Title: make a simple crane for your crafts..
Post by: roopeshkrishna on February 04, 2012, 09:45:57 PM
Friends..there must not be anyone, who like to fix a working crane to his or her's craft..but all we know even a smaller working crane is very expensive..so, it is not feasible to sit up, like a cat sitting in front of a meat shop, with mouthful of water..so, turn to work table..its all easy..all we know, a basic 4 channel radio is far enough for ship and boat modeling, as we can use the two channels as throttle and steering, while other two can use to blow a horn, switch on a light or to control a thrust pump..but if it goes to a 6 channel, it will be even better..nowadays a 6 channel radio is far inexpensive than a mobile phone..but, usualy, two of our channels always kept free of use..so, its time to think about a simple but effective working crane..and it will be very interesting to see, while in operation at water..cool..and inspiring..

and now, all we know the micro servos are even inexpensive, so it is so inexpensive than a EP 30 gearbox..but works well..so, what we need here to make a working crane..?  only two micro servos, for scale from 1: 48, 1:35, 1:28,and 1:26th..but can use standard servos for bigger scale and heavier applications..here we are using the unsued two channels of our radio, or can use any channels up to us..and with a three channel we can also activate the hold mechanism..

so at first we can make a simple crane with two channels..

take two micro servos..any weight and any make..

attach a circular flange to one servo, while attach a star flange to another..

make sure the servos are good..we can also power up servos, but here it need not..

Friends...from here all istructions are based on my imaginatios..so you can add anything on your cranes, and in to any shape you desire..the shown roots are only a key..

now take a piece of foam board, in to 2 mm thick..place the servo, while leaving some space all around..mark it..

cut it out...neatly..
and check the servo is fit in hole..i have a humble request to you all..is to avoid glueing the servos with glues..will be a mess..

now attach a sharp pencil to compass..and draw two outer lines as the inner leaves the servo ears..

cut out the circle with sharp scissors..
make sure we have a margin all around...

measure the difference between the circular base and flange once..leave 1 mm from this reading..

attach a circle made of paper strip as shown..

now draw a circle in foam board, just greater than that of the base we added..
it is the base portion to glue to the servo flange later..

take ivory card paper, or thick chart paper, and laminate it in to two or three, or according to your desired thickness..can laminate it with diluted white glue..

the thickness of lamination all up to you..but make sure at least two sheets..
now draw outlines of the base of the crane..is only a key..can go in any shape..

cut the hole for servo, and make identical two..

place servo as shown..and not from back to in..

add a reinforcement attachment with same paper..this acts as a stopper, for servo..and holds the servo in place without a screw..

Well said Dharmik, however, he is NOT a robot.

He has an overdose of sentiments, passion and emotions. Hats off Roopesh!  :hatsoff:

I hope you will post a similar blog of converting a thermocole block into a hull. I am eagerly waiting to learn from you.

oh..VC Sir..its too inspiring..will add a good detailed log to make a hull from thermocol..i am too happy that i can see many boats and ships lurks in our forum all around...

Dharmik..how to laminate paper..?  here..buy ivory paper, used to make visiting cards, or thick chart paper..make one sheet in to 4 by cutting it..then dilute white glue..(i use Fevicol..a trusted brand to me from years..) in ratio of 50:50, means same quantity glue and same quantity water..mix it well..take a one inch brush and brush the glue on to one paper..place the second and squeez out any excess glue, and immedeatly place the paper under a plywood sheet with some bricks on it..can glue any number of sheets at a time..a 4 or 5 will gives us a super stiff structure..and such thickness can be used to make house models in an O guage.last for a lifetime..paint it..dry it...use it.. (:|~

Friends..i missed one thing to tell you..its not nesseary to connect a radio set, but this crane also can be opertaed by a servo controller circuit..so, can be used in our rail road dioramas..can make this circuit easily..with a NE 555 ic, or with CD 4020..will add the circuit..   (:|~
