Heheh!  Giggle

Not Really! It's my own mutant SC18 modded for the street!

http://s974.photobucket.com/albums/ae229/KarlMatsunaga/new%20sc18%20street%20blaster/

You'll notice the drift box. While some will accuse me of cheating, the box works really well, to keep the little SC18 from spinning out at speed. When the wheels are swapped out for drift-specific wheels, it works for that, too!   Thumbs Up

The rear diff is filled with 150,000 wt diff oil, to help with drift. It still works for "grip" driving, too!

With the Castle system installed, it rips! Not sure of it's top speed, but it is definitely faster than 45 MPH, which is the top speed of one of my older 18R's!

The body is an RJ Speed "Stinger" body for the SC18, modded for the street. I cut out the fake roll cage, and attached a flat piece of lexan painted to the corresponding colors, and attached a cut-down wing from HPI, all of it mounted in the bed area. The front end was not cut out, to facilitate the air dam, so it would, by aerodynamics, be "sucked" to the road surface. It works!  Thumbs Up

May need to find stickier tires, as the stock 18R ones are definitely overpowered by this chassis. Still, I'm glad I did it, as it definitely screams!

All I can say is   Shocked  I love the body!
So much for the Traxxas "Rally" VXL!

So the D-box is simply like a Gyro, right? I've seen them use it in a Baja before for the same reason..

The first thought I came into this with was,"Must be re-branded"like everyone else is.But what a pleasant surprise.

Beautiful looking car.Must be mean on a track.I didn't check but which castle system do you have in it?

On the body, could you give some pictures and more details on how you got the air dam.I've been wanting to try something for my slash. The reason I am avoiding the 'backslash' conversion is that it will have an open wheel configuration.(I might change it later). Also,I've got a guy on rcgroups who wants to put a fan in his car to get the desired ground effect. Can I send this link to the guy?(I know air dams and ground effects are different but looking at the bigger picture,it will be a good aerodynamic change.

And Divyam,as you rightly said, the D-box is a gyro with HPI D-Box written on it.(no offence to gokemidoro)
It basically aids handling but I have read that they do not survive on off-road cars due to the vibrations.

Divyam,

Yah, the gyro is the same as a heli gyro, same basic principle, but applied to cars. Works really well for minis (I don't recommend them for 1/10th scale, as 1/10th is big enough to drift without them), since minis tend to spin out much easier than larger scale cars with a lot less effort, making them perfect candidates for the gyro.

Iamahuman,

There was an article in Extreme RC Cars Magazine here, in the states, where they did a project, using the Traxxas 4WD slash as a test bed for speed runs. The body they used was a Protoform PF8-GT body for aerodynamics. They didn't cut out the wheel wells, and using a Castle Mamba Monster system and 4S LiPo, went 80.02 MPH! With stock tires!
The slipper almost melted, and the chassis had to be weighted down with approx. 12.5 oz. of lead weight on the front end, and another 5 oz. to the right side of the chassis to combat torque twist.

They're talking about going to 6S liPo, to crack 100MPH. Crazy!!  I'll take a few pics of the article and post them, so you can see what it is like. They don't have an online service for the content, so pics of the mag are all I can offer, but if you can magnify, you may get the gist of the article.

Heheh! Found out today that I need stickier tires, because the 18R rubber ones aren't good enough for street running. For a while there, I was actually drifting with the rubber tires!  BTW, I am using a Castle Sidewinder Micro with an 8000Kv motor.

I wish I could post vids, but I don't possess a videocam. Sorry.

I DID, however, take pics of the article, and it came out well enough to read, so here it is:

http://s974.photobucket.com/albums/ae229/KarlMatsunaga/speed%20slash%20article/

The last two pages are sideways, that is the only way I could get it large enough to read, but it is the article in it's entirety.

Have fun! Grin

Could you upload pictures with more lighting or an even higher definition? After zooming, they seem hard to read.

O.K., dude, here's better pics (I hope).

http://s974.photobucket.com/albums/ae229/KarlMatsunaga/speed%20slash%20article%202/

I checked them, they should be easier to read. Sorry about the one upside-down page, came out that way, I don't know why. They were all uploaded the same direction.

Let me know what you think. It's really interesting, though I am not into all-out speed cars anymore, modding something to do what it was not designed to do is fun!

