Re: AVATAR - II
thanks Sreekant & Sahil.
The board is made of fiberglass (two piece molding) and came up nicely, no water leakage etc... the surfer is keeping / tilting to right on higher speed, need some counter weight to left and in the wind surfer the size of centre board has to be increased. will update the results soon.
the next couple of builds ( RC Kayak and RC Rowboat) are in progress......

Re: AVATAR - II
The mechanism of rowboat or kayak is very simple when the boat is steered with rudder, but without rudder both the mechanism gets complicated.
I have seen some youtube videos where the rowboat is controlled by 4 servos and programming, but I trying something simpler mechanism where oars can be synchronized automatically after disengaging any one of the oars ( I mean oars should hit the water at the same time after each successive turn)
And in the case of sailing the kayak the figurine should oscillate while kayaking and bends more while taking tune to the opposite side.

I am making couple of rowing mechanism. One with locking type mechanism and the second one where oars can be lifted out of water. This page was quite helpful building the 2nd one.

Re: AVATAR - II
that windsurf is amazing!
what will be even awesom-er is if you can build a sailboat or windsurf, where a weighted keel is not required. maybe a weighted figurine made, hooked up to a gyro, so the more the boat heels, the more the figure will lean outwards... tacking it will just get one step more challenging

Re: AVATAR - II
Thanks Sanjay bhai, Sreekant,
Fixing the mechanism inside the boat is also a big challenge
weight, size of the boat, waterline etc; all counts.
@Aniket
Even if you control the movement of the figurine by Gyro-Servo, the keel/centre board can't be eliminated.(Which transfers the wind force to forward motion) and in the case of Wind Surfer a moving Figurine will obstruct the movement of main sail.
This is nice animation of Sailboat:

Re: AVATAR - II
@sb maharana sir, the keel(or centerboard for windsurfs) is mainly there to direct the energy accumulated from the wind so the boat moves forward and doesn't drift. in a real windsurf, the boat heels, and the sailor hikes to counter the heeling. the weighted keel system is usually used for large yachts where a human cannot hike.
the downside of a weighted keel system is the inherent drag caused by the weight, and the extra weight itself. if instead one could setup a 180 deg servo, which swings a weight around, it can simulate the hiking system of a real boat, which would not only reduce the weight required, but also allow the boat to sail faster, and utilize the minute winds it collects in its sails better...
i dont know how feasible it is, but i think if possible, it will be a pretty solid system..
in the case of a windsurf, instead of a figurine, you put a swinging weight system at an angle. so the weight, at the end of the swing, will heel the board just enough to allow it to plane..

Re: AVATAR - II
So far so good, made a boat with sunboard, the size is 14x4.5 inch & weight is approx. 650 gms., (it should be around 450 gms.). Tested the boat, oars are quite ineffective. Planning to replace the geared motor with a lighter one and slightly modify the shape of the hull for a better positioning of the oars.

Re: AVATAR - II
Thank you Sirs.....
Due to overweight the boat is keeping too deep into water, and limiting the external length of the oars. The external length of oars should be 3 times bigger than the internal, which means the paddles should moves 3 times bigger than the internal mechanism. I have two options left (1) increase the height of the boat (2) reduce the weight so that waterline match the actual.

That is what I want to achieve. Instead of reducing the size of the crank, will keep the U camp at a higher level and get the bigger oar length.

Re-positioned the U camp at a higher point and extended the oars for a long arc. Oars are quite effective now and able to steer it nicely. Could not sail the boat with the figure, need little effort to fix it.

Re: AVATAR - II
Sanjay Bhai,
Actually the attempt is made to keep the hull clean and fix all the mechanism inside the figure as much as possible.
But the Germans keep things in a very simple and to the point manner. The rowing boat mechanism which I followed is Graupner Tina boat; I have tried my best to alter the some of the parts with various other methods, but could not. The only difference in my build is while turning, the arm is pushed away from the figure, where as in the original build it pulls inward.
If you remember the other build “red indian canoe” made by another German, took almost a week to understand the mechanism, previously I was thinking the paddling is just a circular motion mechanism but it is not like that. For example the rower sitting a right side of the canoe – left hand is for lifting and right hand for pulling the paddle and there is a delay in pulling action. That means the pulling action starts when the paddle is about to touch the water. And surprising both the connecting rods are on the same crank, at different angle, and placed so well that don’t come in contact while rotating.

Slightly modified the plan of the row boat, for more stability and traditional rowing boat look. Order a lighter geared motor from HK (100 gms, the previous one is 180 gms).

Thanks Sanjay Bhai. Planning for a wooden texture effect; learned the trick of wooden texture painting from a Steel Almirah Painter.
PVA is not Febicol, it is mainly used as releasing agent while making moulder from PoP, Cement Putty etc., but chemical properties of PVA is much like Febicol.

Re: AVATAR - II
I have already posted the the working of rowing mechanism here:
http://www.rcindia.org/boats/avatar-ii/msg144904/#msg144904
due to lack of space I have changed the servo position, place it on the front side.
will try to post some more images......

Painstaking work but what a FANTASTIC result! Awesome finishing and detailing - each and every nail on the boat has been replicated.

Re: AVATAR - II
Here the Crank performs two functions (1) reciprocating action at the main axle (2) swing action of the main axle.
The swing rod passes though a ball joint, fixed on a perforated strip which in turn controlled by a servo. By changing the position of the ball joint and the lower end of the axle it is possible to steer the boat as shown in the below figure.
