Title: Traxxas E-Maxx Brushless
Post by: ajit4647 on April 02, 2011, 10:00:57 PM
Hey guys.

Recieved my new E-Maxx Brushless today from Mr.Jayanth of RC Throttle Bangalore. A very positive buying experience. Would recommend his shop to anyone in a heartbeat.

Got a set of 2S 6000 Mah Lipo's as well on Mr Jayanth's advice.

The box came extra well packed without any damage whatsoever. Was too excited to take any unboxing vids or pictures.

But here a few Pics. Videos will follow in a day or 2.

2x3s is supposed to be MONSTROUS! As in uncontrollable, part shattering, driveline wrecking MONSTROUS!

HAve Fun~!

What is the brand of the battery you brought?

I dont suggest anything more than 4S on this car. You will be stripping diffs and tyres and makes the car uncontrollable.

By the mah rating,I would think its one of the Tritech lipos. If Jayanth got them for him,I'm pretty sure these are the ones.

Spot on iamahuman. They are tritech 2s 6000 mah 35c lipos.

And took the truck out for the first time today. Let me just say performance with the Included Nimh batteries is good. Can pop wheelies and it's pretty controllable.

With the LiPos it's a whole new experience.  Wheelies on demand. During a run. Not just standstill. And it's really really fast. Almost popped a standing backflip. Landed on the front bumper. A bit more and it would have landed on the tires.

One small problem the stock shell gets scratched very easily. Scratched it pretty bad when I had to do some really hard braking to avoid hitting a friend who stepped in way. Truck did a front flip onto it's roof and slid a few feet :(

As for videos will put up a few in the next 2 days.

With the stock batteries itself its so fast and pulls off wheelies easily, wonder how it'll be once you use lipo's  :)

Your batt. are way much expensive, you could have got dynamites, venom or even better ones for it

Post by: ajit4647 on April 04, 2011, 10:21:18 PM
@ shashank - will try to get some good vids with the lipos tomm.

@traxxrc1 - no regrets. i got them and they are pretty good. and as long as they can make the Maxx put a smile on my face i am happy. Maybe when i pick up a second set of batteries or maybe pick up a set of 3S then i might look for a better company. anyway picking up a Summit as well, so might just put the 2S in there.  ;D

oh btw if u look closely u will see a cell phone taped to the truck. we were trying to capture FPV style vids. will try to upload those as well.

Title: Re: Traxxas E-Maxx Brushless

Almost every RC lipo batteries are just rebranded including maxamps. A major battery manufacturer based in Korea who my company consults for said that lots of the RC guys buy from them and rebrand.

So nothing surprising in seeing Tritech batteries. But prices are crazy considering you can buy hobbyking batteries for peanuts. Lots of batteries can be brought with no names from China. They should be almost same quality as this. And dont believe the C rating on them.

Took it to the beach today. a few pics. whatever rocky surfaces there were it climbed over with ease as long as the throttke was used gently.

only photos and no vids. will upload a vid later as i am doing some more tomm.

in the rocks shown in the pics, it was not placed anywhere it was driven throughout and cleared almost everything. even the gap in the 2 rocks in the pics.

will try to get better pics and vids tomm.

Title: Re: Traxxas E-Maxx Brushless

had to be very careful as it was doing wheelies anytime it found traction on small rock surfaces in the sand  >:D

Title: Re: Traxxas E-Maxx Brushless
Post by: ajit4647 on April 05, 2011, 11:56:00 PM
yeah. but it would have been very expensive luck for me today.

a friend of mine wanted to come along with us, he read waterproof on the servos and asked if the truck was waterproof. i told him everything was except for the ESC.

he asked for the truck and since it was on the beach i figured it was no harm. and first thing he does is does a few rounds, turns and drives it towards the water at full speed.

luckily a few feet from the water it tipped over.

when i asked him what he was doing he says - ESC is high up, water wont reach it, i wanna make the water splash.  :banghead:

never giving it to anyone anymore.

