Title: Don't they teach spelling and grammar in school anymore?
Post by: sanjayrai55 on December 14, 2012, 04:44:38 PM
Just saw one of the threads where the erudite gentleman had written

"electric 1s r fast... but nitro's r ma favourite & currently workin' on

"dont dey give glow

"thnx dhinesh... i lyked dat car

"i wud lyk to electric

and to top it off:

"dats da rule... but thnx 4 da reply

Wow! There's a theory (actually more of a theorem now) that you can write a sentence without vowels, and it would still be readable and make sense.

Anyway, "thnx for da payshunsh in read dis"   ;D

HEHEHE...... Well, its true. I had read about this somewhere where it says that there has been a survey done with thousands of people and at the end it was confirmed that our human brains are so fast that while reading something we do regularly, even though the letters in a words are interchanged making sure that the first and last letter are placed correctly, while reading the brain actually ignore the correct spelling and interprets the word by reading the first and last character.

The most shocking thing is that it is said a normal human uses just 2-3% of what a human brain can do.

People who were able to use about 4 and max 5% are people like Einstein.

We cannot even in the wildest of our dream also think what can be done if we could use 50% or full 100% of our brain power.

Maybe we could vanish or tele-port or what not.

LOL!

Or even better, think so fast that we actually cross the speed of light through sheer conversion of grey matter cells into energy and evaporate into the next dimension! :)

They do teach grammar and spelling in school although most kids are "too cool for it".

If you thought that was bad, take a look at FB profiles of teenagers. As a 17 y/o, I have many friends in the same age group and most of them type like that. I use FB to keep in touch with RC related activities. My news feed was clogged with so much junk from those people that I had to "un-friend" most of them. Boy am I happy I did it.

It pains me, so see such rubbish, and I remember all the Knuckle Raps by Miss Aloisias (My Grammar teacher). There aren't anymore dedicated grammar classes that i see in my Son/daughter's timetable and i distinctly remember of having 5-7 grammar classes a week (in, today's lingo, we all used to literally s**t in our pants when she walked in).

Yes, Sanjay, you are right, they aren't teaching Grammar anymore in schools, and those products you get to see here too, Al da Kool Dudes (http://www.rcindia.org/wanted/need-rc-car-for-reference-study-!!!/msg122981/#msg122981)  :banghead:

This thread is turning out to be interesting.....

But seriously, it took me quite a while to actually understand what did "payshunsh" mean and had to read this work a couple of times and try to pronounce it and then finally because of my "PATIENCE" to understand the work, I came to know it was "PATIENCE".

LOL!

Who said this ?
I have learned ABCD in Class 6 officially as per syllabus of West Bengal board of Secondary Education. Then what can you expect from me. Thank god that I have learn some English at home.
I have also opened Facebook account just to block my name, nothing else.

And some of my friends are still learning to minimize post in Facebook and how to avoid grammer ;D
Among them, one have only one year service remaining and still good in drafting. Who cares about the future ?

I have been warning people once, and then deleting their posts/threads when it gets to be too much.  I urge other mods to do the same.  We are not in the guessing business, and if one does not spend a few seconds extra typing out proper words, I am not sure this forum is for them.  After all, they are not writing essays here... it is a few sentences a day, which means literally only a few seconds extra is needed to do it right.

Facebook friends and people who read their SMSes may have such patience, we don't.

I tend to empathize with both camps - it pains me to see
what passes as English these days  .... But...

on the other hand having a teenage son on the premises
I think that this is their way of rebelling ... being different
from their elders. Not that they couldn't communicate in proper
English if they wanted to.

I am just thankful that their rebelling takes this relatively
harmless form and not drugs or violence.  Overall its nothing
to lose sleep about.

Saikat da!
While I tend to think similar, I have seen for want of proper communication people have landed themselves in embarrassing situation and sometimes important items have  landed at a place they weren't intend to, communication is only complete, especially a broadcast communication like these, if the whole population understands it, else it is garbage.

Wow! This is now getting warm! Anwar, I only meant it as a general comment; kids will be kids, and times, as Dylan said, are a'changing.

That said, the primary function of language is communication, and this is a serious forum, for "masti" you do have FB. Therefore, a certain discipline and decorum, without being Draconian about it, is certainly not amiss.

Thanks all, and I hope this discussion does continue, makes a little change in the Angle of Attack at full revs!  ;D

Anwar's post seems to be the only option left with the mods. Any other suggestions - out of the box perhaps?
Maybe a "warning" in the dialog box used to type/create posts?

I like SMS language. Its short and easy to type, however i do not use it on online forums.
I have nothing against SMS lingo, but users posting on a platform used by a large group ought to spend some time making their posts understandable.

superb grammer in this new post  :help:  :'(

My point is not about grammer, it is against SMS language.  People have varying levels of grammer skills, that is understood.  They are related though, use of SMS lingo causes grammer to deteriorate.

As a matter of policy, it is SMS language that we don't want to see here.  Mistakes in grammer are much less of a concern.

Use of SMS language is totally about people being LAZY... nothing more, nothing less.

Title: Re: Don't they teach spelling and grammar in school anymore?

