Hi RC Buddies my name is Sergio Miranda from Bombay and need yur expert advice on building my rc catamaran.

I have just posted some pics of my new RC ESC and Brushless motor which I tend to run on 2 lipo 5400mah (11.1v) batteries and I am planning to use them for my diy built 4Ft long catamaran, can someone guide me on is the motor and esc will be OK for this boat I am also planning to build this boat with 3mm sunboard sheets once I come back from my hitch.

From my little experience, I say be careful with sunboard. It's really heavy. Your motor/ESC combo is suited for a high speed model. Sunboard will make it very heavy and the model will move sluggishly

A better bet would be balsa planking or lite-ply, followed by a coat of epoxy inside and out

Chris in Goa has built something similar using commercial ply  : http://www.rcindia.org/boats/my-new-52'-catamaran-rc-boat-diy/
http://www.rcindia.org/boats/my-new-42'-scratch-built-rc-boat/

I'd built in Sunboard - http://www.rcindia.org/boats/neptune-(scaled-up)-from-available-plans-in-sunboard/

http://www.rcindia.org/boats/110th-scale-baby-bootlegger/

Wasn't too happy with the weight

There are many brilliant builds here by SB Maharana and Roopesh Krishna, Krunal Gajjar. Have a look. Many other good builds too - it's just these names came to mind

Sunboard is much heavier at the same thickness, and not as strong.

Depron is light, but very weak. Better than Depron would be to use styrofoam (thermocol)

Hi Sergio, you should make one from Styrofoam..You get it from the packing of TV/Refrigrators. etc. Cut parts and make a hull out of it This hull can be solid since this will act as a master mould... Once done. You should get it fibreglassed from all sides leaving opening at the top.
Once the fibreglass dries out. you can pour some acetone into the hull that will eat away the stryofoam and leave a hollow fibreglass hull for you.

With a hollow hull, This motor will be good enough to race the boat... Also what is the prop that you intend to use.

Hi Sergio, 4ft long catamaran would be big for this motor. 30inc would be perfect and will have good speed too.
Try to make with 3mm plywood and balsa. Use plywood for main frame and balsa for skin. You can have a look on my build http://www.rcindia.org/boats/my-25(4cc)-nitro-catamaran-boat/

If you wish to make hull more strong. You may add single layer of 200gsm fiberglass clothe on balsa.

Just came from hobby sportz in Dubai and picked up the propeller, plz check if this the right prop for the boat.

Thank you Mr. Vai for the suggestion for the boat building material, will try to source it in dammam once I complete the mobilization.

Hi y'all

As per Mr. Vai this motor and esc will be small for the 4ft rc catamaran, can someone suggest a higher output motor, esc and battery for this kind of boat.

Hi
For 4ft rc catamaran you can go with DYNAMITE 56X87MM 1000KV 6- POLE size motor or similar.

8S lipo capable 160amps esc or similar. Make sure you get higher lipo cells handling esc which will provide required volts to brushless motor.

Nice hull

I recently build a catamaran. just over 4 feet in length, I am using twin brushless 3674 1600KV setup running on 6s each with 120A esc.

Sharing challenges I faced

1. With High KV setup you have, model needs to pick up plane (just prop and little bit of transom in contact with water) very quickly or you will burn your motor, or if you are running on just 2 cell boat will be slow.
2. with high RPM you might want to consider metal props, preferred CNC ones they do not require balancing.
3. in case of Twin motor setup, you have to run counter rotating props, which I failed to acquire, if available they are very expensive ~25$ for each prop. check out the torque roll in the video that i posted today.

http://www.rcindia.org/boats/project-planning-42'-catamaran-c5000-mystic

Now I have to wait for the props.