Title: Re: Traxxas E-Maxx Brushless
Post by: shashank on April 06, 2011, 12:55:40 AM
Wow! That's the problem in telling people the features of the truck. They think they can try out something and assume it would ok. If something goes wrong we pay the price.

Similar thing happened to me yesterday. I told my cousin not to give full throttle till he gets used to the truck and it was an open ground with a stray stone in some corner so I thought it's ok. This guy went crazy after two mins and hit the rock head on, lucky that there were no breakages.

Thats why I keep my slash on training mode even when I drive. :D

I can go crazy at any moment.Even my mother could drive it. ;D

Back to the topic,a best on the rocks but looking VERY cool.Superb photography man.Nice background and stuff.

And yeah,NEVER let anyone drive your cars.

nice pics.. i have never tried rock crawling but nitros are far too noisy for that. guess ill have to wait for electric...

cheers,

and yes.. never let anyone drive.. unless he/she has a better car and you get to drive it :P

The batteries being discussed are sold by us. They are manufactured in China and branded under our company name. They are 7.4v 6000mah 35c. The capacity and 'C' rating is true. They are hardcase and come presoldered with deans connectors. And the best part is it comes with 1 month replacement warranty (unless you have not used it properly).

There is always a need for cheaper batteries thats why we got these in, for customers who want to spend we have the complete maxamps range.

Hey guys,

A small video to show the E-Maxx at the beach.

a small bit at the end was filmed from inside the car while following it. it clocked about 60 kmph as seen in the video.

still not completely settled in with the E-Maxx so not trying any huge jumps yet. :)

Title: Re: Traxxas E-Maxx Brushless
Post by: Divyam on April 08, 2011, 10:24:19 AM
So that the LiPo doesn't get punctured in a crash..
Crashes happen a lot more often in cars than planes (AS You saw in thew video) and nobody wants to buy a new set of LiPos when they crash ;D

And a rock getting in can easily puncture a lipo.USUALLY,the brunt of the crash is taken by the parts and little force makes it to the battery but in a big crash,I've read about wires and balance taps being ripped out. :o

Title: Re: Traxxas E-Maxx Brushless
Post by: mail4ajo on April 08, 2011, 08:14:37 PM
I have been using cheap Lipos from HK and never had a case of lipo getting punctured. Yes, the hardcase will take the impact on hard crashes. The reason I want only hard case now is that if a lipo burns, it will spoil my battery tray (it happened a few weeks ago)

But the issue with hard case is that you cant see if the battery is puffed and will continue to use it.

Title: Re: Traxxas E-Maxx Brushless
Post by: iamahuman on April 08, 2011, 09:13:47 PM
Still its safer to use hard cases for off-roading.It might be fine in on road as long as you don't crash.

The issue you mentioned can be a problem but a way to avoid it is constant checking of the cell voltages.I'm gonna get an iCharger which can even measure IR.More stuff to look at.

Hey guys.

u know how things u dont want going wrong have a habit of going wrong right before a weekend.

happened to me today.

did a small wheelie in the sand and it rubbed against a branch piece and rear right tire ruptured.  :banghead:

anyway as they say everything happens for a reason. so now upgrading to Proline Trenchers. :)

so the Maxx is retired till next week. will try to make a few vids of the drifter.  ;D

Post by: traxxrc1 on April 09, 2011, 08:38:27 PM
lol...tires are a must upgrade with so powerful setups, even with a tmaxx they blow up easily, i'v seen many blown up tmaxx tires of magarwal's  tmaxx.

+1

I'v used flightmaxx from Zippy, and the pack was decent in perfo, but excellent in price, just $6.9for a 2s lipo , 20C and 2200 mah.