Maybe that's why I do it!  Giggle

Egypt? You got me there, I haven't the foggiest, except from what we get here, they want to be free of Mubarak. Dictators, man, they're a drag.  Always want s**t their way all the time!  Bang Head

Yah, I checked Youtube, for "speed slash", and got one, but he was using KPH, not MPH, though the vid title says MPH. To get to 80 MPH, the Slash has to be geared really high, and the power system has to be able to take 4-6S LiPos. Castle's Mamba Monster is the only system I know that will take that abuse, and is rated that high. The slash in the vid was using a smaller system. 113 KPH is respectable, but no land speed record.

I was using minis for that kind of speed, like Tony Phalen. He held the land speed record for RC until a couple of years ago. The car was an Associated 18B. I think his record was in the 110's in MPH. In one pass, the car actually got airborn! I think there's a Youtube vid on that. I saw the car close-up, and it was a surprise! Not very highly modded, just a plain old 18B with a carpet racer body, and a lot of weight attached to the front end. The motor was a one-off Brushless, but the chassis was essentially stock!

yah, Egypt is in real turmoil. Mubarak was/is financed by the US, and he hasn't done much for the country, or his people. In fact, the whole Middle East is in turmoil. Tunisia just went through something like what Egypt is going through now, and the situation in the region is not good, apparently.

Well, it was only a matter of time, since the west is not doing well, financially, either. Greed, man, you would think people would learn.

It would be awesome to see the slash break the 100 mph mark.On a related note,AE is trying to get a car to 200 mph.I think they got to 160 mph. They call it the 'road to 200'.But its a totally one off car.

I'll check up on the Tony Phalen video.

I remember seeing a video of a TC3 breaking 100 mph and getting airborne and one more video where a car crashed at a speed near 100 mph.

Yah, I've seen a lot of one-offs for speed. Very interesting, all hand-made in machine shop. It's the minis that are intriguiging. most (up to now) have been made from stock models. It's why I got into speed car minis in the first place, easy to obtain, and relatively inexpensive. For electrics though, power systems are the great limiter, as motors only go so high, and pinions that small are not generally available in the tooth counts needed to go "supersonic."

Heheh! What was left of that car that crashed trying to crack 100 MPH? Not much, I expect! Giggle

I don't know if Tony still works for Associated, as he was the one to go to, for speed cars.

Yah, air dams with the rear cutout works really well to keep the car generally planted at speed, but for the higher speeds, weight is definitely required. It's no trouble to get the rear end to stay down, but the front, if not weighted enough, will tend to want to lift off.

Well, as you probably have seen at another thread, I'm giving consideration to the Traxxas rally, and mod it to drift properly! I got into an argument with a guy here, about the rally, and had to show him just how easy it is to drift a 1/10th scale drifter, after struggling with the rally.    Bang Head  He's now convinced.  Thumbs Up
The traxxas rally is still considered a "mini", so I will see what I can do to it, to make it do what it was advertised to do, which it CAN'T do, out-of-the-box.  Giggle

I guess tires should do the trick?

The rally is a fun car.But I don't think it can the dethrone the mini e revo vxl.

You're right, it won't.

Traxxas created the rally for the Gymkhana devotees, but it's execution was badly thought out. The Revo-style chassis is excellent as the Revo, Slash and Summit, but needs modifications they didn't do, as the rally.
Traxxas has had a few bombs in the past-cars with no real purpose. The Nitro Sport, Jato, The supposedly dual-purpose Summit that doesn't do either thing well. At least the mini Summit is single-speed, and seems to do well as a monster truck.

The rally has another defect. It's almost what's called "oversquare." Cars are stable when their wheelbase is longer than their track width. When the wheelbase gets closer to the track width, the car becomes more unstable, and driving it is an exercise in trying to keep the front and rear ends from swapping. It's really bad, if the car is 2WD. In 4WD, it doesn't show itself as much, but the car is difficult to drive in turns. More so than a longer chassis.

The last defect is in the design of the chassis. Traxxas uses IFS front and rear. The rear suspension should be standard upright shock design, and the bottom of the chassis acts like a wing, but doesn't create downforce, but a certain amount of uplift. That's O.K. as a monster truck, but really bad for a rally car.

No, the Mini Revo and Slash are secure. Thumbs Up

Oh yeah.Someone should come up with a custom rally chassis in CF and that would be great.Would love to see what your rally turns out to do.

Thought about that, and while looks don't really have much sway in my choices, the KB version would look the part, and that is the model I will get.
