengthening, and impact resistance, hardness and toughness.

I put too thick a first coat, and it took 3 weeks to dry! Funda is thin coats, let them dry, then another coat.

Anyway, painting is done.  ;D

Next up is signage, then clear gloss lacquer.

After that, detailing

Neil: this boat is different, am not giving faux wood finish like VC did. I did try that in my Neptune.

After the sunboard there are 4 coats of Resin too. Then putty, then paint. After lettering, 3~4 coats of lacquer gloss.

Still a long way to go........

One long month has passed!

I'll use the brass prop after the maiden and trials. Very high RPM....3900 KV motor, so have to be careful

Used 2 Ball bearings 7*4 and stuffed vaseline in the prop tube.

Electricals and electronics hooked up (2848 3900KV water cooled motor, 70 A water cooled ESC)

Plumbing started - water intakes

Water outlet (one each side)

Used fish tank tees :D

Onward to bath-tub trials  ;D ;D

Just wondering; anyone here have any experience with water cooled ESCs and motors? My query is this: at slow speeds will the water circulate?

I expect (note, only expect :)) that at speed the water will get pushed up through the intake tubes and circulate. But a slow speed?

i Have water cooled ESC and water cooled motor...The water does circulate at slow speed as well. The water inlet that I have is a U shaped one on the bottom and suits well even at slow speed. Just keep the water pipes as short as possible.

The cooling water is forced through pick-up tubes (brass) through silicone tubes into the esc, motor cooling jacket & motor mount.

The water will flow naturally by pressure when the boat is moving. But when the motor is idling at low speed, there may not be enough water pressure to circulate the water through the system. That was my concern. I could put a pump, but will first conduct trials in the tub and see how it is. The picture in the next post shows the location of the water pick-up tubes

I don’t think heavy water circulation is required when the boat is at idling/slow speed.
But if the outlet is placed just below the waterline, there will less chance of air residing inside the tube and enough to keep the electronics cool even when the motor is off.  not sure though…

I am happy that after all this time there is still interest in this and I do get quite a few PMs.

As far as requests for plans go, I would like to reiterate that these are paid plans, protected under IPRs. In the beginning I have given where to get these. It is a very nominal fee.

Will certainly sail it, when the weather is better, and I have a suitable place.
