Title: Traxxas Revo 3.3
Post by: shashank on April 02, 2011, 09:24:36 PM
It all started with a modest indoor heli (Modelart 3 ch heli) purchase from Modelart in Forum as i always wanted a flying RC which was not very expensive too . Flew it for a few days and decided i needed one which could fly outside and with more run time. Started looking online, and while researching i came across rcindia. Considered all the options in my budget and decided that with my budget i couldn't get what i had in mind, and moreover i will have to travel to Jakkur or some other place far from my house to be able to fly it and eventually i'll get lazy to travel, and it'll rot in a corner.

Started considering trucks/cars. Searched within the forum and narrowed it down to 2 manufacturers, Traxxas and HPI. For some strange reason liked Traxxas more and since the dealer was based in bangalore decided to go in for traxxas. Initially was considering electric and not nitro so the best car in traxxas was the Slash. Thought of buying it from US, but since it was too huge and 2.4ghz problems with customs decided against it. Called up jayanth and went in for a demo of the Slash. Unfortunately the car was not in running condition and couldn't get to see it in action. Instead saw the Revo in action and was so impressed that i decided i HAD to reconsider my decision ! The feel of a nitro, sound when it shifts up and the sight of leaving a trail of smoke as it thundered ahead was enough !! Discussed a few apprehensions i had in mind with Jayanth and decided its a nitro that i will enjoy more  :)

Then, the confusion between the t maxx and the Revo started. After considering the pro's and the cons of both mainly the difference in pricing decided it was the Revo for me. Evn though the t maxx had a lot of good reviews, somehow it never appealed to me as much as the Revo did. Sealed the deal last sunday and was at his place on monday for the break-in. Unfortunately, due to ez starter problems we were able to do only 2 tanks that day The following day we did about 2 tanks and i had the last tank to complete myself. Came home that night, woke up all the neighbors and finished that too :)

the following day i was to travel to my farmhouse and even though i had planned to run at-least 3 tanks all i could manage was 1. Today i did about 2 more tanks and even tried tuning the truck. Noticed considerable improvement in the top end speed and acceleration on tuning the high speed needle. Traxxas dvd was very helpful, but starangely i was not able to find any video online for tuning the 3.3 engine. Hope to take it to the track tomorrow :) But as they say, it cant be all nice. A neighbor shouted at me for running it near his house, so stopped it for the day  :( Not sure if i'll be able to run it again on the road.

To sum it up all. the experience with the car has been MIND BLOWING and loads of fun. Never thought it could be as good as it seems to be from the initial runs  :)

Avoid running it near your home.Neighbours can be noisy but they hate it when you are.

Yup. Actually wasn't running it near his house at all. That guy is a little finicky and i was expecting him to do that. Anyway, the best part was all the others were out of their houses inspecting this little thing which's making so much noise :)

The crowd was not as much of a problem as i thought it was, they just asked questions and i answered them patiently. Some of them had real stupid questions like "Mileage yeshtu" = "Wat's the mileage" and i just tell them 10 min run time and they walkaway all confused :)

Pics and vids coming up tomorrow :)

Say something like "Nimma Gaadi kinta kadime adare nimma gaadi kinta jasti maja"=Lesser than your vehicle but more fun than your vehicle.

A few days from now,I'll be answering the same questions. ;D

Lol. That is an awesome reply to people who ask such stupid questions  :)

So i dont think i'll be running the car tomorrow. Still no news if there's something happening at the track tomorrow

Congrats! Awesome truck man!! I have one gripe though - it's too clean :D Try and get some RPM parts, especially a beefier front bumper so that you're protected against bumps..

Title: Re: Traxxas Revo 3.3
Post by: shashank on April 04, 2011, 09:48:19 PM
Today was great  :) first time took the Revo to an empty ground and had a blast. Good learning too. The slipper clutch had gone lose and had to tighten it, called up Jayanth and as always he was ready to help. Quick read of the manual and 2 mins truck was back to normal  :)
Pics or vids weren't taken as there was too little light, i spent more than half hour trying to figure out what's wrong before i called him and lost sufficient light for video or photo. I MAY be going to the track tomorrow, if i do will definitely take a video and post it.

@Tassem: I'm sure u'll like the truck more now ;) its got a lot more dirt than yesterday.

Cousin hit a rock head on at quite some speed. The rock (decent sized one) was thrown back by about half a feet. Damage=Scratches on the bumper. This thing is strong and can take a little bashing !!

Title: Re: Traxxas Revo 3.3

Query about RPM bumper. Its a little silly, but still like to clarify it.Do i have to buy the mount and the bumper when i pick up the bumper or i can use my existing mount ?

