Title: Going to begin RC as a hobby, beginner help in buying an electric MT?
Post by: Graunlar on January 14, 2012, 10:13:58 PM
Hello guys
I have read the beginner forums and the stuff has helped me a lot,but i need some specific help which i couldn't get even after 'searching' the forums.

I have decided to buy an electric monster truck, bashing, racing will be next to negligible, just for fun maybe

I am on a tight budget(as i dont earn as of yet,and its gonna be my parents financing me),and have been looking at the Traxxas Stampede 4x4
I really like it, but i would want you guys to please make me aware of my other options?
I have talked to 2 people about buying it,both belong to this forum,i believe, and both have quoted a price around 27 thousand.
Thats the max i want to go,so some other options in the same price range?
And also,i have been reading that many people here get their trucks shipped from Towerhobbies and other shops in the USA,is that cheaper? Is it convenient?

Thanks a lot!

:)

Well, having it shipped from the USA will be a pain in the 'rear'. It would be better to buy it in India.

Now, the Stampede 4x4. It's based off the Slash 4x4 with just a shorter chassis, bigger tires and a wheelie bar. It is a great vehicle and a good basher. The slash itself is a good basher and the stampede will do better. Do keep in mind that the stampede won't do very well on track due to its design. It was never meant to race and it won't do it very well. But when it comes to bashing, it's a whole new story. The stampede will make a for a great basher. It's quite durable as well. Just a small problem with it. The center driveshaft exits the chassis in the front and dirt will get in and kill the motor mount bearing. You need to seal the channel and make sure no dirt gets in there. Regular maintenance will take care of that problem. Take care of the bearings as well.

My advice? Go for it. :)

I have the slash 4x4 which is the Stampede's SC cousin. Go ahead with the Stampede 4x4. You'll love it.

Btw, welcome to RC India. :)

The house is going to be pretty small when you see the size of the Stampede and the speeds it can achieve. You will enjoy it in an open area.

by 'around the house',i meant around the house, outside,in the park and stuff :p

By the way, any other options, from any other brands?Maybe something from HPI?

At that price point? I'm afraid not.  I wouldn't suggest the XS Flux because of many problems it has had. The HPI dealer I asked said that the new versions had the problems solved but I haven't heard more from him. The HPI will be faster but I'm not sure it should be your first car. The Stampede is very easy to work on.

If you have some friend who is not new to nitro engines, i suggest get a MTA4, its bigger tougher and nitro, and comes well in your budget, you could have got a tmaxx also but sadly prices have come up...
Stampede is a good truck too, unless you dont mind your wheels spining w/o grip most of the time, that beacuse its very light, and very very fast..

One more suggestion i have for you is a slash 4x4, ask 'iamahuman' about it, he's got a really nice one.

@traxxas1, i dont want to get into nitros, i hear too much maintenance and plus, every time i run it, there will be a voice in my head going 'the fuel, the fuel, the fuel' :/
Im sure about electric
i dont really like the slash,i want a monster truck :p
apart from the grip thing with the stampede, anything else i should worry about?

thank you

You don't have to worry about the traction. The stockers will provide decent traction on tarmac and allow you slide around in dirt. If you want more grip, get some different tires.

Like I said, you have to take care of the motor mount bearing. The best way to do it is to buy some brake cleaner fluid( non- chlorinated) and some 3 in 1 oil. Pop the seals, hit them with the brake cleaner fluid and put a drop of 3 in 1 oil inside the bearing and you're good to go.

Don't do too much research, you are getting your first car. Get something that you like. Import option is difficult unless you know the process well. It can be frustrating for the first time. Check price locally. If delta is not too high, buy locally.

One thing, its horribly fast,so dont bang it on a pole..lol
Its a great car, though some people dont like its 'a little unusual look',but if it looks good to you go for it, its perfect for you.
Its easy to maintain, fast enough, ready to run, comes with everythign, tough and a good basher,Everything that you want.
