Title: My Big Daddy - HPI Baja 5B SS build
Post by: mail4ajo on October 11, 2009, 03:39:01 PM
I had eyes on the HPI baja from the day I started in RC. But the initial cost and lack of experience set me off.

I closely learned as much I could on the Baja family and gasoline rc in general. I first wanted to go for the newly released RTR version. Checked the prices in India, insane is all I can say - 100% increase from the US retail price. I decided Indian one is not for me and try the import route.

On Saturday after a 3 month wait, my dream came true. But only the kit version could be brought. The RTR version is just too big a package. My RC guru gave me immense confidence and I took the plunge. He was with me all along and completely took over the critical components like differential, engine mounting etc.

Some images from the build is attached. Not fully done, Have to do the shocks, tyres, body painting and final setup and trim. This is all we could manage in 12 hours.

Will update with final pics soon.

Congrats... Great to see a car build  {:)}

I saw a similar one at RC Dhamaka.  It is not the HPI Baja, but looks like one, probably from China.  Looked pretty sturdy, wonder if RC Dhamaka folks have any comments.

I assume it is the King Motors Baja which is a clone of the Baja. The HPI Baja revolutionized the 1/5 scale Gasoline car scene, hence many clones are being made. The HPI Baja itself is based on the legendary desert buggies, Kyosho Ultima/Cox Scorpion who share the same father, Akira Kogowa.

Clones are a very hot topic in most large scale forums. The rumour that clones are exactly same as the HPI Baja is untrue. Users who have stripped the clones to the nut have confirmed that. I believe you get what you pay for.

Ordered some accessories from DDM (Daves Discount Motors) like Outerwears for the air filter and pullstart, HPI 3000 mAH receiver batteries and few spare spark plugs etc.

Need to break-in this week. Will 1-2 tanks at max half throttle be good enough break-in time for a 26cc gasoline engine?

good choice building the SS. What Radio are you using?

DDM is the best for aftermarket parts and even baja parts. make sure you get some hostile tyres and inserts as well for best performance

I am using the RTR FM radio, I loaned from Mura. I am planning to upgrade to either the Futaba 3PM-X 2.4 or the Sanwa MX-3 2.4 very soon. Some one suggested the Futaba 2PL 2.4. Looks very basic and if I need to upgrade my transmitter to a FASST system later, need to replace the 2PL receiver with FASST receiver.

Any thoughts/feedback. What radio are your using?

Was planning to get the Proline Badlands when the OE ones rip. Heard good feedback on the Hostile ones as well.

Hey, thats a 1.7 year old thread. Baja has been build and rebuild 2 times. It ran 3 races also and had one win in last RCINC. Not touched it in 4 months. Need to repair some stuff and get my new Proline Desert Rat body and under body painted.

I think the India prices are somewhat decent now. Check with Tritech.

Man, customs duty is also there, plus its full of hassle to get such a huge box out from Customs

Tower gives discounts for international shipping. Check it out. Customs will certainly be incurred, no escaping that.

Thats what i am saying Rs52,000 from tower Hobbies and Rs65,000 here from hpi Dealer and you are not adding 5/8thousand customs on 52k. I'll say makes it sense buying it here. And save all the trouble of going through Customs.

Baja 5bss from my tower account is costng $950 i.e. INR 43,000/-

Why are you guys getting 52000...??

In this case, even 20% customs will total the car for 52k all inclusive.