+1. Not everyone can converse/express themselves in English fluently due to several reasons and it should not be held against them.

Not being able to spare time to type complete words yet expecting everyone to jump out and help is what i would like to see a change in.

"Payshuns and patience" is nowhere a sms language ...... its just a person poor on spellings disguising and ignoring his short coming... in other words..... yes TOO LAZY to correct

Yo Ol Dudes! We nid to thrash dis issue once n 4 all. R we ready 2 accept dis new lingo on da forum? If not, lets b clear abt dat in no uncertain terms. Da new kids bring in new ideas and points f view. We ol fogeys have to adjust n appreciate. While we argue abt da English language, dey (da younglings wid bad grammar) fly rings around us on d field. Dey r like a breath f fresh air. Sumtimes 2 brash n 2 bold - I admit.

+ 1 to the 'younglings". :hatsoff:

P.S. I advocate the use of 'correct' English as a language in my professional capabilities but I'm learning from the younglings about flying and RC.

P.P.S As I may have said before, this is not an English Language forum.

My apologies to the gentry that I may offend with this post..... :giggle:

Point to ponder : In all other similar International Forums, sms / text/truncated English language is not used or accepted. Just F.Y.I.

Its rightly as mentioned by Anwar, its not the grammar that anyone is against its "the intentional exclusion of the Same is the Shame" somebody who cant speak english too well may have grammatical mistakes in a post... my suggestion is that even MODs can correct for the sake of the forum. We have a report button and can report a post thats need correction.
But a selfish me, myself, my spelling... is not accepted..

PS. I lost my Blackberry and was reduced to a 'basic' phone with no predictive tex.. dictionary.. I refused to send text msgs because of the pain in typing and also the temptation to eat up my alphabets, i stuck with the accepted ' U for 'you' 2 for to and 4- for.

well the bottom line... lazy posts not allowed and there should be measures to keep this out of the forum.

Point to ponder : In all other similar International Forums, sms / text/truncated English language is not used or accepted. Just F.Y.I.

This is one big reason I have been "Idi-Amin"ish on this SMS issue.  It is done by other forums for very valid reasons, and our decision is validated based on the same history.

And one final time, we are not the grammer police... we are the SMS lingo police.

While I personally use (and I like to use) Hindi as much as I can, it takes away from the clarity of communication on this forum.  Another problem is the audience (not just national, but international too), who do not speak/understand Hindi. It just muddies the water even more. "Indianism" has not much to do with using Hindi, in the context of a forum like this (which is open to the whole world).

In short, it is neither practical nor common-sense.

If Hindi were to be allowed, everybody would use it. That would defeat the purpose of the forum as this is not a language specific forum.

This is one of the famous forum of one of the south east asian nation, people from all over the world frequent this forum, only to look into quality stuff. though this thread will have limited audience (Not very by our standards, this one has over 25,000 hits and a fairly new thread) quality thread will have much more hits, local issues, not connected anyway to international audience could be discussed in hindi, i guess.

Bottom line is 'Hindi' (typed in hindi and not in Hinglish) could be allowed, for Anwar Bhai's consideration, i remember having posted in tamil and of course a translation too. ;D ;D

PS
will i be stoned for this? :)

In school i studied English tamil and French, no Hindi, so for me it still is limited to reading a few words with some difficulty

Why muddy the waters, and take away from the focus/character that we have now ?

It is absurd to imagine that people will actually take the pain to post in Hindi, using  Hindi alphabets, and Hindi written using English alphabets is worse than SMS language to read !

In short, this is "a forum in English, focusing on India".  Period.

though i had preferred strict English, language of ur choice with mandatory english translation  is apparently a good solution , especially in case where one believes his grammar to be so pathetic that another language could possibly aid coherency of the post  ...... ;)

With English as a medium use of SMS language is not allowed, use of proper grammar is advised yet forum users do not post in a clear and understandable format.
Say we were to have Hindi as a medium too. It would be an extra burden on the Admin to monitor an additional language.
It may not be practical to implement - Anwar, as a forum Admin, should be in the best position to judge.

This thread deals with use of SMS lingo. Suggestions regarding Hindi as a medium will fit better in the Suggestions thread.

where was i when this party began!!! ;D

missed rolling off my chair!

Jokes apart - a forum is almost always a place that 'gives more information' to people who are not necessarily part of the forum...

our interest to keep that channel of "Standard" communication should never be tampered with... with this present discussion we are wondering only about how we 'Post' not how its understood... the purpose is defeated, and we have to take the extra effort to make sure we are understood not jus "heard"

cheers to all the pundits!!  :salute:  {:)}

sorry but I read that as "dont dey give blow" (excuse the innuendo). Like you said @sanjayrai, no vowels required to interpret. In my case consonants changed.

With what we've done to our heritage, I don't find it surprising what were doing and will do to the adopted ones. But like many up in the thread feel, Standard is a standard because the majority choose it to be standard and it should be adhered to. Flow with the traffic/be the blond driving on the "wrong side of the road"/or create your own route (someone in the 16-17th century did get rid of the "thou"s and "art"s). In our case, most drivers do not understand "4ever" or whatever (I cannot even think of sms lingo to quote as examples)...