Title: Re: Traxxas Revo 3.3
Post by: ajit4647 on April 04, 2011, 09:57:42 PM
congrats on the truck dude. :)

as for the slipper clutch. the one on my emaxx brushless went loose as well and had me scratching my head as to why it was not putting down the power.

finally sorted it out after like 10 mins and its back to being monstrous.  >:D

btw on a side note, does the revo 3.3 sit a bit higher than the e-revo BL??

Title: Re: Traxxas Revo 3.3
Post by: shashank on April 04, 2011, 11:03:51 PM
Seriously. I was clulessly meddling with the tuning settings and wasted about half a tank fuel. I could hear the engine scream, but the truck never matched the revs of the engine while moving. It is higher than the e-revo bl, but little lower than the t-maxx.

Title: Re: Traxxas Revo 3.3
Post by: ajit4647 on April 04, 2011, 11:29:55 PM
the main reason i ask is because my E-Maxx BL is very unpredictable at high speed braking and high speed turns it just tips over. and wanted to find out if u were having the same prob with ur revo..

turns are anyway a given. monster trucks dont handle great.

but the braking. i sometimes do good stoppies, controlled ones. but some times it just decides to do a front flip and scratch the body badly :(

Title: Re: Traxxas Revo 3.3
Post by: traxxrc1 on April 05, 2011, 09:33:49 AM
Always keep in mind that for MT's never brake and steer simultaneously . Other than that, soften the suspension, lower ride height, and your car wont tip over.
Stock Revo itself turn overs a lot less than savages, especially XL

congrats on your Revo 3.3. its a great car and is loads of fun. hope you have finished the running on and final tuning properly.

iam sure youll have a great time with.

cheers

Strangely i've not tipped my truck over till date. I follow this, before entering a corner if i'm at speed i brake to reduce the speed, just enough to be able to turn and then only do i steer the truck. Jayanth told me that you first brake and then steer. Never brake and steer simultaneously.

@Shutterx: Thanks :) i finished the break-in completely. I've run almost 5 tanks after that, still trying to tune it properly

Title: Re: Traxxas Revo 3.3
Post by: ShutterX on April 05, 2011, 11:35:14 AM
great. after you get your tuning done, just make sure that you do no run the motor too lean... i.e, there should be visible amount of smoke while accelerating... tuning it leaner will increase performance slighty but run your motor hotter hence reducing life.

trx 3.3 are not very easy to tune, ask your seller, it might be easy for him.
BTW what method did u use for break in??? Classic method or The So called Trx method

Title: Re: Traxxas Revo 3.3
Post by: traxxrc1 on April 05, 2011, 12:56:45 PM
And yeah, dont fiddle with LSN, HSN is enough for tuning, LSN is for very fine tuning, i have done mistakes of playing with my LSN and got in lots of troubles

Title: Re: Traxxas Revo 3.3
Post by: shashank on April 05, 2011, 05:44:21 PM
I'm still adjusting the high speed needle, haven't touched the LSN yet. I think Jayanth will tune it this Saturday if we catch up at the track

What do you guys ve to say about the RPM bumper? Should I buy their mould or can I use the existing one ?

Title: Re: Traxxas Revo 3.3
Post by: traxxrc1 on April 09, 2011, 09:03:37 PM
Bumper from RPM would be the best buy IMO, since it would even save your whole front in case of crash. And i guess it would even save your arms.
It gonna be expensive thoug ;)

Title: Re: Traxxas Revo 3.3
Post by: shashank on April 09, 2011, 09:40:36 PM
If i pick it up from US, its coming up to 1400 bucks including the mounts. Not so expensive if it is really so strong and can save the trucks front and arms on impact  :)

Title: Re: Traxxas Revo 3.3

ohh, got confused b/w bumper and bulkhead, blkhd is $ 100 something all inclv., quite expensive u know...;)

That IS expensive  :) let me break somepart and then i'll pick it up    >:D

Its the last upgrade one cn think for, some rpm arms and bumper would be more than enough

Title: Re: Traxxas Revo 3.3
Post by: shashank on April 10, 2011, 07:09:30 PM
So, finally the Revo gets to do what it likes best ! Racing and a little bashing !! Took it to the track, tuned it properly and then had a blast ! Tuning it ws actually simple, quite contrary to the views expressed by others on the forum. Just a 1/4th turn (i.e. 2 1/8th turns) did the trick and Revo come to life  :) Got that PERFECT idle ! It will never go off after the engine starts and gave me a 15-17 min runtime on the track!! Mighty impressed i must say. Many firsts to day: first wheelie  ;D first flip, first jump, first cartwheel and offcourse some casualties. Hit a nail at speed and ripped off a part of the front right tyre, exhaust coupler got punctured when it crashed tail first  :( minor body scratches, lost a body clip (doesn't really matter coz i found 2 good one's at the track. Lol) ALSO remembered to take a video and will be posting it shortly as i forgot to tske it from Jayanth's phone.

