This is my first built.

Electric power system:

AX 2306N 2000kv brushless Micro Motor (thrust 357gms)

AX 2308N 1100kv brushless Micro Motor

2 6gms servos

Wing made out of thermocol and still incomplete.
Wingspan 38", Chord 8"
Wooden spar at 1/3rd from LE

Boom out of mirandi woodstick (weight 40gms, length 32")
elevator and rudder out of 4mm Coro

Total AUW is 300gms.

I am looking forward for your help fixing it.

cover that wing with newspaper soaked in 50/50% solution of fevicol and water or with fine cotton cloth 'dhoti' and you are good to go

thnks bilal and swizera...is the elevator width sufficient for this. It is 10" X 6"? Rudder is 6" high.

Bilal how much more weight the 50% diluted Fevicol and newspaper treatment will add? Right now the wing is weighing 40gms.

And what should be the opt size of propeller for this?

apply face tissues over wings.. with 25% fevicol SH, and 75 % water.. nothing will add as weight after drying.. two layer is far enough.. do not dry it under direct sunlight.. warps.. and its a nice effort..

Roopesh sir, does it provides equivalent stiffness? It may help me a lot 
 I have been covering mine with newspapers, but they add a lots of weight 

Abhay, when we use news paper, it will be much heavy.. but with tissue, nothing will add extra when dried.. here is two examples of my wings from thermocol.. one is 50 inch span and proved well in flight.. stiff.. light.. and withstands lots of crash impacts.. easy to repair..

Roopesh sir, what is that pink color covering.? Have you covered it with something or it is just paint?

amit, seems you have cut the wing using hot wire cutter.. sand it thoroughly before covering.

Modellers.. to make a thermocol wing, you do not need any hot wire cutter.. instead, make a template, of the wing, and draw it on a piece of thick card board, or paper, and cut it uot all inside with a sharp knife.. then you can keep this as a template.. then take two sheets of thermocol, that thicker than that you need, and make a groove on one side of the sheet, exactly at the area of the cg point of the wing.. then place and glue one thin strip of balsa, or carbon rod, and apply glue on both surface of the thermocol sheets.. then place it togather and add some weight all over the laminated sheets..

wait untill dry..then draw a bottom line after taking a measurement with steel scale.. this must be equal on both tips of the wings.. then draw a second line from front to back.. this also must be precise.. then place the template at the line beginnings.. draw a clean single line with a sketch pen.. then satart to sand.. use 60 or 80 grit sanding belt, while the belt must be on a flat strong piece of ply wood.. make sure that the sanding is logarithmatic..  no hurry.. and will be a mess with lots of flying grains.. clean as you sands.. then after a little sanding, insert the template through one side, and make sure the shape.. contunue to other end.. after the basic shaping, use 400 grit emery paper to smooth once again..

after the smoothing, clean all flying particles and wipe the wing with a cloth.. blow air if possible with vaccum cleaner, in reverse.. cut the wing half at centre, and make an angle with sand paper.. use fast two or five minute epoxy, to rejoin the wing.. this gives you a diehedral angle.. after drying, start to apply the tissue.. how to apply..? its all easy.. place the tissue, over the wing, and dip the brush in diluted glue.. remember.. 25% glue and 75 % water.. if not will be tough to apply as tissue tears off.. then allow all dripping glue bak in to the pot, from brush.. stroke the brush in to one direction over the tissue, and follow to the end.. do not restroke.. the tissue will be a mess.. apply the second one.. along.. and wait for dry.. under fan... when dry, continue the application, while leaving a convenient place to hold the wing all the while.. do not repeat the application in same place again.. instead apply in a continues manner.. after drying an area, can follow then.. after drying can see an unbelievably stiff light wing in hand..

the colour of the wing is not painted.. but it is the natural colour of the tissue.. can buy in lots of colour.. pink.. red.. yellow.. blue.. white.. green.. choice..

            

All my asked and unasked queries are sorted.

and please never under estimate the streangth of the structure completed by the tissue and thermocol.. its too stiff and strong, while light in weight.. means very light.. here are two examples.. of my works..

will add a video log to make a wing from thermocol.. hope it may help you all lots to make a simple plane in an inexpensive way.. but need a little time, as i am tied up in a model aircraft project..