I'd still prefer regular lipos instead of hard case because most cars have a decent battery tray which is very less exposed to outer environment, i'v had a flux hp before and its battery tray had small gaps in b/w so it was risky, i used foam sheets to cover the exposed areas of the compartment and added foam blocks in front to prevent it from sliding in tray since my lipos were smaller and hence there was enough of space left in the compartment,
However since lipos on emaxx series are kinda exposed , it wot be a bad idea to stick with a hard-case one.
But for savage flux, which has a closed (not sealed) battery compartment with some space for cooling, foam layers can help a lot.
I'v used a regular lipo for almost a month with the flux with no exploding/bursting/puncturing issue, though faced the puffing problem a lot but thats simply due to insufficient lipo specs. If it would have been a hard-case, i would have killed it by now

Hey nice clip there  :) i like the way you've compared the Summit and the E-maxx. You might want to try and powder coat the rear wheels with black color to ensure uniformity, that is IF you dont like how it looks now  :)

PS: Can you post a video of your Summit at night ? Just to get an idea as to how much those LED's help at night.

Got a new body for the Maxx.

its my first MT body and took some getting used to the super thick lexan.

Its a Proline Chevy body.

a few irregularities in the cuts as i found out a little extra trimming was required to make the body clear the front bumper.

let me know what u guys think.

and since it was gonna be a bashing body i went with simple black.

Next up dyeing the rear wheels and the entire chassis black.

Title: Re: Traxxas E-Maxx Brushless
Post by: ajit4647 on May 10, 2011, 11:30:55 PM
as far as i know all the MT bodies come clear. they need to be cut out, trimmed and painted.

even the decal sheet was not precut.

I used a mild scotchbrite to sand the inside a bit. then sprayed a plastic adhesion promoter. then sprayed black from a Bosny spray can.

Post by: shashank on May 10, 2011, 11:50:54 PM
ok i didn't know it was a clear body. I saw a few online for revo which were pre-painted, so thought it'll be the same for the e-maxx

Had my first major crash and broke a few parts yesterday.

was at almost max speed and hit a rock with the front left tire. could not see it and went head on.  :banghead:

Damage assessment:-

2 Shocks.
1 lower arm.
servo saver.
one servo
one turnbuckle end.
lowerarm bulkhead hingepin.
and a tiny crack in the bulkhead where the pin broke.

my fault completely. should have made sure i had a clear view of where it was going. but anyway i guess its part of being in this hobby. :)

now the wait for the parts.

A pic with the RPM plates installed.

Rest of the parts will be installed slowly. too lazy to tear up the truck right now. will do it after the weekend   ;D

Sweet!!Let us know how it all works.Does the aluminium servo saver assembly reduce any possible slop that was there when you had the stock one on?

Title: Re: Traxxas E-Maxx Brushless
Post by: ajit4647 on July 30, 2011, 09:30:44 AM
Very little slop reduction i am afraid. Its almost like stock.  But the traxxas forums has a thread where someone used two servo savers at the same time and that seems to have reduced slop a lot. Will try that out once jayanth gets my new servo. 7950TG  ;D

Oh btw any precautions to be taken when i tear up the front and rear ends to replace the bulkheads and all?

Don't forget any screws :P

I remember having searched my entire room for 10-15 minutes for one washer.Try to be as neat and organized as possible.Loctite metal to metal contacts.Make sure everything is good after re-installation.You don't want to know during bashing 8-)

I spread a large piece of cloth before working on the truck. So if any screw falls off:
1. It wont bounce around.
2. It wont roll away.
3. If you misplace a screw it HAS to be on the cloth :)
4. Keeps the room floor clean :D

The skid plates will help a lot. Metal bulkheads is a must have.

Even my XXT servo needs an upgrade. Just out of curiosity - why the lipo guard? The TRX ESC come with LVC right?

Hey guys.

just got my first set of 3S Lipo's for the maxx, and another set of Zippy 2S Lipo's

the 3S are Dynamite RC 5300 Mah 25C Lipos.

and got the Big Bore aluminum shock kit as well. but strangely the "Big Bores" are actually smaller than the stock Ultra Shocks.

