[EDIT] Moved to the right board.

Depends on what motor and remote... there are toy ones and real RC car ones.  In any case, car radios have too few channels for plane use.  It works the other way though, you can use a plane radio for cars.

Planes don't need backward.  They need throttle, elevator, and one of either rudder or elevator (as a minimum).  Can't see how cars, which typically only need 2 channels, be used for airplanes (unless you take a lot of effort to make a twin motor plane that runs via variable thrust and throttle alone is used for elevator function also).  Remember that "forward and backward" is the same channel, it is the ESC on the throttle channel that does it.

Search the forum, you will see this being discussed already :

3-ch rc radios are now in use and 2 channel are out because 2.4ghz are preffarably 3-ch, so you do can use a car radio+reciever,
not sure about the motor and esc<beacause performance requirement of a car and plane are variably different>

But the 3rd channel is usually a switch... Don't see how it can be used as a channel in a plane as it only has ON/OFF...
(don't know how to explain it, probably the plane guys can help you here)

when u buy a reciever , you can decide how many channel to use, ther is a  setup process that decides which channel performs which function, ther you can reset settings acc. to your requirements. this setup process can be easily obtained from your manual

I think ESC Works on single channel and there is nothing like deciding in esc "which channel performs which function".

I hope you are referring the receiver.