All in all, gotta say i'm very very impressed with my truck. Sturdy, fast and loads of fun  :)

Driving at the track is quite challenging, unlike driving on an empty ground or road. Makes you realize how much you suck as a driver, especially when you have a much better driver taking the same truck on the track and being able to drive straight. YES! that IS a challenge, atleast for me. Keeping the truck straight and preventing it from flipping over when it jumps. Got to work on it the next time i hit the track

@traxxasrc1: Yup. Right now i'm happy to let it be in stock condition, may be after sometime i'll upgrade parts :)

Hey there! Glad you had fun at the track! I'm back from my trip. Lemme know if you're plannin on visitin the track this weekend.

Did you pick up a replacement tyre? And what about the coupler? Fixed?

This weekend i'm not too sure, may be i can try. Will you be coming ? No i didn't pick up a replacement tyre yet. Its just a small hole so i'll run it till it rips apart and then replace it. Exhaust coupler too i'm thinkin the same :) used duct tape as of now and the engine is running fine

I needed to edit out whatever we had spoken and also some way to fix the accelerometer problems coz we took it on a phone :) Completely agree that nitro's have their own sound tracks. My very own cheap V8 :)

These may seem like a small useless jump but it means a lot to the driver - specially a newbie like me. :D

All the cars look so small in videos and pics! They are massive in reality. That bottle you ran over put things in perspective :D

@iamahuman: In the previous post anwar sir had deleted it, so the request  :)

@rajath: This is probably a very bad video, wait till i hit the track tomorrow. Will take my cam along and i'll take a proper video that time. This was taken on a iphone and the accelerometer screwed us up bad. So many videos i've taken have come upside down and i dont know how to fix it  :(

Finally, i bring some good news :) the truck is very much with me, no its not been sold. I found a buyer, the deal was almost done and in the last moment i realised i'll miss it a lot if i sell it. Explained my situation, and the buyer was very understanding. Thanks bimal :)

As for the truck, its been sitting idle for LONG now! I hope to hit the track sometime next week and fire her up. Is anyone free to join me ?

PS: I bought a new car 20 days back. Car confusion + exams all kept me away from RC'ing. Hope to comeback with a vengeance  ;)

Hey, Divyam, Rajat and I are planning to meet sometime in March. Our exams should be finished by then. Will that be okay with you? Anywhere between March 3( after 1 PM) and 15 and I'm totally free. After that, if I know a day before, I can make it to the track. Cool? So, we'll have you, Divyam, Rajat and me with off- roaders. I know a guy with a TT01 and he said he'll meet us too. It should be fun...

Guys, got some time over the weekend to fine tune my revo, now its running good, shifts to second easily and feels really fast.
Braking and heating is still a concern.
Need to get some experts review on it, not able to reach Jayanth (not responding). Was also planning for few upgrades, mainly vented discs and bumpers.

Any help with Revo I could get here in bangalore other than throttle rc guys ?

Title: Re: Traxxas Revo 3.3
Post by: pravesh736 on March 26, 2012, 01:15:55 PM
@preeth.. for brakes adjust your linkages first before buying the vented discs .. in these cars vented discs hardly makes much difference ... and as for heating problem do check if you are lean on any needles hsn or lsn or maybe the needles are not balanced meaning too rich bottom and lean top or the otherwise ... and also check for smoke through out the throttle range .. if u have smoke means yer good // too much is bad tho..

For braking, do as pravesh mentioned. It should hopefully fix it. About the tuning part, what was the temp you recorded after a few laps ?

My car also has the heating problem. It reaches 280-290 after a few laps, i see a smoke trail, it idles fine a bit sluggish though. Wonder if its the HSN that needs tuning or the LSN. Any help guys ?

Title: Re: Traxxas Revo 3.3
Post by: pravesh736 on March 26, 2012, 02:52:35 PM
if you are seeing smoke and its still high temp .. Check your idle gap .. it may be too open and lsn too rich to compensate for steady idle and hsn may be lean to get the performance .. start by reducing idle gap.. then tune lsn to idle well with a less than 1mm idle gap. And tune hsn .. but before all this set your needles to factory settings. That engine should run 220-250 good performance . if all this doesnt fix its tune then its the bearings or leakage, wrong plug etcetc

Apparently, Jayanth was busy and was travelling. I just had a word with him today and everything seems fine.

For revo brakes, instead of the spring on the linkage, use a fuel tube of the same length. I used it and the brakes were better. Else change to a better servo. The vented discs should be your last option.

Try the UK. I had no luck finding a Traxxas dealer in Singapore.

