I have started out with a new boat project.  
I bought 3 sheets of medium density thermocol for   100
I made the hull layer by layer...
6 layers of thermocol have been made into a crude shape of the hull. (precise shaping is pending and excess thermocol has to be removed)
I have cut the thermocol using a regular craft knife by heating it using a candle...This method is good if we use a cheap knife as the knife will remain of no use after cutting so much thermocol...

Its a big beast... 1 metre length, 30 cm width and 6 inches height.

The reason for this name for the boat is that I don't know what boat it will turn out to be  

I headed out with a goal of making a tugboat bt the shape of my boat's hull ended up more oblongated than a regular tugboat's hull...

The hull is in a crude shape right now...
The layers have not been joined together as of now...
I plan to stick them using fevicol marine...

Good going srinivas. How did you plan to sand the hull from outside?

First I will Glue all the parts of the hull and then I will refine the shape a bit with a craft knife heated with a candle... After I get That shape, I will apply Tissue paper with glue and water mix...After that NC Putty

Does the hull need any reinforcement?

Since you're using two motors, why do you need a rudder? Try differential steering. Also, make sure your ESCs are synced in.

I'll try that but for compact turns I will need rudder also won't I?

Yesterday, I joined the layers of thermocol together... Today, I will refine the hull shape...

Can you tell me how to hack the rx and make the elevator control to 2nd throttle?

Completed refining the shape... some relatives have come so I'll post pics afterwards...
I will start applying tissue paper after they go... probably half an hour later...

Tomorrow I'll make a place for the motors and will put two shafts...

Tissue paper has dried...I have applied 4 layers of tissue paper...atleast 2mm thick...I guess that would be enough...

Guys, now I need help in making propellers...

You are better off just buying the propellers. Why tissue paper on a boat?

To prevent NC putty from reacting with thermocol, also to prevent it from crumbling while applying putty...

What about stuffing tube...How to make a hole for it?

Which stuffing tube setting am I better of with? Red or Black?

My Take would be red.. Because the Black would make the Bow dip in the water...The red would reduce this dip.
In a fixed shaft ... the thrust point is the Motor mount.

I asked it because shaft angle must be shallow so, Ok Thanks I'll follow that...
Does any company sell NC putty less than 1 kg pack?

Salvaged 2 brushed motors from toys... will they work? I have to see...

Today I bought NC putty and thinner...
Putty Half kg costs 75 rupees...
NC Thinnner Half litre costs 65 rupees...
Flooring work going on in my house... Tomorrow also coaching class till 12:30...
After that I'll probably start putty job...

I have to ensure symmetry of both sides... any ideas for that?

Disaster has struck...
I applied putty to the thermocol hull which was covered with tissue paper...
The putty is eating away the thermocol...
Hull shape is ruined...
I am regretting the decision I made to do this type of a hull build...

Don't use tissue paper...use news paper ... It vl work.
Cover with news paper and apply favicol on It .. and let It dry.. and then apply putty..

First I tried using news paper... It was not even sticking to it...
I have wasted half kg of putty...
I have applied putty after 3 day of putting tissue paper...
Have you done any build in this manner with thermocol?

Yes had did these method that's why I am tell you..
First apply fevicol  on thermocol.. and yeah mixed some water with fevicol and make It dilute..
Then apply news paper on it ... And again apply fevicol on new paper...and thn keep It for drying.. and then apply putty on it.

I did the same thing with tissue...probably tissue paper is very porous

I am not disheartened... Again started with a smaller speedboat... 500mm length 200mm width
Option 1:
I guess I'll shape the boat hull and use it as a plug for fiberglassing (I'll get that done at a workshop) after coating it with Plaster of Paris and sanding it to perfect shape...

Option 2:
I will shape the hull and then apply resin directly on the hull without any fibreglass cloth...

First, its time to make the hull crude shape and then I'll sand it into shape...

I have doubt which always kept me away from making boat! The doubt is how will I increase the shaft of the motor, I have brushless motor ! And second is if I make a hole for the shaft then water will come in the hull then how does it work?? Help please!

The shaft does not directly go out of the hull. . It is the stuffing tube that goes out. . It is filled up with grease and the shaft rotates in the stuffing tube. The motor shaft is coupled to the prop shaft with a coupler

I've seen a jugaad at Chilika Lake in Orissa...

THe motor is not fixed... It is movable and the prop shaft is entirely above water...
No need for stuffing box...

The culprit for the hull being ruined was the thinner...
As soon as the thinner came into contact with thermocol, a vigourous reaction started between the acetone of the thinner and the styrene of the thermocol... The product was a sort of substance that felt like it was a chewed piece of chewing gum kept in a deep freezer...
It was and endothermic reaction with accompanied with decrease in volume... after a time of 20 seconds, the reactants and products came into chemical equilibrium...
Now what is K_c of the reaction???

I've been studying a lot of chemistry these days so it got stuck into my head...

Todays progress... afte half an hour of scolding for the mess I made...  

I have sanded the hull into precise shape...

Point of decision...
What should I do next?

Option 1: I have to make a plug and give it to fibreglass workshop for making a fibreglass hull... ( This can be done many a times if one hull goes wrong or if someone else also wants the same hull...)

Option 2: I have to apply fibreglass resin without fibreglass cloth directly on the thermocol hull...

Experts please give your opinion...

with your option 2, i guess the resin will eat ur termacol.

No it won't 

 Actually  it depends on what resin you will be  using.. I used an unbranded one available  in local  market  works fine... Just that it has a very  short  setting time  got to b quick

Just resin would be good enough.

The FG resin I get locally eats up Thermocol. What's your resin called, any specific name or application?

Polyester putty sticks to newspaper very well. Rough up the surface with a 300-400 grit sandpaper prior to putty coat, maybe?

I used less than 100g of putty for a 700mm DeepVee and a 550mm hydro combined and VC sir told me even that is too much, why did you want 1/2kg?  

 I tried to fill up the uneven surfaces...
It was a 1000 mm boat

It wan't polyester putty...
It was nitrocellulose putty...

It has undergone a big surgery involving a lot of sanding...It emerges out of the operation theatre(sanding place) like this

I have a nice, fiberglassable plug of this speed boat...
Will somebody take this and give me a fibreglassed hull in return, and the cost of fiberglassing will be given by me. This plug is re-usable so the person may make another hull for himself.

What is the plug made off ? And what is the weight?

It is as it is... thermocol... thats it...
weight is under 50-70 grams...never weighed it...

I haven't applied anything on the boat...
I just sealed off all the surfaces using a hairdryer...

The plug cannot be reused..although you can get it fibreglassed for once.

can't we use one fibreglassed hull to make a mold? by applying suitable mold release agents?

I destroyed the boat with NC Putty
I hadn't put enough tissue to prevent the Thinner from eating the thermocol.
After that, i Tried to get sunboard and build using that, but i spoilt the first model and didn't have enough sunboard left to continue the project. Then I moved to Bangalore for studies, and the project was lost.
