i am converting my 1/10th scale car frm nitro to electric. i hv a motor of 3300kV and also an ESC. bt nw i m nt getting how to couple to shaft of the motor with the center differentail gear. i hv 2 options

1st. bt using a pinion gear
2nd using a clutch bell to motor shaft.

nw if i use a clutch i wont be able to use brake frm motor. and if i use a pinion the motor wont move freely during OFF condition. so bst is by using a clutch.

" Nw i m searcing for a clutch for my brushless motor. bt i am nt getting it. hope u all will help meto get that ."

I believe some conversion kits for hong nor cars are available.
BTW i know clutch exist for big motors,i remember seeing something where a guy made a go-kart with huge turnigy BL motors (x4) and used a clutch to prevent them from blowing off,but clutch for small motor was a new thing. Can u post a link or something or maybe write a few words about it. I am interested in this thing.

Please explain why the motor won't move freely during off condition if a pinion gear is used Smiley

Only problem i could think is that may be the pinion is not big enough to reach the spur..but in that case motor would be too free to move...

I have converted and built a lot of electric cars in the past. Most of them 1:8 buggies. I have used pinion as well as the tekno setups. To be truthful the complete tekno conversion kits are just super awesome.
As u mentioned earlier, u have two choices, the direct drive through the pinion or the clutch system.
Direct drive is good but it does add a lot extra burden on the motor as the motor is used for breaking as well.
I personally love the tekno elektri-clutch system.
The pros: Nitro type feel in throttle. Motor stays cooler.
Cons: U have to have an additional servo for breaking. U cannot use reverse which people generally enjoy using in an electric.

Incase u go the elekti clutch way. the required parts are available on amain and towerhobbies.
The tekno system uses the existing clutch shoes and clutch bell. Tekno has come out with an option called traktion drive: uses the same clutch system but different type of clutch springs. In this kind of setup the clutch shoes are always engaged with the bell and incase u give a hard throttle punch the springs act like a deterent and slip so that u avoid loosing traktion. I had tried this setup also, but didnt enjoy it in our track conditions as we here have loose soil and the cars are always loosing traktion.
Try the elkti clutch. Incase u need the springs for the traktion drive settings i can provide them to u for free as they are lying with me without any use.

"cleared for takeoff"

Hi,
I need help in converting an old HPI Nitro Rush 2wd stadium truck with a .15 ic engine to electric. Have absolute no idea how to.
Do i need to attach a BL motor directly to the transmission ? How will it fit? What esc and motor kv specs are required? Its main spur gear is stripped of its teeth, will i need it? etc. These might be stupid questions to ask..But more importantly, will it PERFORM like a nitro powered car as it used to be ?

Would really appreciate any kind of info on this issue.

rgds,

Can we have some pictures?

It's pretty easy to convert a 4wd vehicle to electric.

I haven't heard of many 2wd conversions.

You will need a battery tray, a place to mount your ESC securely and most importantly, a motor mount.

It will be popping wheelies like there's no tomorrow once you're done with the conversion. Grin

Thanx guys,
Placing batt and esc can be taken care of easily, but the main issue is how to install/match  the BL motor with the tranny. Should the clutch bell & spur gear remain, or no?
If anybody has done this..please post some close-ups so that i get atleast some idea.

I haven't done a conversion but have a basic idea of what needs to be done.

You'll need a pinion the motor and a new spur. A clutch bell would be a PITA. What is the weight of the car? IMO, the motor mount will be the hardest part.

It looks like you'll need to make a motor mount and use it but it won't be very good in a mid motor configuration on loose dirt.

Most 2wd cars have the motor at the back of the car where it powers a transmission.

On yours, the motor will sit on the chassis. It might be kinda hard to do...

EDIT: Someone seems to have done the same thing I mentioned. He has a motor mounting plate that attaches to the transmission. The motor drives a spur which goes through other transmission gears and finally powers the rear differential.

So in other words, all that needs to be done is somehow mount a Bl motor in such a way that it drives the existing spur gear..is it?

Yup.

Weight distribution will be pretty weird. I believe you'll need to add some weight at the rear to give the tires any chance to gain traction.

The motor mounting plate should be anchored well and not move about resulting in a change of gear mesh. If you achieve that, I think you'll be able to pull the conversion off. A very short Google search didn't show any conversion kits. You will need to fabricate a mount yourself. Just to give you an idea, here are some pictures of 2wd vehicles.

Typical rear motor config.

One of the few cars out there which allow a mid motor configuration.

Hmm, lots of brands have come up since i purchased my HPI way back in 98'. There were few well known brands like HPI, Traxxas, Team Assosiated, Team losi. Wanted to buy the T-Max (launched prior to E-Max), only 4x4 monster truck with a reverse mode back then...but couldnt afford it Sad

If you're looking into an MT, I wouldn't suggest the T-Maxx or E-Maxx. For an electric monster truck, the Thunder Tigert MT4G3 does a VERY good job. If you've got more dough, the Traxxas E Revo Brushless Edition is the bomb.

It's a good one. The servos need some care but apart from that, it's a great car. And yes, it is available here. It won't do the fast stuff without a power system upgrade but it it a unique vehicle that can take on some really harsh terrain.