Pics below.

... the "Big Bores" are actually smaller than the stock Ultra Shocks.
Same reason I didn't buy the 'Big Bore' shocks for my slash 4x4 :D

Just had a bit of free time so upgraded the Maxx with all the parts which i recently acquired.

and the stock battery hold downs were too small for Lipo's, so made my own battery straps.

List of upgrades:

Proline Baja Bug Body
RPM Upper and Lower A-Arms.
RPM Shock Towers with body posts.
GH Racing Aluminum Bulks.
Traxxas Big Bore Shocks.
Hitec 7945TH steering servo.

and the Diffs were fully serviced and filled with LRP Diff oil.

a few pics :)

Title: Re: Traxxas E-Maxx Brushless
Post by: ajit4647 on September 21, 2011, 09:04:08 PM
hey,

i have been constantly popping off shock cups a lot. but luckily havent lost any of them till now. they keep getting wedged in or careful retracing has resulted in finding them somewhere in the area.

i remembered that Rajat had a mod done for his XXT which tied the cups down with a piece of wire.

but mine have no holes to do that.

so i improvised a bit and used a little bit of heat shrink tubing on the cup and the last coil of the spring. pics below. hopefully this will keep them safe.

Nice and simple mod. I'll do this on my slash just incase....

Nice idea. But what size of heat shrink is this? I dont see anything that can cover a 8 scale shock cap.

Title: Re: Traxxas E-Maxx Brushless
Post by: ajit4647 on September 22, 2011, 01:22:00 PM
ajo sir - the heatshrink when flat before heating is 2.5 cms wide.

i took one of the shock and spring to the shop to get a proper size one.

will post a pic of it once i get home. and if u cant find one there. let me know. i can buy here and courier it to you.

Ajit

another small mod for the maxx.

the stock steering bellcrank system has two posts out of which the slave post has bushings on it. according to traxxas forums this is what causes the steering to have a lot of slop in it.

checked mine and yes it had a bit. not a lot. but a bit. and there are two ways to fix this.

either remove the slave post and out another servo saver post there - which is supposed to be the best way because that has bigger bearings.

or find bearings small enough to replace the bushings.

so after searching all the bearing shops i have been able to find suitable bearings and yes it does make a difference. very negligible slop now.

pics below and a few pics from today's run.

Servo is doing well. no probs till now.

As some of you know my Emaxx took a dip in the ocean. i was going through the photos from that day and i actually captured one pic showing the maxx about to be pulled down.

and u can see the GoPro actually on the maxx in the pic. so i have on car footage of being drowned :P

and also uploading a small teaser video of whats to come in the next vid. GoPro footage also included.

Hey this GoPro stuff is good, Nice Image quality. I was thinking of taping an old cellphone to get some videos.

Title: Re: Traxxas E-Maxx Brushless
Post by: ajit4647 on September 30, 2011, 12:37:02 AM
thx.

it actually records in full 1080P HD. but i had to size it down a lot. otherwise it would take too long to upload.

and the best part of the GoPro is that it comes in a waterproof, dustproof and shockproof case. its a hard case which can take a lot of bashing.

and comes with a variety of mounts which can be used for mounting on almost everything.

btw i tried the cell phone taping thing. did not work. one blip of the throttle made it wheelie and flung the phone off.

ok. update after a long time. one of my lipos caught fire. pics below.

finally decided to retire the stock shell which came with the E-Maxx, it took a lot of abuse. was reinforced with a lot of duct tape. but finally gave up.

and a new vid as well. any comments and suggestions are always welcome.

older vid removed and reuploaded as there was some problem with the sound

lipo puffed up enough to break the casing tabs, actually both of them. dunno if the truck drew too much. had timing on low and gearing is stock. so no idea.
