Title: diy micro flyer attempt number 2(400mm 40Mhz)
Post by: arun.sreelakam on February 21, 2013, 11:42:09 AM
Friends Soon after the first attempt of micro flyer, Rather than modifying the flyer decided to make another..
This time Choosing a 40Mhz Receiver and transmitter(got from an old 3.5ch heli)
But thing is that the receiver weighs about 10gms  :(
managed to get the total weight reduced to 39gms incl the 1s lipo.. :)
The wingspan is 400mm..
Here is the build pics..
Currently i am uploading this for the sweep(dont know whether it qualifies or not), But planning for another 28" slow 3d flyer befor the sweep.. :)

Now the fuse part is a HD thermocol and for the support a 2.5mm CF rof is sicked.. ;)
Motor mounted with icecream sticks and hot glue..  ;D

As the 3.5 channel heli has a tail motor i managed to get a channel for the rudder..
Added a small coil for the rudder and not can control the rudder with that channel.. :)
And the elevator is slightly facing upwards so that increasing the throttle will make it go up..
 pics of the Rudder part..

Now everything is ready and the bench test also The only problem(which is a secret actually) is that the rudder is turning by moving the lest control sticks to up down positions :giggle: :giggle: :giggle:
Trying to reverse it right now..  :'( :'(
here comes the Both Flyers.. :)
Follows the bench test video.. :)

zoom and show the actuator connection..... from where to get actuator?

there is nothing to show the connection just connect the 2 end of the coils to the tail motor pins in receiver.. change of polarity will make the actuator move both sides..
i had some coils lying around from an old radio.. bought the magnets and magnet holder from ebay.com 6-7 monts back..
i have 2 more here with coil installed.. :)

@kumardas sir not yet done maiden.. The thrust is enough.. No space for indoor flying.. will try outdoors but need very calm day.. waiting for the apt time.. :)

Wonderful.

Dear arun,

For actuator, Do you have any link to buy 1mmx1mm and 1mmx2mm magnets?

With connection i mean not the electric connection... i meant the way it is linked (control rod --if any).... you seem to explain so easily but i am not able to figure out HOW to make actuators.

@shivela I had seen some.. but they were very costly..  :(
This one I purchased some Rc stuffs which are auctioned in Ebay 5-6 months befor, He was from China i guess...
Was selling some broken actuators and servo's nothing was working.. and the lot includes 4 9gm servos whihc are working and brand new..
I won the bid for just $3 and shipped it for another 5$
I thought it was free shipping while bidding  :P
Anyway i got almost 3-4 actuator broken 2 of them had magnets and holders.. I think sundaram sir can guide you to get some.. :)

No control rods are there The rudder is connected directly to the Actuator magnets so no need of any control rods..

Making an actuator is not easy.. Or else you can try to make a coil with 45 Gauge copper wire(6mm or 7mm)
and buy some strong magnets.. But still the magnet holder is a head ache.. I will send you some close up pics of my actuator for your reference okay?

Arun,

I bought this magnets some time back and built my own actuators for an RC cootie built Which was working very well. I bought around 20 magnets about Rs10 each. I misplaced somewhere in my junk yard (My room...:-))

But i forgot the shop and street which is in boardway. people will know who difficult to find out if we forgot shop name in broadway.

Any help from chennai friends?....

Arun,
you are right. Will do that.

Sorry to divert the topic.
Actually i am good in making actuators. It is really easy. I just attached my way of making actuators..
May be helpful for you.

How can i keep the actuator in the center position always when it is not powered up..
The rudder freely moves when not connecting and which make the plane turns massively while launching..
:(

Use thin strips of the films like mobile scratch guard which you peel of before you apply to mobile for making hinge.  It has tension which will keep the rudder always straight till moved.

Or use a very small magnet of the size less than 1/6 the main magnet stuck out side the coil to center the hinge.

or you can use old x-ray film also as a hinges.. ;) ;D

X ray film may be too stiff for an acctuator operated hinge

I dont think yaar xray's are vert stiff than an actuator can move i think.. :( will make a try anyway..
Thanks for the suggetion dude..

@ sundaram: yea sir your right. X ray film may be too stiff for an acctuator but we can try for servos.  :headscratch:

you can use metal spring wire as hinge & zero position-er too. Noe the question is how you get thin spring wire ? Solution is unheated soldering iron coil wire opened and straightened. Now what coil? Use 40 watt. You can make hot wire too with his coil wire.

But remember, Open it before heating. If once heated, it will brake and you will have to through it away.

@kalyan da: thank you sir, why it will break when heaten up, so how can we use this as hot wire then?  ???
