Title: Anteres cabin cruiser 2 - SCRATCH BUILD
Post by: sunk? on January 15, 2010, 05:56:20 PM
HI GUYS,
this is the launch/cruiser
(http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/hh268/dondecap/powerboat.jpg)
Not in competion, just a 'same build' sequence...
we may do things differently to this model.
eg........ I am using 'light ply' for the complete build.
for cutting I always make a copy of plans and then cut out the shapes and paste to wood for cutting.............
I find this to be one less step for mistakes.
here are my frames ready to be cut out of a sheet of 1/8th ply.

Don,

Welcome to the forum and there is absolutely no question of competition! It's good to have you here. I was floundering about on my own trying to generate interest about boats and ships.

Your boat seems to be shaping up nicely. Mine is on hold as I have been under tremendous work pressure these last few weeks. Now that you are around, I think I will resurrect it! Also, my Dremel should arrive in a couple of days. You take the lead, I'll follow.............

Cheers!

VC

hi vc
be good to show different aproaches to the same task..........
on reading more in the forum I think 11.1 volt motors may be too much for this babby..........so may have to use brushed instead of brushless,
I have 170, and 380 size which may well be good and then 400 brushless................... all ex aircraft and heli motors hahaha
ever seen a 200 mph cruiser????????  ;D

Hee Hee! Have you seen the very basic tools that I am using to build this baby?  :banghead::giggle: Am sure you are using 'propah' modelling hardware! (A bad workman always blames his tools!) Also the wood that I am using is not Balsa but Indian Silk Cotton Tree wood. About twice as heavy as balsa.

Just waiting for my Dremel to arrive on Monday (:|~!

First let me get her ready and trimmed, then I will worry about the power plant. Whatever it is, I will be using a brushed motor.

Cheers!

Don,

Seeing that you are based in the UK, and possibly have more expsure to like minded people (Boat / Ship modellers), would it be possible for you to share some Destroyer / Frigate plans with us?

Thanks.

hi mate.
I will look and see, but when I built my battleship KGV 1/200 scale (4ft) I ended up sending to poland for the plans,
today seems very ££ oriantated and free plans are few and far between............. plus not many 'scale' modelers aboutnow, more so in USA.
here its like fast racing everything, cars, boats etc

hi vc
here are a couple of web links worth looking at
as for plans.
the one I am doing is a fairly standard hull shape..if made longer at the 'mid' ship section and of coarse deeper all along with the stern rounded instead of flat it woud be very close to a 'big ship' shape.
I will coppy the bulkhead plan of my battleship and you will see the general shape for destroyer you need the same side view as the cruiser I am building  - in a longer deeper form obviousely - higher front and lower midship and stern was the basic shape of ww11 brit/usa destroyer .

a lot of the detail for my batle ship I had to work from pictures

hi vc
(http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/hh268/dondecap/key.jpg)
these two I had to hand,
what I had to do was buy a 'cardboard' model and then use the book of parts as a template for the model I was building. it worked QUITE WELL same as buying plans but more hard waring, you can cut the pieces out and use them as paterns or build the boat as a static model with the card plans
it was under £20 but 4 years ago now. here is the site, this type of plan is the easiest to get.

Just realised that in my exuberance, I almost hijacked your original Antares thread. Lets take this discussion somewhere else. Administrator, can you please accomodate this and the previous 4 posts to a new thread entitled "Ship Models" or something? Ofcourse only if Don agrees. This thread can remain exclusive for Don's Antares build.

What say Don?

hi guys
yes could be informative thread on its own.

here is a card plan for destroyer cheap
http://www.gpm.pl/eng/index.php?akcja=produkt&edycja=3246
just use the card as templates for you wood frames etc and hollow out acording to where the motor and battery etc go.
could the mods move these posts to a new thread say   model plans etc?
thanks

hi Atul,
how you goin mate? the new venture all ok?
I have put a 'flat transom'  on instead of one with a bottom edge curve and a forward slope towards the top,
I am thinking this will put the rudder and prop nearer the stern [very little] but should help with power and steerage ? its nearly 1/4 inch furthar foreward at the bottom so this may make a difference to the pull/push up/down on the stern at power changes?
time will tell.
Also still deciding whether to 'plank' it ......as per drawings......... or sheet cover it....... cheaper and 'possibly' more robust for a cheap build.
regards
don

don mate..tats a nice build...

everything's fine,thanks...sorry cant comment much on the build but sheet cover makes sense I guess...

city center and ali's burger's rule..If I can distinctly remember..

"Also still deciding whether to 'plank' it ......as per drawings......... or sheet cover it......"

