Title: RC Submarine Akula-II
Post by: Sb_Maharana on August 07, 2011, 07:35:09 PM
Recently completed the hull, working on electronics, WTC, drive mechanisms etc. will post the updates as on progress. Studied some Akula submarines, and designed the plan as to suit my build.

Wow!! This has a league of its own!! What is the material ? how did you mold it ? Its amazing.

thanks Ujjwal, first I make the master piece with simul wood, then cover up with fiberglass, then seprating the glass hull from the master piece(Pattern). Now the glass hull is treated as die, where further glass hulls are made. It looks simple but a very tedious job.
Now a days I make everything fiberglass so as to preserve my hardwork in the form of die, and to make another piece easily if required.

@ Don Sir,
Not much progress. Got all the required electronics, accessories for it except the water pump.
Planing to complete the WTC this Saturday / Sunday. I was checking the size of WTC (posted the picture of the same). The drive system will have a reduction gear ration (3:1) and a seven blade properller. Yet to make the dive planes & rudders etc.

Yes Sir,
Cooling / heat sink is must inside WTC,
machined the water seal tube + driving shaft with 5 x 10 x 4 mm bearing.

hi mate.
this coming on nicely......... :)
will you use 'rubber' seal outside the bearing? or will the bearing be enough to keep water out at that depth?
regards

Yes will fix a rubber seal and a collar if required.

hi mate.
I was not sure if the pressure in the hull would be enough on it's own to stop water.........sounds like a good move :)

As long WTC is safe; submarine is safe... let us see how things are coming up.

I remember VC telling me long ago , akula was redesigned by Vc , as akula II , correct me if I am wrong,

Ps
Just curious , not taking sides at all

Yes, you are right. VC always wanted to build a submarine, Akula. He discussed a lot over phone and mailed me some photographs and sketches related to Akula. He designed a sketch of Akula which was 36” x 3”, and planned to make it with PVC pipe. I was not too convince with PVC pipe and that to 3” dia. I suggested him to go for 4” dia. Then he suggested me to start the build and WTC whatever way it is possible. Then I purchased a 72 MHz radio for the same purpose. Meanwhile he assigned me another work for which I couldn’t start the build for a long time. When I was in Kolkata I saw a RC Hydroplane (Gas powered) and it created a lot of interest in me to make an Atlas hydro. Thereafter when Roopesh started building one I searched in net. for submarine and found this, Akula II, INS Chakra.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Akula_class_submarine

Closely matched what VC and I were discussing as well as it is INS Chakra. And then I started making this one.

For boats Vc and roopesh have been inspiration on this forum for many, not discounting you and sunk?

Good to know so many boat builders here.

Previously I was thinking the Akula sub. have a 7 blade propeller, later I found it 6.
First I made the design with 40mm dia, but looked too small, then increased the dia to 45mm.

Don Sir,
I just forgot the joint nuts,,, :headscratch:
and last week I damaged the 7ch receiver for which I am limited to the basic functions with a spare 4 ch. rx.
Yet to balance it perfectly and you can see the gyrational force twisting the hull in opp. direction.

Title: Re: RC Submarine Akula-II
Post by: sunk? on September 11, 2011, 12:15:22 AM
hi mate.
yes the force of the motor starting.
is there not a start mode on the esc? like soft start super soft start etc like on helis?
if not can you program a softer degree of start in the tx....like a throttle curve?
it seems ok once the motor is running just a severely  quick start up.

regards
don

Title: Re: RC Submarine Akula-II
Post by: Sb_Maharana on September 11, 2011, 10:26:30 AM
Sir,
Soft start is one reason,
but on the other hand, I did not feel the importance of the "Fins" at the lower hull.
On a scale ratio it has to be around 4 ~ 5 cm but I made those quite smaller in size.

Title: Re: RC Submarine Akula-II
Post by: sunk? on September 11, 2011, 01:13:06 PM
hi mate ,
perhaps try a temp add-on extension   [perhaps stiff card with tape]  and see if that cures or helps first.

don

Sir,
I want to slightly over weight the port side to compensate the unwanted torque by the motor. The finishing part is on. working the details.... forgot to have a Periscope  :o, and yet to screen print the water level marks and hatch lines.

Title: Re: RC Submarine Akula-II
Post by: Rooster on September 13, 2011, 02:52:50 PM
Maharana.. You continue to awe me with each of your new models and variations in build. Off all the  builds for water two builds that I find most complex is the Submarine and a row boat.
With all the boat builds already with you I am sure the Submarine will be new bench mark for fellow boat builders.

Would be interesting to have a working periscope on this submarine… maybe with a camera.

The finishing is near real.. Awesome let the updates flow.  {:)}

Many many thanks Don Sir :salute:, and Sreekant  :salute: :salute:, thanks a ton for the very encouraging comment, I was little frustrated making this submarine, when I damaged the 7ch Rx, I lost all my hopes bringing it to live. I have tested the sub. in the near by  pond (one of my favorite pond) the result is awesome, though I have limited with a 4 ch. the performance is quite satisfactory. No water leaking issue inside the WTC, so I can fine tune the sub. once I have the higher channel Rx. Will update the progress soon.

The boat is awesome.... Hats off for a great build.

BTW, since I am not a boat person, pardon me for asking a silly question. why a sub? does it go underwater? if yes, then how does one control? I mean a heli, plane, car or a boat is always in our line of sight. Is it the same with a sub?

Title: Re: RC Submarine Akula-II
Post by: Sb_Maharana on September 16, 2011, 09:38:25 PM
Thanks Pankaj,

The concept of Submarine is very well explained by VC in this thread:
http://www.rcindia.org/chatter-zone/rc-submarine/msg9694/#msg9694

And this first time I am using a 4Ch remote, I mean operating all the channels simultaneously and found great difficulties handling it and now I realize how difficult it is to fly a rc plane. Here I did not attempt to submerge the sub. deep into water but just kept slightly below the water surface.  Swimming pool (clear water view) is the right choice to get nice visibility and sail it correctly. Unfortunately we don’t have a swimming pool in our town.  :giggle:

Yes Sreekant, I am looking forward to fix a onboard camera.  :salute:
and I never accumulate enough interest in building similar boats again and again, but in this case I think one more build is still required to make an advanced rc sub.

Today my youtube channel (RC boats & ships) has crossed 1 lakh views. The first year I got only 20 thousand views but in the 2nd year it is almost 80 thousand. I am getting enough views from India, and it only due to our beloved forum members. Thanks ….   :salute: :salute: :salute:

There are as many as rc / model boat makers are here in our forum, like Roopesh, VC, Sreekant, Sanjay, Ghanshyam, Akash, Ved, Amit & Don Sir (UK), all are expert in this field / hobby. It will be nice of you if you contact and take everyone's view and publish a nice article on rc boats and promote this hobby in India.

It would be best to list RC India usernames, since the information is sought by a newcomer to the forum.  For example, "Don Sir (UK)" would be "sunk?" on RC India.
