Don't wake a Tiger until you've factored the teeth

Use ply, and cover the ply with a 12 mm cork sheet.

Whatever suits your need, budget and space available!

I built my table at 8' X 4' because that was the available size of the ply

I needed a large size because I sometimes build large models

Pine is fine! Just have to ensure the surface is truly flat. Also, drawing boards are good for drawing pins - difficult to use Tpins though

Looks like 12mm cork sheet will cost over Rs 2000 to cover a drawing board.
8’x4’ must have cost a fortune!

I really want a thick cork sheet, but so far I’ve managed with something called ‘Push Pins’ on a drawing board. Limits me to 2’x3’ working space...

Can use a 6 mm sheet for T Pins

I got mine free  Grin  Someone was throwing it away  Wink

But 6 mm is not expensive - https://justkraft.com/product/cork-board-sheet-size-20x30-cm-6mm-thick-csdb20x30?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIua2yy-Dx9QIVepRmAh0zEwCoEAYYBiABEgIIy_D_BwE

Its been over 5-6 years after a busy stint of scratch building,  that I have built a Balsa Plane (4-5 self cut kit and 2 commercial kit still lying in my attic).
Last I was really really eager to "build" those "Magnetic Building Board" locally using local material. Right type of Magnets , the metal sheet with holes to sandwich the magnets and a light but sturdy "Metal Base" were something hard to find.  Is someone build such a building board ?

@ujjwaana
@sanjayrai55

I have a dozen small but powerful magnets.
A pack of 100 round magnets of 6mm x 2mm is available on Amazon for just Rs 299!

https://www.amazon.in/Refrigerators-Magnets-Multi-Use-Whiteboard-Bulletin/dp/B07G7ZMGT5/ref=sr_1_17?crid=UFC726SASO3N&keywords=magnet&qid=1644501210&sprefix=Mag%2Caps%2C227&sr=8-17

The problem is what to use as the metal base on say a 2’x3’ drawing board...

Regards

This magnetic base system is OK for large scale builds. For normal builds it is very painful to use, lots of positioning and fixturing

For regular models visual alignment over plans and cyano is fine. In fact I rarely use pins - just hold the part for a few seconds after application of cyano

However, if you do want, you can but the GI sheet from any ducting manufacturer or even many building material stores. Keeping it flat is a different issue though

Technology has changed though - you could consider 0.5 mm PVC magnetic sheets, resin coated magnetic steel boards etc.

Use ply, and cover the ply with a 12 mm cork sheet.