That's EXACTLY where I have been floundering for the last 3 months. Superstructure almost complete, Hull Skeleton in place, Electrics acquired. Just need the guts to go ahead and start work on the hull.

Title: Re: Anteres cabin cruiser 2 - SCRATCH BUILD
Post by: sunk? on February 14, 2010, 06:33:43 PM
hi vc
sheet is cheaper and easier to waterproof..............less joins....
I found with mine the drawings for the 'frames' are something to be desired in acuracy.....once assembled there is not a very good line anywhere on the vessel.....thats cutting and sanding to the exact cut lines.......I find there is up to 2+mm  [-1/8in] deviation from a smooth line mainly at the bottom corner...bottom to sides... for the complete length so I will prob build this up with thin card layer.............put a cotton line from the bottom corner of transom to the bow following the bottom edge of sides and this will showup any wrongs befor you try to  'sheet' or 'plank' it.......
If you have a 2mm thick spar longenough this will show up any faults in the frames outer alignment for a smooth line.

don

Post by: VC on February 14, 2010, 06:51:53 PM
Don my friend,

The Hull Skeleton in my case has / had suffered from far larger imperfections and didn't need a cotton thread test to show up!  :giggle:I had thought of the same approach of rectification/repair, but used balsa scraps to rectify the chinks. Card would've certainly been a better idea, now that you say it.

Cheers!

VC

Title: Re: Anteres cabin cruiser 2 - SCRATCH BUILD
Post by: sunk? on February 14, 2010, 07:38:13 PM
hi vc.
nah if you got 'balsa' then that is easier to 'sand' back to 'proper' profil.
PHEW.......... for a while I thought it was me not being carefull enough..  :headscratch:........... but on checking the templates are 'out' somewhat.
prob due to being 'recopied' from  'copies' instead of a 'master' drawing.
after all this is a '40+year old' drawing hahaha :-)
I have a 180 motor and controler.......but..................what prop do 'you' propose to use ???
I was thinking flex shaft  ??? perhaps......no alignment probs then  ;D
regards don

 ;D
gettin old.............
Iwill be using an ex heli 4ch 2.4gig tx/rx/ its an esky one so it will be interesting to see if it suffers the same as spectum......... not too good for boats .. where as my futaba would be ok but................£70 for the rx.. :-\..... nah wont use that then........be more than the model..... :giggle:

does/did you 'stern bottom' have a slight hollow at the piont the shaft emerges  ??? and did you alter this or leave it........ ???

will you be going on the 'DIGHOLI PUKHURI' with your model? or is that not allowed  ???
looks a bit big!!!!!!

Ho Ho Ho! How did you get to know about Digholi Pukhuri????? :headscratch: Googled it or do you have some friends from Guwahati? I do most of my sailing there, as a matter of fact!

Digholi Pukhuri is a big place, enough for 500 Antares Cabin Cruisers! But seriously, how did you know about Digholi Pukhuri?

Cheers!

Well Done Mate!  {:)} {:)} {:)} The river, Brahmaputra, is fast at the best of times.  During the monsoons, he is furious! This pond / water body (Digholi Pukhuri) is just perfect for us modellers. I say "us" but afaik, there is only one boat modeller (that I know of) in the whole of Guwahati/Assam/North East India - and that is Me! Boo hoo hoo!

hi guys,
well getting a bit furthar.
I found the plans to be a little out on frame sizes...........but............. sorted that and now added some bracing spars to the bottom edge to enable me to 'sheet' this frame instead of 'planking' it'
see at the arrows in pic

Title: Re: Anteres cabin cruiser 2 - SCRATCH BUILD
Post by: sunk? on February 20, 2010, 05:45:31 PM

hi guys
just a note to say I have altered the plans once again...........1st time was to alter the transom.............
now I am adding gunnals to stop 'water ingress' at the lift-out cabin joint with deck.
Where I intend to use the model there are a lot of swans, so I want to be sure an upset swan will 'not swamp' the model if upset :-)
the liftout cabin will now be made to fit inside the gunnal.
:-)

hi guys,
just an update. I still need to get the sheeting for the hull but am progressing with the 'topside' :-)
this is not really an 'anteres ' now as I have deviated from the plans in a couple of places now :-0
progress to date
(http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/hh268/dondecap/anters.jpg)
and another view
(http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/hh268/dondecap/anters1.jpg)
must decide whether to put the windows in or just leave blank :-):-)
everything above deck level comes off in one piece just leaving the deck and gunnels. :-)

