Recently I completed this project. It is bit different from rc simulators (virtual drive type), than to control a rc boat from wheel house arrangement. The wheel house replicates exact arrangement of a real boat, throttle action, forward & reverse gear, ship wheel etc and also a TV where the view from boat is transmitted though a camera.

The task is to make two wheelhouses
(1)   Powerline boat
(2)   Pilot boat

(1)   Working principle of Powerline boat:
This boat is fitted with two Propulsion units and it is fully steerable (360 degree). The shipwheel is calibrated as per the actual design, it has to be rotated three times (clockwise as well as anticlockwise)  to complete +180  and – 180 degree of the Prop. unit. And separate throttle controls for each engine.

(2)    Working principle of Pilot boat.
This is very conventional dual screw vessel (contra rotating). Both the engines can be reversed individually with forward & reverse gear. Individual throttle control for each engine. Throttle action upward only for both forward & reverse movements.  Shipwheel has to be rotated + (-) 3 times to get max. rudder angle.

Practice, and only Practice will make you perfect

If i may ask , When did you start the project, how long did you take to complete it, is it your original idea, or did some one help you with it ? whom have you made this for.. any organisation..?? did you build the wheel house or someone else built it for you. if you have built it for an organisation , do you have their permission to post these video and photos ??

Good Work though. Thumbs Up

Thanks Mr. Augustinev,

This project is no way link with RCI.
The Head of the organization (for whom I have worked) permitted me to share some of the pictures & video with certain rules & limitations. Although I completed the hull in Jan 2011, but able complete it in all respect after receiving the electronics on 2nd week of March. I stayed there for about 2 weeks to complete rest of the things (wheelhouse).

The rest you know better.

L'enfant Terrible du RCIndia

With all due respect and apologies,

The boat models represent the "Survey Boat" and " Ramp Powered Lighter - RPL" and not as mentioned (Pilot Boat and Powerline Boat) by the author. These boats are used by some Government of India bodies for Civil Defence and Anti Terrorist operations.

Every Flight is a test & every Crash is a Lesson.

super.
that is VERY creative....the idea of a real time simulator (not virtual) is a good concept.
Keep up the good work. Make PDF plans if possible Wink

Maharana Sir,
The two wheel arrangement seems to be a little bit tedious and confusing (to the boat driver). Why don't you try a joystick type system, i.e. two joysticks with throttle control attached.
(Just my suggestion)

Thanks Sanjay bhai, and also Samanth.
Anta- It is never easy to replicate a mechanical system with electronics. And the operating part - we find easy with remote and mariners with shipwheel.

Maharana Sir,
I didn't mean an electronic joystick system, just a mechanical system.
Also want to know how the mariners can know the position/direction of each Steerable Rudder Propeller unit; a must - while maneuvering through narrow channels and in close maneuvers?

An excellent work from you.  Salute

There is always an indicator positioned on the ship wheel hub. A half round gear and pinion arrangement which shows the exact position of the rudder.

and don't call me Sir yaar.

But the indicator, I doubt shows only 180 degree apart from 360.

You are right Anta, it is the standard one ( ship wheel to rudder - 3:1 ratio). For 360 degree the arrangement is quite simple; it is equipped with chain drive (5:1 ratio)
