High spirits we have: gravity we flout.

Started the new year with a beautiful new SPAD; Correx Mig 7. Building using plan by Dave West Hats Off.
Got the plan printed on A0 paper. Formers made out of two 3mm coro glued together with flutes perpendicular. Glue the sheets together before cutting the formers to reduce work and cutting error.
Former glued using rubber glue. Fuse cut out of 2.5mm coro and glued using hot glue.
Battery bay is my idea  Tongue

Ugly spar cut out of 3mm plywood with dihedral brace on both side.

Wing + spar. Airfoil turned out little edgy but still flight worthy.

Thanks Praveen!! This will be powered by a 3536 1100kv motor and a 11x5 prop.
The pane looks huge with wing span of 1600mm and length 1000mm. Trying to keep it under 1.2kg otherwise i'll have to buy new motor for it Undecided

Practice, and only Practice will make you perfect

Good build Amit, few issues with mig 7 you must know
1. She will be laterally sluggish , may require a shade extra Throw,
2. You will not see the stall coming, she will stall very abruptly, so for the maiden come down with a shade extra speed,
3. Low speed flying will be fun
4. At slightly high alpha she will wallow in roll plane
5. You may require aileron rudder mix for turns for a clean turn.

Let me know the flight report, looking forward to the video

Thanks Augustinev!

5. You may require aileron rudder mix for turns for a clean turn.
I thought so hence increased rudder by around 30%, will mix with ailerons Thumbs Up

You will not see the stall coming, she will stall very abruptly
That's my biggest worry, add to that a kinked airfoil Sad

@ashJR7202 Thanks and welcome to the club Smiley Yes I heard you were there, looking forward to see you next weekend Thumbs Up

1600 mm wing span ! thats a huge plane master  Salute

As gutsy sir stated it will have poor lateral stab and more prone to tip stalls,so should maintain good speed for landing and sharp turns! even a bit CG variation plane will dance in the air!
my suggestion better to have some  higher kv motor like 1400kv ! will have enough power to pull out from low altitude deep stalls!
because i have faced these problem with lower kv rpm with P-51 elelctric, than i have replaced with 1450kv now it flies like a real one!

All the best for maiden master and waiting for video! Thumbs Up

Don't have a better motor right now Sad will try with higher pitch prop, maybe a 10x6. hope it works; if not then i'll get a 1400kv motor.

Amit

Laterally sluggish means very stable laterally , Fin height had been a issue with the MiG that's why lateral oscillation at high alpha, good low speed (Without manoeuvring too much). motor should not be an issue, if you pick some speed and climb at a shallow angle of climb

Information sharing improves knowledge of both.

While bending the fuselage, you have to cut the inner surface flute one by one as described in Spad to the boon site and after fixing, just have to glue again with thin epoxy layer so that smooth curves can be achieved with toughened surfaces. A simple picture just added for others drawn in MSPaint and hope it will explain more.

Amit
Like someone said what a beauty, did you see the low speed glide, she will be fun there too, also must've noticed how the right wing fell, she is stalling at about 11 alpha, but will recover instantaneously, the moment you lower the nose.

Superb

Thanks a lot guys Smiley
@Kalyan that's exactly how i did it, a little more patience would have resulted in a smoother curve on the fuselage.
@Augustinev yes she glides a slow speed although the glide ratio is very low. Overall she is more fun at slow speeds Thumbs Up

fantastic plane ....  Hats Off .. Maybe you could add a landing gear.. Since it flies in so slow a thin 2 mm steel wire might suffice, no?

Thank you Koushik, i have no plans of putting on a landing gear. The field we fly on is not suitable for rolling take off and has enough grass for a belly landing. Also this bird is way to heavy for 2mm Smiley

I gave away my Mig to Rajeev in exchange of build material so i guess its time to build a new one now Thumbs Up
This time I'm building the mig with 1300mm wing span and AUW under 1000gr. Formers are made from sign board material. Just glued the printed plan on the board and cut using hot blade. Holes in first three formers have been inverted for battery tray.

Some progress Tongue
The first mig was very heavy and most of the weight was because of the plywood spar. So this time i'm keeping the spar as light as possible. The spar now is made up of 5mmx1000mm carbon fiber tube sandwiched between coro with flutes perpendicular to each other. To make a dihedral; i'm using a small piece of aluminium tube bend to desired angle as sleeve over the carbon fiber tube. Basically, just pushed the CF tube through the aluminium tube. I've used this technique before and it always works great. The CF spar was glued on the wing first and then the coro spars.

Using fiber tape in the tail section instead of hot glue this time. Also no rudder this time. Looking good now Smiley

Flew the mig today, flew just as beautifully as the previous but much faster and docile. Will post a video after doing the color scheme.

Happy is a man whose hobby is his profession

Hi SLS

That MIG is soooo beautiful. How did you make the canopy from ? Please use only marking and insignia on her...she looks so pristine in white.

Thanks Roopesh Smiley

Thank you ankurkaul17, I know she looks good in white but with all white its very easy to loose orientation. Check the attached picture of the plane hanging on a wall of almost same color as the sky we get here. Have not decided on the color scheme yet, will update here.
The canopy is made from a discarded trex canopy from a fellow flyer but a better canopy can be made from 1 litre mirinda bottle.

Why are these files called "d" files ?  They are plain PDFs, the widely used format.

Also, if you found them on another website, please post the source.  We cannot host files without attributing source.

Seems like you still have not read guideline 7 here http://www.rcindia.org/rc-india-forum/forum-usage-tips/  Smiley

Please note that we have to treat forums like this more like online versions of newspapers... would you like to see a newspaper site content in SMS lingo ?  While it is convenient to the poster to use SMS language, it is terribly inconvenient to the readers.

High spirits we have: gravity we flout.

Please wait at least one day before posting followup to your own posts.

Yes you can build it with 3mm coro; but you have to work hard to keep the weight down.
Make spar out CF and coro like i did in my second build.
Make former out of two sheets of coro glued together with flutes perpendicular. like i did in my first build (check out first page of the thread)
Do not use hotglue any where, for gluing former's use CA sprinkled with salt.
Firewall you can make out of 3mm plywood.

ps: please note that this plane will require intermediate level of skills to build and fly. this should not be you first plane for either building or flying.

Installed landing gear to the mig, no tail wheel yet but still steers like a dream. Also added a spinner, glides have improved considerably. Had lots of fun today, rolling take offs are easy peasy. It just runs over the roughest terrain like a boss Cool
