Title: Condor - a powered glider for thermals
Post by: rahulroy31 on June 02, 2022, 04:04:01 PM
A thermal plank with low wing loading and a low drag airfoil.  It has elevons and an active rudder.
Dimensions and details
Wing Span panel1 =695 mm, Wing Span panel 2 =298 mm, Total = 1986mm (corrected)
The Airfoil - HS 117.
Cord panel 1 =250mm, Cord panel 2 (tip) =150mm
Sweep panel 1 =0, Sweep panel 2 (tip) =30mm
Dihedral panel 1 = 20mm, Dihedral panel 2 = 150mm
Vertical Tail to wing TE distance = 410mm, Vertical Tail cord 100mm, Vertical tail span 230mm
Control surfaces are elevons and rudder
The wing is hotwired out of EPS and covered with fiber-glass (vacuum bagged). There is a CF tow (5mm) running on top and bottom at 30% cord. The two outer panels of 298mm each are detachable for ease of carrying.
The elevon cord is 40 mm and it is across the whole length of the inner panel. It has a kevlar hinge built into a skin, and the underside gap sealed with mylar (BO-PET film)strip

Wing area in inches = 723.4 sq inch
Electronics
2212 980kv motor, 30A esc,  9x5 folding prop, 2200mah 3s bty, 2 x 17 gm servos, 1X 9 gm servo,
AUW = 903gm, 31.85 oz (with a 2200mah 3S bty)
Wing loading = 6.34 oz/sq ft
Wing cubic loading = 2.8
Spiral stability = 4.63, Vv = 0.015, Eda = 10.47
CG @20% SM = 1.54cm, @15% SM = 2.73cm

Happy Flying

@rahulroy31,

A 3m glassed wing model at 6oz loading?

Quite an achievement! Congratulations.  :hatsoff:

Please share gsm of glass cloth used.

And I can’t find any reference to HS117 airfoil  :banghead:

Regards

Iyer

@KK Iyer uncle
Here is the reference to HS117 airfoil
https://www.aerodesign.de/profile/profile_sp.htm#hs117 (https://www.aerodesign.de/profile/profile_sp.htm#hs117)

Thanks Yash,
Wanted to see the airfoil as reflex, if any, was not visible in the pics posted by Rahul.

It is 2m wing (1986mm)... not 3m
Thanks for bring it to notice.. will correct the total span typo in the main post... the rest of the details i.e individual spans, wing area, wt etc  are correct

I have used a 32 gsm FG cloth, which i had bought from banggood some time back, laid at 45 degree bias.. and it has a CF tow built up spar

For airfoils I refer to aerodesign.de a lot..
