I remember having a lot of fun with these as a kid.  Just light them up and off they go !  We used to run them in large metal vessels used to feed the cattle at home, and they would go round and round !

Yes, I was very surprised at the age of 4 when I first see this and got from elder brother of my mother (called Mama in bengali but specific english ?). Similar trend continues when I gifted the same as and at same age to my sister's son. It is found just behind chandni chawck metro station in Kolkata (Madan Street Site i. e. south east gate). Also found at other places of kolkata. But the salesman is selling the same over 15 years at same place.

Also made similar boat with homeopathic 5ml bottle, cork cover, pipe made of scrap toothpaste tube, flattened by spoon and rounded over ball point refill, bend and the refill taken out. The pipe inserted from the cork cover and amaizing performance when it fixed on a wooden piece and heated with paraffin lamp of cold drink cap.

And moreover, they are made race (with my brothers boat) and race timing will depend on the candle flame length depending upon which the boat take rest (Soak water again into tank). You will be amaized by making this when you observe resting of the same.

Even i owed many such boats. There is no much increament in cost even. When i was in 3rd std, dad gave me first boat.I used to make paper boats and tie them behind put-put boat and boat used to run in bathroom tub.

But i stll wonder on what mechanism these work on.  :headscratch: :headscratch:
We fill the water in the pipes, which fills up the Putput tank. but when we heat the tank, why not all water just vaporises and gets off the pipe? why a cycle is formed? I am sure the secret behind "put-put" sound  and probably the working mechanism is the upper membrane of the tank.

A simple google search brought this up

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p-M9KUbxxfk

This is the method used to make most of the put-put boats but there are simpler ways to do it. I remember making one out of straws and an empty soft drink can when I was in school. Try it, it's fun :)

Anwar Sir, thanks for the nostalgic descriptions... :salute:
Kalyan, please share the idea once.. it will be helpful.. a great..
Rc buzz, thanks for the nice videos.. cool.. more ideas..
VC Sir, these boats are easily available in Chennai, and Mumbai as well.. and these boats are purely made in our Country, as the inside tin plate shows  a positive printout templates of a famous talcum powder.. of India.. so, means, the tin plate may be used to make talcum powder tins.. or these sheets may be used as a template for printing the labels over powder cans.. and waiting for the new design, is promised by the shop owner, is a little more big boat, and with a metal figure at the handle of the lamp holder.. what i am eagerly looking for..

Hello fellas,
45 minutes ago i stole some time and tried to make 1 put-puty boat for myself.
It took hardly 30 minutes to make one using aluminium sheet, a copper pipe and some POP.

(Please note that i am still a layman regarding the working theory)

I have lighted the flame but no responce since last 5 minutes. Still waiting.

The fuel is still burning and i m gonna keep it till the fuel burns.

That won't work! Consider the boiler to be a holding tank with a diaphragm on the top. As the steam exits the pipes the diaphragm is pulled down. When the steam has exited the pipes the diaphragm relaxes causing water to be sucked back into the boiler and the cycle repeats itself. In your design the steam will exit the pipes only once. As there is no way to get more water back into the boiler the engine won't work. I suggest you see the videos I have posted once more to understand the process before building your boat.

Checkout the entire series of the 3rd video I have posted above. You can make a put-put engine with an empty soda can, some straws and epoxy! Absolutely no soldering is required. All the best :D

Hi,
quick post of my boat picture, simulated. Use cork cover, not plastic cover.
Fill the tank with water before firing the lamp. Use two nail to keep the bottle in it's place by holding the bottle in it's neck. after some run, it will become empty and again suck water to it's tank. But 5-10 times suck will destroy the glass bottle due to thermal shock.Dont afraid, just replace the bottle.

Use some glue/epoxy at pipe, cork joint to make it leakproof. Even Fevicol Merine will serve the purpose.

I use the pipe made of empty toothpaste/cream tube and ball point refill. Bend the tube keeping the ball point pen refill inside the tube.

Hello all,

I know this is an old thread, but hoping to get some responses here.

I am looking for the putt putt-boat in Mumbai. Any leads on where can I find it in Mumbai?
From what I remember, these were not very expensive then. And I wonder what it would be now.

Also inform, if its available in other cities and can be ordered/ arranged via courier.

Thanks in advance.

Hi,
if u r saying  about the boat which works with candle light its called popup boat.
commonly it can't be seen now a days. At that time i had 2or 4 of them but ws not satisfied with the speed so i decided and made my own popup boat which was very very louder and speed was also good.
i made big boiler n used coal for combustion.

Hi,
My name is Aanish, we were living in Kerala 8years back. I lived there for 3 years. My dad often visited Sheveramali ( a pilgrim spot in Kerala) and when ever he was to go there, he use to buy me the same boat from there ( seen in the first post). I still remember the colour too it was pink on top and had a blue bottom. As a kid that time I use to love it. I would like to buy one now. Could any one tell me where In Bangalore it is available I would just love to have one right away.
Thank u.

@aanishp,
The last known source was VC on this forum, but he has been silent for over a year.
I got a few from him some years ago. Lying somewhere, will try to locate.
As far as i can recall, the propulsion system leaked. But you can fix that if you are keen.
I'm away till 20th. Remind me after 20th, and I'll try to send you one!
Regards.