Title: Re: Anteres cabin cruiser 2 - SCRATCH BUILD
Post by: sunk? on March 02, 2010, 02:45:07 AM
hi guys,
well finaly sorted the drive out........................
I have a 380 can motor from an old heli along with the controler...no reverse.......... but I am using a 4ch tx, so may incorporate a 'reverse wireing switch' operated by a seperate servo to give reversed motor rotation........... just a thought for now.
this is all 7.4 volt running off a lipoly battery.
Ihave a small plastic tablet pot which the battery 'just' fits :-)..... and a plastic tub to house the rx and speed controler. the radio is 2.4gig................just a cheapy 'e-sky' one............ the rx are only £15 :-) the tx I also use for the small helis.:-)
so the running gear at the moment has cost '0', just the prop and shaft to get now and sort out a rudder.....the servo for this is also 'ex heli' :-)
pics to follow as soon as it is all ready to go into the hull.
regards
don

well guys,
this is the electrics for the cruiser.
the 'battery' pot is the white one and the black one is for the controler and rx :-)
both have 'snap on ' lids
also I now have the sheet for the hull.......... had to get 'light wieght ply' in the end
as I could not source any lime wood sheet localy.

still got the pprop and shaft to get yet.............not seen what he has at my 'local' model store store.

Title: Re: Anteres cabin cruiser 2 - SCRATCH BUILD
Post by: sunk? on March 05, 2010, 04:52:21 PM
hi huys
well due to my 'impatientce' I made hard work of this hull............
had the decking but no hull sheets..so........... put on the deck 'first'......then sheeted the 'sides' then the 'bottom'
all totaly in the wrong order :-)
it should have been....... for ease of work..........
bottom of hull, then the sides, then the decks, so my haste to complete actualy slowed me down.....'took longer' and made it a sight more difficult........especialy on such a 'small' model, on bigger models you can sometimes get away with this because it is 'big enough' to 'get at' :-) if I had put the 'bottom sheets' on first then the side/bottom sheets join would have been 'much easier' to bring together nicely!!
so any way here is the hull to date.........waiting for the second side to be put on ..then a spot of filling..minor' then a waterproof coat and a float test.............this will be next week now though...............was hoping for a float test this weekend >:(

hi guys,
well the hull is now complete to the deck..............I have to put a new forward deck on now as the only way to finish skinning the hull was to remove the forward deck :-( to get access to the prow for clamps.....

hi guys,
I used lightwieght ply for the hull sheeting..........managed to get a 'warped' sheet  :)..........
but even that was not realy good for the curves on this small hull. single layer  'lime' or such would be better as it is much more flexable, or possibly 1/8 balsa sheet but then you dont have the strength of multi sheet.

put the prop shaft in today and hope to prime the hull tomorow..............if I can persuade her to get me some..........[ got to promise to be good though :) ]
here is the running gear.

I am now looking at a 180 motor geared down 2:1 and will use AA as power because this will be going to my 4 yr old grandson and will be safer/ easier to use batts :)
I was going to use the gear in pic [was going to use a 380 motor]  but will not gear it down this far with the '180' ,
just a 'big' pinion on the shaft ;)
keeping the 380's for the MTB ;)

hi guys,
well .................. major setback yesterday and today....................................
primed and first coat the hull and cabin..................
the top coat enamel reacted against the supplied primer.......... so will have to clean off and start again.......:( :(
not good............definitely not happy.

I had the same experience and had to scrape and sand the entire mess out and begin all over again. Strangely, in my case, the bubbling happened at the exact same spot on the hull!

All the best...............

hi guys.
WELL...........................
I have finally finished this small cruiser......
pics below ,It is going to my grandson friday so hopefully I will have a video of his maiden with it.
it has a 170 motor and an old contoler from an esky coax heli and a servo for rudder with the toy 3 blade plastic prop and brass rudder shown earlier. the motor is direct drive using a plastic tube connector to prop shaft, running on 4AA batteries in the bow.

with this cheapy servo [acer lab 8gram] I get 45degrees of rudder in both directions.
the 35mhz areal is under the white tape on the inside of the gunwails.
On a 'roll test' I was able to submerge the edge of decks sideways roll and it 'popped back' upright again supper fast.   :)

Don, my friend, you will live long. Scarcely an hour ago, I was thinking about you. Hadn't  heard from you for a long time. The Cruiser looks bright! You've got one lucky grandson.

Hope you are doing well.

Best Regards,

VC

hi VC
yes I'm ok if I take it steady [how do you do that ?  ;) ]
hope you and your's are well also,
the paint was a nightmare................cheaper spray paints  are so badit was origionaly going to be blue and white. but the white did'nt like the supplied primer........the blue was ok.. so got yellow.............. this did'nt like the blue so ended up repainting the hull and then doing the decks yellow and not having a second color on the hull.
