You should have asked him (politely) if he can tell you under which SECTION of which ACT is a mobile phone import is penalised.

Hello guys, I just now got a letter from customs office. They want following documents:

1. Invoice
2. Certificate of origin.

I've ordered a battery for my tablet. It costs 9$. Where can I get these documents? Please help 

If you bought from Aliexpress, you can ask the seller for an invoice. Or you can take print out of order page. You'll also need to send credit card statement as proof of payment. There is no Certificate of Origin in your case.

Yes, I bought it from AliExpress. They have also mentioned something link Identification. So you have any idea as to what is that?

You write a letter to them stating that the parcel contains a battery for a tablet pc. That will be the IDENTIFICATION. Purpose of Import is personal use. Also mention that its worth $9 INCLUDING SHIPPING. The invoice attached with the letter. Also the credit card  statement (underline/mark the particular transaction).

Regarding invoice, you can ask the seller over the Aliexpress chat service (TRADE MANAGER) for a receipt. If the seller says they dont have provision of a receipt, then you can take print out of the Aliexpress order page of that particular order. The page should clearly mention order date, Shipment tracking number, your address, and  FREE SHIPPING

Usually i get this retention reason:other remark when they want to charge custom..
But in this particular case they have retained it and have not sent it to domestic location..
Any help guys..

Thank you so much for your help. I've got the invoice from ALiExpress. That invoice and credit card statement I sent to the email ID mentioned in the letter of customs dept. I'll also send the hard copies by speed post to them.

Finally got it out of the clutches of customs :-)

I'd called the postal appraising section last week and the person told me that it has been approved and forwarded to next section. I'll have to pay whatever nominal duty is applicable.

It is now sent to post in my city Pune. Hopefully I get it by tomorrow. Thanks nairitb.

@ kpm838: You'll know the exact amount of customs duty only when the parcel is delivered to you. If it is shipped by Registered Airmail, you probably wont be charged any duty. For all other shipping modes, duty is charged for most of the times. Duty rate varied from 20%-40% depending on what category the product falls under.

@ nitin: Congratzzz brother.  Were you charged any duty?

@nairitb, unfortunately I have not yet got it. It's status is

I contacted Pune City office and they gave me one number. I contacted on that number and explained the situation. I got another number from them, it was for Pune RMS. I called them and the lady on phone checked the status. She informed me that the parcel is sent to my local post office yesterday at 3 pm. So it should reach me today. Otherwise I'll go and collect it tomorrow.

So if anyone else's parcel has the status 'CRC PUNE RMS', then contact 020 26123790. They will be able to help you.

Will update the status once I get the item. Thanks once again!

Finally! Finally!

Got the delivery. And the icing on the cake is without any duty!

It tool exact 2 months for this item to reach me. I placed the order on 26 April and got it on 27 Jun (after its stay of 1 month in customs dept at Mumbai)

Contact the seller from whom you bought the item. Check whether you were given the correct tracking ID. Since you haven't received the parcel, hence there wont be any signature of you to prove delivery.

For a REGISTERED parcel, SIGNATURE AT DELIVERY is mandatory. No signature means not delivered. Check you local post office also.

A short answer to your question is: YES and NO.

Suggest you go through the forum threads first. There are lots of people sharing their experiences of importing different kinds of RC products.

As far as your heli is concerned, if you go through the forum, you'll see that many people have faced customs issues when importing heli and quads. But there are other people also who have had a hassle-free customs experience. It all depends on the customs officer who checks your parcel.

An honest officer will check your parcel and detain/clear the parcel as required by law. Generally hobby grade items are not retained unless there is a genuine suspicion that the item's declared value is much less than original cost. Another issue can be if the item falls under RESTRICTED/ BANNED category. Restricted category in case of RC products can be Tx-Rx. However these also get cleared in most cases. So if your heli comes with a Tx-Rx, then there is a chance that it MAY be detained.

For an unscrupulous officer, there can be infinite no of reasons of detainment of your parcel 

HOWEVER, if the heli or any other item is sent by REGISTERED AIR MAIL (NOT AIR PARCEL), then there is very little chance that it'll be detained at customs (including no customs duty in 99% cases). But still it is at the discretion of the customs officer. Generally in FREE SHIPPING, they send items by Air Mail. But weight limit is 2kg for this mode. So if your heli is 2kg+, then shipping mode is generally Air Parcel. So ask your seller the EXACT shipping mode.
