Fly High

Hai friends saw a lot of micro flyers which built from scratch in this forum.. There was some parts of an rc heli lying around.. Decided to build one yesterday..
bought some styrofoam plates from near by store..
And also some icecream sticks
Started the build yesterday..
Its finished right now and wingspan of 400mm
weighs about 26gms including everything..
Twin motors with 3inch props(i think i need to change it to the micro quad props to get more thrust)
Now will upload some pics of the plane.. it is flying good but taking too much effort to turn..
Looking forward for your valuable suggetions.. Smiley  Smiley Smiley Smiley Smiley

Added a bit of styrofoam in the nose to balance the cg..
Which added about 1 gram more weight..
The thrust is okay but not good..
Will be using cf rod for fuse for the next attempt  Smiley Smiley

Dear Arun,
Wonderful built. You are my first inspiration.

I have two of my old helis sleeping in my desk.
Each one has two core-less motors and ESC/receiver(IR)/Lipo already available.
Plenty of styro plates of all size available in my wife's custody. I can steel it over night.

can you give some spec. like total length/tail size.

What is the shortest flying radius? I am dreaming to fly within my living room for a long time.

Perfect Landing

I guess it takes turns based on the motors speed difference and i guess thats how a co-axial works....The Infrared helis (co-axials) contains two motors inside it. The right throttle, moving left and right will increase/decrease the respective motor speed and so it takes turns. The same thing will also works in case of this micro as well...

correct me if i am wrong....

@Arun, you could have used small gear boxes instead directly attaching propeller to the motor, It may give more performance.

Arun you stole our idea Grin Grin

me and bilal had been thinking of building it since last few weeks. all we are lacking is few hours of ree time and a couple of 5x3 or 5x5 prop which will suit the heli motors we have..
Thumbs Up Thumbs Up for your build. We will learn from your mistakes  Grin.

One more think i would like to suggest:

Im sure you are gonna control it via differential speeds of motors.
If i would have been there, i would have tilted the motors to 2-5 degree downwards.
So, it will act as your elevator at differnt throttle. At your present setup, wings might be experincing too much lift at a decent throttle and your plane is gonna act like a tail heavy.

One more thing to add: get in touch with "sundaram" sir,.

@sundaram : Thanks sir, sir i have to ask you something that can i have an option to use a small actuator to this ir receiver..?
I cant find the rudder motor wires from the receiver as they are pulled out blindly.. Sad

At this stage it is simple left right motor control but it is difficult to control like that as the ir range is very less in sunlight... I have some actuators trying to mount a rudder atleast along with the motor control..
Thanks saurabh bhai... Smiley

@kumardasai: sir actually this motors can actually spin those props without any gear box..
If i am using gear reduction then i can use bigger props, but as they are controlled as you said by differing the speeds, mounting two big propellers in the front wont be that fine right? correct me if i am wrong..
Thanks for the suggetion sir..

And by mounting the motors a bit downwards will make it roll while turning as they are controlling by differing the motor speeds(correct me if i am wrong)
the elevator is working out good by incr/decr of throttle in this setup..
Any This is my first attempt and need to do many many many more improvements thanks again for a lot of suggestions... start building your's also even i can learn from that Giggle

Yes you can use actuators for elevator control in certain circuit boards of coax IR heli which have tail rotor motor and prop for pitch control and achieving forward and back control.

If you have a multimeter or an LED with 100 ohm resister You can make a probe to see the output of the contacts which are usually at the tip of the circuit, which gives output corresponding to the stick movement.

The Contacts for the tail rotor gives out nil output at center stick position and gives output at stick deflection and Polarity of the output changes corresponding to the deflection of stick for pitch control from positive to negative. The flow of current reverses.

Information sharing improves knowledge of both.

Before adding weight to nose, adjust battery and electronics board position for CG balancing so that every milligram can be saved.

Use dry wood as fuselage or even foam plate too.

Use mechanical elevator trim so that the full throttle can rise the nose and level flight can be achieved al lower than full throttle.

Sir actually i purposely added the foam in front not only to correct the cg but also to sace the fuce from crash.. now it crashed about 50 times while testing glide and also in throttle.. But no problem with the fuse till now.. The 1 gm of weight is doing his job very nicely.. Smiley

Sir currently I am controlling the elevator like that only by throttle inc/decr..
Did i missed something? like abhay suggested?(keep the motor 1-2 degrees low)

Check this out Arun bhai,
http://www.rcindia.org/electric-planes/scratch-build-living-room-flyer/msg107396/#msg107396

I build this last year, it flew really well....i too controlled the elevator with throttle and rudder with differential thrust, but since my heli didn't have an onboard gyro hence it flew kinda erratically.......balancing the differential thrust with the trim knob is really difficult,..........but the design was really forgiving and looked great, you can try it, gimme your email I'll mail you the plans

cheers

Hey Arun How About this one, use only one motor with gearbox, so that you can use bigger propeller and also the battery will give you more back up even and weight also will be reduced. Because adding two motors in parallel, need more precission, even one gram of weight difference in left wing side with right wing side, it will miss the balance. Correct me if i am wrong.

hey and one more thing.....Instead of using the actuator for the elevator, to reduce weight, you just use a slightly up fixed elevator, so that it will work based on the throttle speed. what do you say ? (just 5 to 10 degrees fixed elevator)

Yes that is a great idea thanks for that sir...
But i need to add an actuator for rudder as the turning radius is very big right now...  Sad
Couldn't found the rudder motor connections in the receiver till now...  Sad

yes, it depends on where you fly...if you are flying only indoor then you can also use the same technique for the rudder as well (slightly left or right fixed rudder), so that it will always fly in that direction only (either left or right). If it is out side then the actuator for rudder is mandatory i guess.

Can you just tell me what make/model is that heli ? because i too have some IR helis lying with me in home, but they are having tail motor attached to them. I can give some info if the make/model of your heli matches with my helis make/model.

Arun I am not sure wether you came across this post.

Dear TG,

I am posting photographs of the geared power system driving a 3030 GWS props, fabricated out of the recovered 6mm coreless motor along with pinion and gears from a gear damaged 8 gms servos.

I am also posting photographs of a gear and prop arrangement for a 4mm coreless which I am waiting for.

Video link of the attempted micro alula being tried is also posted under. Thanks for watching.

Hey Arun,

Check this one, they are little low in price and i guess they are made up of with thick plastic and little heavy in weight...check with RCBazaar and ask them to give the weight details if possible. Let's first compare the both props weight (carbon fibre and ZT Model prop) and then we can proceed further.

The thing is that My first micro flyer flies good, the difficult part is turning, going out of signal before it gets turned. If i placed the rudder a bit turned it can make circles.. Will upload the video, let me take one..
But in case of the second one the thrust is not enough i think it is because of the prop.. What i am using is the 6030 orange props.. Sad

Yes you are right...If you are using infrareds, then these infrareds are meant to work only in a closed room, they dont work outside. And about the orange prop, even they need more power to produce enough thrust and it will give you lot of problems interms of prop adapter. Better you go for the carbon fibre prop (uberlite one), these are really nicely designed props.
