I need help with transmission failure in my rustler.

this happened three weeks ago, i was driving over a rough terrain.
and suddenly a rock hit the bottom of my rustler at a high speed. around 40 kmph.
the car just lay there and had no movement , no matter how hard i accelerate or reverse it just wont budge.
i brought it home and made a video of this.
please see for yourself.

Open the gear cover up and put some pictures up. Sounds like you pinion has come loose.

sir i can 100% guarantee you that sound is not of pinion coming loose.
it defiantly has something to do with the transmission.

Well, then you possibly stripped an idler gear. Without any pictures, all we can do is speculate.

Your Pinion and Spur is not in contact.. Your motor is spinning freely. Remove the motor and re-align the spur and pinion.. The spur gear is made of plastic, there is slight chance you may have ripped it.. Open and check it..

now your thinking is parallel to mine
the issue can be with idler gear, drive gear or the differential itself.
this is an old model so most of these were in fiber and not upgraded at any point of time

stripped the entire car apart

At this juncture i was really frustrated as removing those old tight screws with a screw driver was really a hard task, efforts and pain for which cannot be mentioned in words.

So i stopped this immediately went to my old house which i use as my godown to store tools and my Vehical parts searched desperately for this,

this is Black & Decker electronic screw driver.
This has some really good amount of power and torque to remove those old jammed  screws.

Almost Got Them




And there is the problem 


The idler gear has stripped. 
this can be seen clearly, observe the right side of the gear it is completely damaged.
there are no teethes present towards the right when compared with left.
this was resulting in tripping under acceleration.
Now when it has been opened then why not service the transmission.
and re grease them.





You can clearly see that the teethes of idler gear have been completely destroyed and become powder.




Differential teethes appears to be okay from outside now lets open this and go inside and check.



The differantial is perfect all the small gears are intact and not a single damaged.
the outer gears on the body of the differential are also intact.
Even the drive gear is fine as can been seen above.

As arrival at this juncture took more than a day of work.

After cleaning packed all the spares for storage.
As the car is grounded for a longggg time now.

i have order the spares form tower hobbies approx 113$
This time i have ordered a robinson steel idler gear.  

This  one is made of hard steel  
Will enjoy the ride when that gear is back in.

The rusty is one of the simplest cars t work on. Thanks for the pictures as I got to take a look at the innards of a planetary gear diff. Good move on the Robinson idler gear. Go ahead, bulletproof that tranny and add a nice bl system to it and see what your rustler can do.

and their system is in proper working please let me know.

I'll let you know. What budget range are you in? I maybe able to make a few suggestions.

budget is not an issue
pricing should be according to the current market
and most probably i am looking at velineon vxl-3s complete set with the esc and motor

gandhar can u please advise a bl system which can handle handle 4 or more cells of lipo power
and is a direst fir to rustler
if not a direct fit then there should not be too much issues fitting it.

To be honest, if you can update, forget the VXL-3s. A 4s capable motor would be a 1/8 sized motor which would be undrivable unless you're looking at speedruns only.

I take it you're into normal driving and not speedruns? If so, stick to 2s. The batteries are shorter, which gives you a lower CG and are plenty with the current breed of power systems.

why i should not take VXL-3s in to consideration is strange.
please be advised that the rustler vxl has VXL-3s bl system be default.

and running would be speed runs as well as off road.

regarding the cg rustler has provision for a added part known as Traxxas Battery Expansion Kit.

after this install you can fit a 10000mah 2s lipo 7.4 Turnigy nano-tech battery
has a great runtime, more than a hour maybe.

6400 mah 11.1 v 3s lipo with great acceleration and wheelies.

this batteries are huge almost twice in height and weight as compared to standard ones.
but again cg is not affected that much.

i wanted more so was looking for 4s.



 

4s is not required for 10th scale . 2s or 3s is more than enough . it would also be hard to fit a 8th scale motor anyway
castle, tekin make good esc&motors . vxl is good too, very good for speed runs and its waterproof but there is some jerking initially in low end and u cant run 4 pole motor with it .
one hour of speed running will destroy the car and such huge battry would also add lot of extra weight to the car so ul also have to keep the gearing and temperature in check .
if using robinson gears do update all the gears to robinson or there might be trouble later on .

ps- 113$ tower order should arrive within 2 weeks including weekends if u chose the slow shipping and most probably no customs .

The VXL is an RTR system and I know of the battery expansion pack. Even with a 5Ah battery, you can run for a good bit of time. An hour of flat out running is not very good.

In the VXL combo, the motor is pretty good but the ESC is hit and miss, especially on 3s. For speedruns, you want something more stable. There's one small company making waves with the performance of their budget ESC.

Like Pravesh said, fitting an 8th scale motor in a rusty will need work. Trust me, 10th scale power systems are more than enough. Get yourself a nice 4 pole motor with a capable ESC and you'll have a hard time keeping the front end down.

Since you're looking for a 10Ah lipo, get your self 2 5Ah lipos and use them one after the other with a little time in between runs for cooling. You will have less weight to lug around and effectively, the same amount of runtime.

since they have kept it as small as possible and did not provide a tracking #.

small parcels from usa reach without problems/customs 9 out of 10 times within 2 weeks . tower parcels are generally so big that u can fit double the items u bought .

so what you trying to convey is that the tower parcel which i booked is too big and will get get caught in customs net

tower parcels are bigger than it should be . small amount(note-amount not size) parcels dont catch customs normally(yours should not b caught). it just means take note while placing large orders.

I said that a run time of more than a hour but in no way  i am going to run that much
will give it brakes in between to cool down i said i wanted that is because i stay at the run location for a long time hence wanted no hectic of charging it again and no need to carry extra battery.

Also, the running peak temp for most of the traxxas cars is 200 degrees.
so can u advise a cheap but reliable laser temp and a speed gun for this.

200 Fahrenheit will kill a Traxxas motor and a VXL will go into thermal shutdown before it hits 200F. You want to stay below 160F but you are safe up to 180F.

These guys have been known to make superb budget ESCs and they have a lot of online support. The 120A ones have been in Losi SCTEs with 550 class 4 pole motors and they work well. That says a lot about what they can do. In a rustler, even the 80A will work but I 'd suggest the 120A version. They are ideal for 2s and should scrape by on 3s. They work in pretty much in any standard 1/10th scale application. The sensored nature offers smoothness in power delivery comparable to the high end ESCs. It's highly programmable as well.


This should work as a good temperature gun.

A lot of folks use this one as well. I think Pravesh has the Duratrax temp gun. I'll be getting one shortly.

If possible, cancel the LRP order. That ESC is quite old. The Ezrun 60A should be fine in your rustler but take care of temps.

well they have shipped it now.

late but safe  the tower order has reached and a customs also has been charged Rs. 987/-
the receipt is collected by my family.
