Title: Another scratch built 3D foamy
Post by: anwar on December 20, 2009, 01:00:38 PM
My brother is seriously building foamies these days, and here is the latest.  Built out of ordinary foam available in arts/crafts and school supplies stores (looks like what is known as "biofoam" in India, which is neither depron nor EPP).

Because of its thickness and the paper covering on either side, it is very sturdy, requiring no reinforcements.  My brother built it all, except for doing the tape hinges, receiver setup and test flights, which I am doing (as he is out of town for a few days). Not sure which plan he built this from.

Windy and rainy the last couple of days, but should be good tomorrow.

BTW, all the hardware is from HobbyCity, including the linkages, servos, et al  (except for the Futaba receiver).  The TowerPro combo with Flightmax lipos (1000mah, 800mah and 500mah) seems to deliver very good power (as judged by holding the model nose up in one hand and trying to hover it).

Tried the maiden in pretty heavy winds. Felt like not enough thrust. Could hover, but there was a feeling of lack of power.  Also pretty unstable in inverted flight.

Got to try again on a less windy day, with slightly smaller batteries.

Need to also put some tape lines on the wing to hep with orientation.

Chaiya? Chaiya??? I guess you meant Anwar 'Bhaiya'!  >:D You can get that tape at any good Car Paints shop. It is called Masking Tape in India. BTW, congrats on your new refrigerator! ;D

I would be surprised if they are the same thing.  Masking tapes, as the name suggests, are built to be removable.  These, on the other hand, are super strong, and are used for applications that demand strength.

I picked these up in the US.  But I did see them in one local shop in Qatar.  No idea where the same is available in India.

Yes, seen these at SP rd shops in blr. Try the hardware markets in your city.

Correct.  I forgot to mention that these are also called "fiber reinforced tapes" or just "fiber tapes".

The PDF plan is available here :

I believe the plan was located by this : http://www.skyhighhobby.com/about

BTW, we flew this again last weekend, and the winds were favorable. Upgraded the prop a bit, and it flies OK now.  The power setup is still a bit underpowered, so an upgrade is being considered (only for more 3D action).

I guess you guys need some thing like these:

I have used it on the edges of the foamies and they hold good. Just wish the tape 'glue' was little stronger. Nevertheless one Tape you shouldn't miss.

PS: the Above tape is too wide for applying on the edges, buy the below one instead (I gave the above link for illustration as only that has a pic)

Built  a similar  foamy of the same material around a year or  so back and used simple cello tape for the  hinges  and they worked great .
here are  some pictures it flew great and was quite sturdy as well.

That looks like a Yak (the first one was an Extra).

Did you just use foam with different color coatings, or color it yourself ?
