Title: DEPRON PLANE SCRATCH BUILT
Post by: b4ggu on October 23, 2013, 08:39:50 PM
Hi Guys,
I am Scratchbuilding a 1000mm wing span Depron plane and will keep you all posted on my progress in case some one else wants to follow it.

I will be using ;
1000 x 700mm Depron sheets 2 of 6mm thickness
and  2 of 3mm thickness

Either Tile trims of Aluminium or bamboo flooring cut into 10mm spars x 15mm thick.

MOTOR and ESC : Depending on the weight the plane comes out at finally, motor will be as suggested by Experimental Airlines (Workhorse range) with Turnigy plush 40 or 60 amp ESC

Hobbyking's 10gram servos

3 cell 1800 or 2100 or 2200 lipos..(That is what I like to stick too as all my planes are based on these type of packs.)

Here are the first few images.....

Flat Fuselage inspired by Morris the Knife; 4 to 5 sheets of 6mm white Depron with Scrim tape sandwiched and carpet adhesive spray joined.

Aman,
I dont think any beginners should build this; Follow it by all means but they will be better off constructing a learner aircraft with high wing than this one. This is a midwinger and I am presuming it will be very sensitive plane.

Is this tape the same tape we get in brown colour India?.... does it stick well on coro?

Yes I do not see why not... It does not stick on EPP though..

Some more development on the WING

More.....

Wing more or less completed.

Ailerons built complete with 3mm x 1mm x 750 Carbon flats from Hobby King cut and pushed inside and cyanoed.

Started work on Fuselage.. 6mm Depron layers with Scrim tape in between.and a bamboo support 10mm 15mm x 750 mm (using Gorilla glue to stick this so it expands and fills any gaps)

Decided to call it ;
Deepak = D  and Allan  = A so DA ( Desert Aircraft  beware... :) lol...)

Aman,
It would be worth your while keeping MAKO links handy so you can build one once you have learnt to fly... Till then a GWS SLOW STICK, or PICO STICK or a  "Bixler" type of ready made foamy would be your best bet.

Attaching some images for you; ENJOY
Cheers
Deepak

Hi B4ggu

Nice tools and building material you got there. I also see a nice tape dispensing tool...any links for the same ? Will you use it to cover the entire plane or just did the hinges ?

BTW you can get it in all colours in India... A lot of fellow modellors have been using it. Google

I used regular colored tape in the build above. Rs 20 for a roll. You can get it at any good stationary shop. For puneites Venus traders or Bhori ali is the place.

Looking forward to your build :)

Hi Ankur,
The tape dispenser was bought it on Amazon.Yes it is quite a handy tool. I will see if I can find the link and email it to you.

Hi Ankur,

AMAZON link for the "3m heavy duty Tape dispenser" try Goggling you might find it elsewhere too;

I did not realise I started building this Depron plane I now call "D & A" short for Deepak and Allan in October last year....
I have finally completed it and now waiting for its maiden...
Estimated at 1.75Kg AUW has come out as 1.9Kg as I had to add some tail weight of 40 grams.
Electronics;  EMAX GT2826-06 KV710 Motor, Hobby King 60 amp ESC, 14x 7 e Prop by Emax, 14.8V 4Cell 25C 3700 Lipos and Tower Pro Carbon Geared 10gram servos.

Test; Pulling 25 to 26 amps with 14 x 7 so a 4 cell 3700 lipo should give me 8 to 10 minutes of flight time.
Landing gear from an old model "Morris the Knife".

Depron 3mm and 6mm with packaging tape as covering. Will add some decals and stickers if it flies well.
Here is what it has come out as;

Thanks Sanjay and Roman!

Flew it at the weekend and my god...... nearly lost the plane!

Learnt a lesson on C & G too!

We thought the C& G would the normal 1/3 of the wing and ailerons ie;405/3=  135mm from the leading edge. Decided to keep it at 125mm, had to add tail weight of 40 grams ....

We were so wrong.. The plane went vertical and kept looping.. Nearly lost it!

Some how inverted flying with just 1/4 throttle flew it near enough under control and it was possible to bring it back and just managed to flip it on the runway and landed..

Removed the weight at tail, had another flight at 115 mm C & G ; It was a bit better but then ran out of 4 cell Lipos. Still it was quite difficult to fly.. till Allan phoned me about this website on C & G;Aircraft Center of Gravity Calculator.

This showed us how far out we were...

It turned out our C & G  with a Wing Root Chord of 405mm and a Wing Span of 1400mm should be at 78mm (85mm for 3D flying) from the leading edge compared to the guess work of 115 we were trying to fly it.

http://adamone.rchomepage.com/cg_calc.htm (http://adamone.rchomepage.com/cg_calc.htm)

     "Enter the variables at left using the same units for all entries.
    For an aircraft to be stable in pitch, its CG must be forward of the
    Neutral Point NP by a safety factor called the Static Margin, which
    is a percentage of the MAC (Mean Aerodynamic Chord).
    Static Margin should be between 5% and 15% for a good stability.   Low Static Margin gives less static stability but greater elevator authority, whereas a higher Static Margin results in greater static stability but reduces elevator authority.Too much Static Margin makes the aircraft nose-heavy, which may result in elevator stall at take-off and/or landing.
    Whereas a low Static Margin makes the aircraft tail-heavy and susceptible to stall at low speed, e. g. during the landing approach.
    *Choose Low Stabiliser Efficiency if the tail is close to the wing's wake
    or behind a fat fuselage in disturbed flow."

Have ordered a few more Lipos from HK in UK hopefully they should arrive tomorrow and lets see what happens....

Very good low speed characteristics. And the birds were singing in the trees, with the sound....of the windmill going round  ;D

Thanks Sanj ..Yes it is lovely in the evenings when the wind finally settles down to approx 8 to 10MPH or less.

The  birds all come back to their nests as we have quite a few nesting trees around our flying site so listening and watching them is very soothing...

As its very cold, not many have started coming to the field as yet.... Hopefully by next month it will be busy...
