Title: Are you smart ?
Post by: b4ggu on April 15, 2010, 12:14:43 AM
We are always learning, but I have come across a few people in my life who know everything.....

Ok all u cleverdickies out there, this one's for you-

There are only nine questions.
This is a quiz for people who know everything!

I found out in a hurry that I didn't.

These are not trick questions.
They are straight questions with straight answers..

1. Name the one sport in which neither the spectators nor the participants know the score or the leader until the contest ends.

2. What famous North American landmark is constantly moving backward?

3. Of all vegetables, only two can live to produce on their own for several  growing seasons.  All other vegetables must be replanted every year.  What are the only two perennial vegetables?

4. What fruit has its seeds on the outside?

5. In many liquor stores, you can buy pear brandy, with a real pear inside the bottle.  The pear is whole and ripe, and the bottle is genuine; it hasn't been cut in any way.  How did the pear get inside the bottle?

6. Only three words in standard English begin with the letters ' dw' and they are all common words.  Name two of them.

7. There are 14 punctuation marks in English grammar.
Can you name at least half of them?

8. Name the only vegetable or fruit that is never sold frozen, canned, processed, cooked, or in any other form except fresh.

9. Name 6 or more things that you can wear on your feet beginning with the letter 'S.'
Answers are with Anwar... LOL

Well I do not know everything, but still I attempted. Good questions !

1. Name the one sport in which neither the spectators nor the participants know the score or the leader until the contest ends.
Arent there many like these ? Wrestling, boxing, even in track atheletics, like 100m where you do not know the score till contest ends.

2. What famous North American landmark is constantly moving backward?
Has me stumped. No idea. Maybe a glacier or something ? Would like to know this !

3. Of all vegetables, only two can live to produce on their own for several  growing seasons.  All other vegetables must be replanted every year.  What are the only two perennial vegetables?
Has me stumped again !

4. What fruit has its seeds on the outside? Man. Not going good... I need to think on this one more !

5. In many liquor stores, you can buy pear brandy, with a real pear inside the bottle.  The pear is whole and ripe, and the bottle is genuine; it hasn't been cut in any way.  How did the pear get inside the bottle?

Haha. This one was easy for me. I had once visited a Vineyard, where I got to see this. lol. The fruit ripens on the tree within the bottle ( bottle tied on the fruit when its small ).

6. Only three words in standard English begin with the letters ' dw' and they are all common words.  Name two of them.
This one was quick for me : dwarf, dwell, .. couldnt think of the third though. Maybe need some time to think.

7. There are 14 punctuation marks in English grammar.
Can you name at least half of them?
I think this is too easy for us computer users :)

8. Name the only vegetable or fruit that is never sold frozen, canned, processed, cooked, or in any other form except fresh.
No idea !

9. Name 6 or more things that you can wear on your feet beginning with the letter 'S.'
Shoes, Sandals, socks, slippers, skies, skates.

I love Trivia! There is an interesting story to the origin of the term "TRIVIA". It means information or facts that you may or may not be interested to know.

In the good old days, the Romans were busy building roads all across their empire. Where 3 roads converged (Tri = 3 and Via = Road), they would put up a sign which would tell you where each of the roads led to and informed you about the hospitality (Inns) or perils (Forests) that you would encounter along the way. Now, if you were a traveller who has been down that road before, you wouldn't bother reading the sign, you knew all about it. If you were a newbie, you would stop and read.

Thus, the term Trivia found its way into quizzing parlance, if you had the time and inclination, you would read up trivia, if not then your life continued regardless.

Cheers!

These are the answers to the Quiz:
Some of you have got most answers correct.... Check it out.

1... The one sport in which neither the spectators nor the participants  know the score or the leader until the contest ends: Boxing.

2. North American landmark constantly moving backward:   Niagara Falls .  (The rim is worn down about two and a half feet each year because of the millions of gallons of water that rush over it every minute.)

3. Only two vegetables that can live to produce on their own for several growing seasons: Asparagus and rhubarb.

4. The fruit with its seeds on the outside: Strawberry.

5. How did the pear get inside the brandy bottle?  It grew inside the bottle.
The bottles are placed over pear buds when they are small, and are wired in place on the tree.  The bottle is left in place for the entire growing season. When the pears are ripe, they are snipped off at the stems.

6. Three English words beginning with dw: Dwarf, dwell and dwindle...

7. Fourteen punctuation marks in English grammar: Period, comma, colon, semicolon, dash, hyphen, apostrophe, question mark, exclamation point, quotation mark, brackets, parenthesis, braces, and ellip ses.

8. The only vegetable or fruit never sold frozen, canned, processed, cooked, or in any other form but fresh: Lettuce.

9. Six or more things you can wear on your feet beginning with 'S':  Shoes, socks, sandals, sneakers, slippers, skis, skates, snowshoes, stockings, stilts.

From where I am right now!

But, I think this forum is not the place for this, and possibly other trivia.

It is fun to exercise the brains once in a while :)  although discussions related to RC for the most part, and closer to aviation/automobiles/transportation/electronics/technical-advances in related fields makes most sense for this forum.

The real challenge is to post trivia that cannot be solved using Google searches.  I would be happy to see such items, as they would have to be pretty much *original* ones (everything is on Google already!).

I am not very good at aptitude test myself but I found this one to be very interesting. Must be a peice of cake for a few.

Question:

There are 10 packets of balls races and there are 100s of balls in each packet. Each ball race weigh exactly 1 gram. However, in one of the 10 packets, all the ball races in that particular packet weigh 1.1gram. You are given a precision weight scale. Now, you are allowed to use the weighing scale ONLY ONCE. In that single attempt, can you identify which packet has the 1.1 gram ball races?

Engine Riddle:

1. Engine travels to long dead end (measuring 8units)
2. Then engine travels up track QR and pushes B along and exits through R to a point in infinity
3. Engine now reverses and with B in tow, enters track RP
4. It now pushes A down into small dead end (3 units) and leaves it there
5. It again travels back up track PR pushing B and into the infinity track. Reverses here.
6. Continues down RQ now pulling B
7. Into the long dead end and reverses.
8. Into QP and grabs hold of A and reverses – It now pushes B and pulls A into the long dead end
9. Reverses direction and pushes A and pulls B up QR and into infinity
10. Leaves A somewhere along the infinity track and backs down RQ pulling B
11. Enters the long dead end and reverses – now pushes B along QP and leaves it at the small Dead end
12. Travels PQ,QR and down RP and starts pulling B along PR and leaves it. B is in place.
13. Engine travels up infinity track and attaches to A
14 Pulls A along RQ and leaves it there. A is also now in position.
15. Engine travels back into the long Dead End and then down QP and comes to a rest.

Whew!!!

Balls! Er, the Balls Riddle, that's what I meant......... ;D

Switch on the scale and put in all the packets at once. The weight should read 1010 grams. Start removing the packets one by one and with every packet the weight should reduce by 100 grams. Whenever there is a fluctuation of 110 grams, that last packet removed is the culprit. ???

We use the scale just once don't we?

Title: Re: Are you smart ?

 ;D

Quite close.. but you have used the scale multiple times. Further, there are 100s of balls in each packet, the number varies for each pack to pack and its unkown.

This is like all those others, where you try to make the quantity unique by taking 1 ball from the first pack, 2 from the second pack, 3 from third pack and so on and weigh them at once.  Whatever the fraction is after weighing is the pack which has the 1.1gm balls.  This is assuming the scale is high precision, but you can multiply the number of balls by a constant and pretty much arrive at the same results.
