Built in Brass

Hello Fellow Modelers,
Thought of showing off my efforts at scratch building a 1/50 scale Imperial Japanese Navy MTBD, these later grew in armament and size and came to be known just as "Destroyers".

As the photos quite vividly show there a lot to be done, its been over a month now, the boat is 76cm long. The MTBD turned out to be longer than my first scratch built project a Royal Navy Thornycroft Torpedo boat(seen in some of the photos), also in 1/50 scale.

The Thornycroft MTB has two 24v dc 5 pole PM 10000 rpm motors, a PLine 15A ESC, an FM RC & one of my sync. diesel sound units, all surplus items from my Garden Railway business.

As for the Japanese boat I intend to use a single smaller 12v dc pc motor & perhaps some other smaller & lighter ESC and no sound. There is very little room for dry cells, will have to use a NiMh pack.

Next step would be to sand and putty the hull using automobile putty & N.C Thinner, a rather messy job that I generally keep for Sundays!

Regards
Nilanjan Paul

Further progress on the IJN MTBD in 1/50 scale.

Unfortunately as is evident in the attached photos, I ruined the planked hull, once I had applied a coat of the N.C putty! The outcome was disastrous, a very rough surface with lumps and pits all over. Finally I have gone by VC's suggestion and applied the Cheat code... sent the hull off to the nearby automobile garage for a professional n.c putty finish.
At least the super structure is coming up better than the hull.

Regards
Nilanjan

The hull is back from the local garage, after they re-worked the n.c putty.
It still not upto the mark though, but much better than the mess I had handed them over a few days back.
Thanks for the cheat code VC

Work on the IJN MTBD in 1/50 scale has progressed further.
Housed the 12v 4400mAh NiCad battery pack earlier in the evening. Used epoxy to bind them to the bulkheads.
Soldered the wires in place and hooked the fuse holder & charging socket.
They were fixed on a 23swg brass shim, that would be screwed to lugs midship.
Also soldered suppresor capacitors to the terminals of the 12v dc pm motor.

Now need to look for an old dpdt slide switch in my odds n ends boxes, and an 12v ESC for brushed motors.
Regards
Nilanjan

Thank you.
Hopefully mid or late April, when most of the lakes in and around howrah begin their annual summer dry-up! Grin
