Title: First RC Hovercraft...!!
Post by: Adiboy on October 03, 2012, 01:46:01 AM
Greetings to all...!!

Here is my first hovercraft being made for a competition... I am not the participant but guiding my college juniors for it....!

MATERIALS USED:

1. Depron
2. Raincoat Material for Skirt
3. Balsa for mount

Electronics:
1. 1650 kv Turnigy Bell type motor    x 2 for lift and thrust
2. 30 Amp Blueseries ESC                 x 2
3. 3s 2200 mAh Battery
4. 4.5 x 4.5 prop for lift... and 5 x 5 prop for thrust...
5. 6 Channel Tx & Rx

It is still under the process and seriously need suggestions from the Senior & other experienced members in HC to guide me to improve the model's efficiency...!

I have 5 days for the competition and I can make any changes as guided...

Thankyou....!!

Nice hovercraft! Looks well built too! :) In my experience I have seen that if we have such a large area on the sides, the boat/hovercraft becomes very susceptible to crosswinds.. You may want to reduce that..

Hey,

Thanks a lot...

I will surely do the amendment and will post the pic...

BTW this hovercraft participated in IIT Pawai Zonals in Indore Today and stood outstandingly first....!! cash Prize 6k... and travelling expenses of the team from Indore to mumbai in January in the finals will be taken care of by IIT itself with boarding, lodgin,etc....

Will upload video soon...

PS: The craft is terribly fast...!!

Prop used in competition as a last moment change:

5 x 5 for lift and 7 x 4 for thrust...

Congrats..
I am too taking part in mumbai zonals..
Any video of your hovercraft or any competition video will be extremely helpful.
thanks.

Finally the videos....

MAIDEN

During the maiden I was careless enough to keep the receiver's Antennae untied. The breaking sound in the video is the damage to the shrink tubing of the receiver but somehow it was saved...

NICE SPEED

Track was very small for the competition 4 x 1 m...

Goodevening Everyone,

Now, I am making a modification on the Thrust Motor with the following EDF.

http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__8835__EDF68_with_2836kv_Motor_Heat_sink_Assembled.html (http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__8835__EDF68_with_2836kv_Motor_Heat_sink_Assembled.html)

The Lift Motor is same as before.

http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__18545__Turnigy_L2210_1650_Bell_Style_Motor_250w_.html (http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__18545__Turnigy_L2210_1650_Bell_Style_Motor_250w_.html)

Although I also have a Spare Motor for lift.

http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__14742__Turnigy_L3010C_1300kv_420w_.html (http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__14742__Turnigy_L3010C_1300kv_420w_.html)

I request all the senior members and members having hovercraft experience to suggest which motor is more suitable for lift among the above two....?

Also I am not getting any good ideas about the skirt. Please also guide me with that...! Plans for skirt are welcomed.

Thanks in Advance..!  :salute:

PS: This hovercraft is going to take part in IIT Mumbai Finals in the first week of january and I am desperate to win it...! (Well who's not..?)  ;)

Don't go for the edf. Instead use the spare motor you liisted for thrust. If you are keen about the edf, remove the duct. Or else you might find that your top speed has increased but your acceleration has gone down considerably.

hey adi.... very nice project....
i had a hovercraft project in my school days...... it was not as successful as its skirt was not designed well enough..... but surely if i were to suggest u... my craft had better maneuverability coz instead of using fins for control... i hav entire fan that rotated ......
big pro was ..... it cud turn round to giv a reverse function ... u might find it useful in deadend situations ....
if i were to suggest..... using edf for rotating fan wud be a great idea ... let me draw some plans for u

here r the plans.....
in case u decide to move on with this design ... take care to program the servo that turns EDF slowly .... coz i found that control was better with gradual change in direction....

hope u will be able to figure out how to make edf turn 360 degree.... with 180 degree servo

also one fault with this design was that the central mount became very tall so the craft was a bit unstable..... so u will need to make the base enough broad

Incase however if u dont plan a 360  turn...... EDF could  fit ur current motor place...

best luck

Thanks for the info everyone....

@Lastrites

I planned to use EDF after going through the following link:

http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__16606__HobbyKing_EDF_Hoverjet_Plug_and_Hover_.html (http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__16606__HobbyKing_EDF_Hoverjet_Plug_and_Hover_.html)

Please see the photographs of the rudder mechanism with the video in the Videos Section...

Also I am in an experimental phase... Currently will attach the rudder in this way shown in the above link's EDF. Then will switch over to the concept of mounting the EDF itself on the servo so that entire EDF is rotatory.

Talking about acceleration, this is the part I require the most.... High Acceleration is extremely necessary for the same... Is there any specific reason that I might not get enough with this EDF....?

I am open to changes and ready to make 10 more models if I need to.... My objective is high maneuverability and Acceleration... Top speed does not matter much due to the small arena of the competition...

@Sameer

I will call you for further info.... Your design is not exactly clear... have a few doubts... Also Thanks for the design...

Also need suggestion for skirt and best possible skirt material...!

Thanks in advance   :salute:

the EDf mounting was not directly on servo as i didnt have had 360 degree servo at that time....... but if u can arrange for the same... its the best option

what i did was added a shank wheel mechanism........ to convert an arch of motion .......into a circular one....
also.... even i read a article that edf systems that they do have a reduced acceln as compared to conventional props ..... but considering ur model weight ...... i think it wont be an issue...

abt skirt material ....... material u used is working fine..... maybe a still lighter material wud work best....
actually i am not able to make out that material from pics.....

but if u want to improve.......

we here in nagpur get what they call "parachute " material....... for custom made / tailoring raincoats.....very light material........

u might also think of adding a "nada" like v have in pyjamas..... so that it metains shape.....

Hey,

This material is indeed from Raincoat only...! That too outermost thin layer of the same... Its very light and not more than 30 grams at max....

Thrust=Acceleration. EDFs are very inefficient when it comes to thrust. You will get a lot more thrust from your bell motors as they can swing a much bigger prop. And please refrain from thrust vectoring(moving motor instead of rudder). It will complicate your design(read heavy and unreliable). If you want reversible go for the reversible car escs listed on hobbyking. If you want a more agile craft, position your rudders as far aft of the cg as possible. Keep it light and keep it simple.

One thing, how did you remove the back mount of the motor and screw it to the wood?

Well done on building your first hovercraft if you would like to ever build another one let me know and I will help you I have built 6 hovercraft from small like yours to rather large 1200mm long that go really fast