Sure.. i have some commited works.. will add it as early as possible.. 

It looks like it will fly and it will get into the air.  That's really never the issue anyway.  The main issue is always if it will "land" properly

I have a micro scale to weight it if you would like to know the all up weight (AUW) w/ battery before the maiden. 

what size is that prop?

I measured the AUW its around 300 gms. with battery its 10X6 prop.

I have 8X4 props too.

10 X 6 is a good start with a 2 cell.  If it's not enough thrust, go to the 8 X 4 with a 3S.  That motor is 1100 kv that was on the Tiger Moth.

I have 4 2S batteries (610mah, 500mah, 800mah) all ready to be tried with this. will charge all these before Sunday. Yes that is the same motor and servo and ESC are also from that Tiger Moth.

For all new pilots, don't be afraid of crashing.  Try not to crash of course but don't let the fear of crashing grip you.  Every new pilot crashes and without mistakes you can't learn.

Yesterday I applied the 25% diluted Fevicol SH with Tissue Paper treatment over my thermocol wing, and oh...boy...what amazing results...For 38" wingspan and 8" chord, it added only 40gms as extra weight and the wing has became like rock.

Also cut the wing in half, added an angle in middle by sanding thermocol than used 2 minutes araldite epoxy to join again. Got a nice 2" diethral on both side wings.

This is best wing construction method I got till now, specially for beginners and where weight and cost is a concern. For rs. 30 we can make wing up to 76" wingspan and up to 12" chord. And the maximum weight of wing for 76" wingspan and 12" chord will not be more than 200gms.

My wing was 38" wingspan and 8" chord and its weight is 80gms.

Below are steps I took, if any thing is missing or wrong, Roopesh sir please correct it:

1. Made 25% diluted Fevicol SH solution. For 38" wing span and 8" Chord, take about 10 tablespoon of Fevicol SH and add 30 tablespoon of water. Mix it thoroughly. While applying this solution also keep it mixing as the heavy Fevicol keeps on depositing in the bottom.

2. Took Tissue Paper and lay it flat on wing, took a 2" brush and apply in one direction only. Its important that you apply it in one direction. Do not apply on the whole length at once, apply in batches of 2" chord then again move forward and apply on next 2" chord.

3. Insert 2 wire skewers and attach on both sides of the wing to hold it while applying glue.

4. After first covering of entire wing is complete, let it dry under fan, it will dry in 15 minutes.

5. Then add 2nd layers of Tissue Papers covering the entire area. Dry again under fan.

You will be amazed with the results.

Amit.. you are sure.. its simple but gives us amazing results.. and once you got the idea, theres no any restrictions.. can make anything to anything, from a hand launch glider to 6 meter long ship.. will last for a life time.. can repair easily.. can paint it easily.. reshape.. anything.. and happy to know my simple idea came utility for you all.. will add a nice video of construction.. have nice flights.. 

Ready for maiden flight today.

We tried to fly it today. Lance did the maiden flight.

It took off for just 3-4 feet and just landed. There are few modification suggested by Lance:

1. Increase the elevator control surface as it is not sufficient for taking off. (It was mistake on my part, I changed the original plan and reduced the control surfaces to reduce weight because of ignorance, will stick to the original plan now)

2. Change landing gear, its very soft and bends easily even while taxing.

Also planning to add 5" wing part on both sites with an angle so give this wing a polyhedral shape.

Using 2S 610MAH battery and hobbyking AXN 1100kv motor. Total AUW is 383gms. Guys need help what other issues may be with this trainer spad stick?

Amit, increase the angle of attack, of main wing a little.. and as you mentioned, increase, the throw..

Wingspan - 40 inch
Cord - 8 inch
Fuse - 30 inch
Motor - CF2822
Prop - 9x6
Battery - 3 cell 2200mah
ESC - 30 A

Wing made from Thermacol covered with cloth and i have reinforced the wing by adding balsa spar and balsa leading edge, total weight of the model including the electonics is 630 grams.
Fuse made of 15x15 mm stick and the tail is from a crashed Piper Cub.

I have used Turnigy 3 cell 2200mah and i have used normal wood stick, i think it is called bidding wood.
 