Close your eyes and go for  Traxxas India. UK prices are very expensive. Even if you buy in UK the prices are more than Indian prices.
Revo 3.3 price in UK is 500 pounds (street price)
500 British pounds = 43 181.2116 Indian rupees
Indian price for revo is around 36-38k (not sure)
As iamahuman said, Traxxas is not so popular in Singapore so Traxxas India can provide you the best deal.

ok guys just as you said i would go with the traxxas india, called them up just now... the price they quote is 40k, shall i go with it ...
as per the online its 39k which is excluding taxes and shipping....

or shall i give a try in UK and singapore... and missed out dubai as well...

and wait for a while?

I don't know what the Revo 3.3 would cost (E-revo was around 45K in India 2months back). But Dubai is the place where Traxxas India get's it supply (if you buy from genuine traxxas dealer in India). So if you have friends in Dubai that would be the best deal.

hi guys,

im still in confusion, found out this site

http://www.worldhobby.net/index.php?dispatch=products.view&product_id=29901

seems a very good deal, they claim the will dispatch that as a gift and would also mark $100 as the price for easy custom clearence, i live in chennai, i would like to know your views on going for this item if i do i will save up to 8000rs.... for which i can order some parts for revo, also what all extra parts which i would require like i came to know glow plugs, plesae list them as well...

and shall i order those parts along with the car or separately to avoid any custom issues

thanks in advance for your vaulable replies... cheers

It's wrong and illegal and fraught with hassles.

In short, don't do it.

+1 to what iamahuman said.

Its a risky affair to deal with customs, even after the seller undervalues your shipment. If you have a lot of contacts then, MAY be its worth it, else you can give this deal a skip.

If you HAVE to buy abroad, ask one of your friends to carry the truck for you.

Kindly note: Your information regarding our supplies is incorrect. Please do not mislead people online as to our supplies coming from Dubai. We have no relation from Dubai and are directly dealt with the United States Head Office. Thank you.

Bump
Nothing much to update really. My truck hasn't run in 5 months now. Will plan a session this Sunday, may be the last time it'll visit Pitstop.

While Nitro's are great, it pains to see my truck gather dust as i can't use it near my house. Unlike with electrics, where you can easily run near your house :)

During my weaker times, i feel i should sell it and get rid of it, a quick look at the videos shot at the track immediately makes me wiser :)

I have a reasonably big backyard, measure 25'x20' of free area where we currently have a few plants, it'll have to make way for a track soon i guess.

It looks pretty small, but still fun. I'm guessing it should be possible to have one in my backyard.

right now bangalore has no track .. serves us right .. half the time no one will be there and other half the time all bullshit .. 10% of the time people will do something constructive and race .. may god give us a track once we realize the value . sad but true .. all heros only  .

True that. We killed it. In the few times i'e been there i found it reasonably organized. You guys used to frequent the track more, you'd know better.

Hey i feel a backyard track of the above size will be better when designed for 1/18th or 1/16th scale RC's. :)

You're right, but that did look like fun didn't it ? Anyway, just checked the soil, its completely wet and feet sinks thanks to yesterdays downpour. Will have to wait for the rains to subside before i can start work and the track will be unusable when it rains :)

Title: Re: Traxxas Revo 3.3

it did however a smaller car will be fun too, in my opinion :) Are you planning a track layout for your nitro? Will the engine noise (music) be an issue to your neighbours?

Title: Re: Traxxas Revo 3.3
Post by: shashank on August 04, 2012, 10:41:49 PM
No the annoying neighbour is 2 houses away, however folks aren't very fond of the music either so will have to use it sparingly say once a week or so

Do you have any track layout in mind?

Title: Re: Traxxas Revo 3.3

No that will depend on the area i can use. I'll start simple (may be a jump and chicane) and make changes when i get bored.

Here's a very bad pic of the area to be used. Due to the lighting and the angle it appears small, i posted the size after measurement

We pay 3500Rs as membership fees at our track. A member pays only Rs 250 per visit. Non members pays high. I think Rs 600. Why dont you work on this model? There is a good amount of money required to make and maintain a track.

Why would a person be ready to invest unless he will see some cash unless he has spare cash or is a passionate guy? So bottom line, you need a track, be ready to pay.

Thanks for the info! I heard there's another person who is willing to consider having a track on his land. If all goes well, negotiations should begin soon. Will negotiate on similar terms.

I just saw the update on his profile and posted here, the owners demand was in the range of 8k pa or so, don't remember correctly.

What you're saying makes perfect sense. No one is here for charity. The owner demanded money, but he isn't ready to offer any facility. This again is my understanding from his update on fb.

Forgot to update but the car was sold last October to a hobbyist. Happy its in good hands. I'm on the lookout for a electric car now. May be the Slash 4x4, haven't decided yet. So if anyone has a good electric short-course truck or buggy for sale, please get in touch.
