what are they testing??? possibly trying to figure out whether or not the 787 can flap its wings for takeoff :D

its more of a shear stress test for the wing. See how much it can bear before it gives away.

exactly this is a stress test for the wings. if you look out of the window of a airliner while landing you will surely notice the flex in the wings during final descent. this flexibility is more or less necessary for a passenger jet as they travel quite  fast also that is the reason training aircraft wings like cessna 182's doesnot have lot of flex as they can approach at comparatively slow speeds.