It is a heavy Battery, what is plane Total Weight ?

Following these steps:

1. increase the "angle of attack" of main wing
2. increase the "throw"
3. wrap the RX and battery with thin foam

"angle of attack" and "throw" are not very familiar words to me, searching and reading more about these and will change as suggested.

RC Sir, your trainer stick is very similar. Difference being battery as I want to stick to 2S for sometime as I've bought 4 of them, just want to use them.

Another difference your Wingspan and elevator width ratio is about 1:4, in my plane it is looking like 1:8

Your landing gear is made from cycle spoke? I had issues with my landing gear yesterday, they just fall flat and one prop broke because of that. Will use cycle spoke now for landing gear.

I can sand the rear part of wing base to increase angle of attack.

I have put control horn 1" behind the LE of elevator surface, can I increase the throw by moving it near to LE? What should be the optimal placement of control horns?

 

Amit.. hope you got the facts about angle of attack.. and please fix the control horn exactly at the point of pivoting.. if not throw at one side will be higher and one side very less.. and stress will increas at one side.. it is easy to increase the throw of the control surface either by increasing the length of the servo arm, and by decreasing the control horn attached to the surface.. a radio with DR (Dual Rate) function will help lots.. a radio with ATV (Arm Travel) also helps.. you can insert the control rod, from servo, to the possible innermost hole on the control horn on the control surface.. this increases the throw.. and, another easy method is increasing the size of control surface.. but..yes.. weight also increases..

Hi Guys,

Yesterday we tried to fly it again after doing the modifications.

I have increased the Wingspan by 10", added 5" wing on both sides to give it a polyhedral shape.

Increased the control surfaces, increased the throw, increased the angle of attack. Using 2S 610MAH battery with 10 X 6 prop and AX 2308N 1100kv brushless Micro Motor http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbycity/store/uh_viewitem.asp?idproduct=5429, CG was correct, controls were very sensitive, just a slight touch of the stick was sufficient.

It was under powered, I checked the motor thrust data from this page:

What should be the max thrust of this motor for 2S and 10 X 6 prop according to this link?

I am attaching the flight video as well, please let me know your opinion on its flight....and  subsequent crash..It was very windy also yesterday.

Experts / Seniors..... what should be my next course of action:

Change the motor / Reduce weight (looking difficult to me) / Any other changes....

Amit, every thing looks good on your plane except power.
You need 80 -100 W power to fly it comfortably.
 2cell, 600mah may be too weak to sustain that much current.

Best may be change to 3cell say 1300mAh and 10X6 prop. motor can be the same.

We were about to try with 3S yesterday but because of high winds and broken landing gear, could not try.

I have 3S 1800mah and 2200mah Turnigy batteries only, 1800mah is 150gms and 2200mah is 173gms. Will this motor be able to pull the heavy batteries.

it should be ok with 1800mah.

Wow, Amit, your plane looks so much like my first build! Good job! 

In my later builds, I used a 240W motor with a 3s 1200 mAh LiPo. Truly powerful and light setup. Also completely removing the landing wheels and replacing with a depron/ HD thermocol belly also helps reduce a lot of weight! 

And after my first few builds I completely shifted to coroplast. It's a great material to work with and is low cost and crash proof!

My good old days are over...Wifey and children are back from their summer vacation  , so finding it hard taking out enough time for building. This plane flew but it was under powered.

Could not follow Ashta Sir's advice as the ESC and battery connectors were all for 2S and I dont have XT60 connector and thicker silicon wire.

I am making some modifications on my build using same wing, more powerful power setup (A2212/13 1000KV motor, 30AMP ESC) and 3S 1800/2200mah battery. Trying for pusher plan. Please have a look at the pics.

Thanks, Swapnil .... so far so good... enjoying every minute spent on RC hobby. Coro is good, I ordered Flying Buggle so that would be my first experience with Coro. I also got a GWS Slow Stick from Lance so will be flying Slow Stick on Sundays with Lance.

This weeks flying was also interrupted by high winds, Slow Stick flown well but Lance crashed one of his plane, propeller broke and another one landed on a tree with elevator broken, too windy like dust storms. He went up to the upper branches of the tree to get the plane back.
