Title: BioFoam 50" Alula - Powered swept forward Flying wing
Post by: ashJR7202 on February 20, 2012, 12:20:24 PM
For Long wanted to Build big Flying wing, which will fly gently, stable and can ride on thermals.......

so decided to go for 50" flying wing....then Praddy gave me idea of making ALULA instead of traditional flying wing....and i like this bird...

it has slightly forward swept and dihedral of around 1 degree.......

Decided to make own plan..downloaded few pics from original website and some forum and started creating Vector drawing in CorelDraw.......after completing took print out in A4 size, stick  it together and cut the main wing.

Decided to make KF2 airfoil.. main wing was cut in 8 mm Biofoam, KF2 step airfoil in 5mm and control surfaces in 5mm.

planning to keep it as light as possible...so planning to use 2208, 1800 kV motor with may be 1000mAh 2s Lipo and 7" prop.. power system is not yet finalized...will have to experiment....motor will be mounted in the front in puller config..

here are few pics

over the weekend was able to make removable rudder, control surfaces and able to mount servo.....

to make rudder detachable, i used 2 cm long, 5x3 mm hollow Cf pipe and fixed it on the fuse, and used 3 mm CF rod in the Rudder so that it can be easily inserted/attached to fuse..here are few pics

Nice build Ash!! The detachable fin is good. Did you consider Nylon bolts instead of CF Rods ? you can get M4/M6 bolts long as 2 inches.

Ash
That looks like a good slope soarer
Isn't the original design supposed to be a sloper or a combat wing ?

@Ujjwaana,
thanks yaar, i was also thinking same, it was better option but would have taken more time in getting it so thought of completing it with CF tube and rod

@xantos,
original design is a soarer, but thought of putting little power to it...lets see how it fly...

Cheers
Ashish

which type connectors are you using for servo (seems like snap on), i have never used thats why asking .

what is the motor specification and battery you will be using

waiting for the maiden

Finally completed and was able to maiden it on sunday.... {:)}

thanks to Praddy and SLS...to successfully maiden it...test pilot was praddy and launcher was SLS...

initially used CF 2805/1600, with 6" prop and 2s 1000mAh battery to keep setup light.

but during maiden we realise than it is just able to fly level....so changed setup to 2208/1800 motor with 6" prop and 3s 1000mAh battery..and wow it started climbing pretty decent.....

it was really wonderful day.. praddy, SLS and me enjoyed flying this bird... it was gentle....pretty stable.....

unfortunatly i forgot my camera so video this time..but next time will surely do it...

now planning to upgrade it with folding prop and to build canopy to reduce drag...

here are few pics

cheerss

Hi Ash

The bird looks beautiful in air. have you used some covering on the wings leading edge? It looks so shiny in the pics.

Happy flying

Now I have one more query..

I asked the shopkeeper what glue do i use to stick biofoam.. he said Fevicol SR

Is there any other faster glue we can use with biofoam or thermocol?

Post by: VC on April 13, 2012, 10:40:41 PM
Please explain the terms "normal size" and "big sheet". What are the actual dimensions?

You can use Fevitite Rapid or Decoration glue to join Biofoam.

actually i had asked him the dimensions but forgot them till i came home :P
I thought it better to not give that information instead of giving the wrong information.. :)
I ll go there again in some days and update my post

also where do we generally get fevitite or decorative glue from, whats its commercial name and how much does it cost?

I am attaching the Full A1 and Titles A4 Size plan i created to build this Alula. I used CorelDraw to create plan and then publish it in PDF. it will help, if anyone willing to build this one. this plan does not include canopy, but basic wing and KmF2 airfoil sections. one might need to alter tail piece so that it will not hit ground while landing
