How did this happen? Which email service? If you still have a recovery option or access, just recover it, generate a tuff password and change it. Change all your security questions and answers. Probably your recovery options in too weak. IF you use gmail, also activate 2 step verification. It makes your account hack proof. Also, how did you get the ip of the attacker?

After you do all that... Do a Virus Scan... I have lost a computer to viruses... Viruses can detect your keystrokes and mouse clicks...
If they can do that, they can send your password to the hacker....

If you think it is a BIG issue... give a police complaint with the IP adress...

What I feel is that, there was just an attempt to hack into your account. Post the mail sent to you.
